Personally I want to watch Sony crush the 360 underfoot, I can't fully support MS after it's shady tactics, customer service, tech support have shown a greedy company willing to slap the consumer in the face with a faulty product and only taking action when backlash grew too large.JynxzorShady tactics? The customer service isn't bad. Microsoft extended their warranty to 3 years for free for a common problem, I can't think of ever getting a 3 year warranty for free for anything, the most I've ever gotten free was 90 days. I have no issue at all with the way they treat their customers. They have piss-poor console construction and thats where my major beef with them is.
I will be super pissed if this is what they do. Not just because it's a let down, but because it's such a dumb idea. No one who owns a Wii / DS is suddenly going to go ga-ga over playing watered-down minigame versions of 360 titles. That wasn't the key to the Wii / DS successs, and that MS thinks it was shows they have no chance of duplicating it.
Really, why would you not play to your strengths?

Beats me. Whats even more stupid to me is that they actually pushed for the "Wii60" combo, Wii being the casual/party system and providing a different method of play while the 360 would service all your traditional gaming needs. I know that Wii+360 != PS3 anymore, but it seems like they are contradicting the concept they once had. I dunno what gives, I guess they want strengths in all areas rather than just a few.

"We are now tuned to MSs press confrense where they will announce something big"...*drumroll*
MS=We will now sell a Blu-ray add on and discontinue the HDDVD add on. oh Gold members will now get 1 month free(only if you bought the 360 launch date). Thank you goodnight."
MS at GDC in a nutshell.
To the people who said Microsoft is money hungry, I assume you haven't heard of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.
When Microsoft starts selling demos, then you can call them greedy and pretend that no other company is. (cause you know..apparently MS is the only company that wants money while every other company is in it for the customer)
$40 demo? GTFOH. Whats next, making people pay to start their PS3?
Tomorrow isn't MS's only chance, they have E3 also.deangallop
By then it will be too late... Home, Metal Gear Solid IV, MLB 08, HD- DVD is completly washed over. God of War 3 and FFXIII at E3 2008= instant win for Sony.

'2007- Bad year for Sony and a great year for 360.= Playstation 3 outsells 360 WW.'
Not necessarily, but you could assume as much. It just depends on your outlook.

Riddle me this, How long did it take MS to even ADMIT that there was a problem with there system. MS released a defective consol and the knew about it, you can't deny this I find that shady tactics. Denying that the RROD was a issue is also poor customer service and not warning customers about it is more than poor as well. 3 Year waranty covers only one of many problems and they did it because they had to, if MS did not give out that extension, Class actions suits would be abound and the QQ may have even issued a recall.

Why? Why should we have to put up with MS? because it releases good games? Because it's the American system? Please tell me why it's sad to wish MS gets a taste of it's own medicine and get a slap in the face from the other side? They did plenty of there own flaunting of there system.
The The platform itself is solid, it's construction and MS are to blame for all the problems anyone has with the system. I do not wish for there to be no competition, for it breeds inovation, but MS tried to force a defective product down our throat and in a sense it suceeded reaping the profits for themselves. MS just needs a swift kick in the rear for doing such things.
SO get some popcorn and enjoy the show....
On one side we got the sleeping giant thats starting to wake up(The PS3)
On the other side we got a sputtering giant in need of some much needed momentum.
If 24=judgement day for the 360 then i hope its worth watching.jg4xchamp
Would that make the Wii a small, cuddly giant that's also on steroids and acid?
Quite frankly, at this point, ill be more dissapointed in Sony if they dont come up with something to trump microsoft. Sony have a lot of aces they can pull at this point, and if i were them, i would probably bring a few out to garner some attention.nicenator
Hopefully someone has the sense to step up to the plate.

had the PS3 launched sooner & thus without BluRay I think they might have passed the X360 by now. but HD-DVD could well have won the disk format war- since you cant understate the significance of the PS3 aiding the victory of BluRay. Sony took a decision to win the format war which probably slowed the pace of its inevitable success in the console war.

I hope so. If Microsoft does that, it puts them in the position of being market-leader. They control the shots, they force Sony to respond. What they can then do is walk Sony into Microsoft's territory, and make Sony compete in an arena where Microsoft has the competitive advantage.
What Microsoft has been doing lately is walking into an arena they can't compete in - digital entertainment. If they keep insisting on going "cell phone gaming" and "media focused" they're going to get eaten alive by Apple, Sony, Google, etc. It's not that MS can't compete in media - it's that they have to fight many other companies.
They need to focus in on their core strengths - online gaming, and games library - while remaining cost competitive. It sounds common sense, but I feel like they're facing the same problems Sony was in 2006, where an over-zealous turn towards "overall entertainment" instead of "videogame entertainment" cost them marketshare.
[QUOTE="CheeChee_Macko"]Either way, we the consumers win.Kritical_Strike
You sir, win this thread. Fanboys begone.
Not really true.
In a war of attrition, the consumer will lose. What Sony and Microsoft would do is price cut as late as possible, spend as little as possible pushing the envelope, and focus on steady growth. The "win" would be a neck-and-neck finish around 40 ~ 50 million units sold.
A war of glory benefits the consumer, because Microsoft and Sony become willing to sacrifice short-term profit for long term market-share - they fight for a clear winner, and a clear loser. But that takes bravado, it takes risk, it takes vision, determination, and moxi.
online gaming & games library HAS been the strengths of the X360- but has that held off the PS3? no. the ps2 installbase started switching over to PS3 in big numbers following the pricecut. methinks the poor ps3 sales prior to that was down to just the hardcore playstation fans buying it- the major userbase were indifferent to the high price. if the PS3 was anything but Playstation it would be dead. if the X360 was Sony's playstation 3 it would have won already.CwlHeddwyn
Which means if Microsoft doesn't act, they've already lost.
Sony has cut $200 off the price since launch, Microsoft only $50. Microsoft's cutting at a rate of $25/yr, Sony at a rate of $200/yr. So, if Sony remains steady, in a strange twist of events, the more complex system will be being sold for *less money* that the Xbox 360, or at least the same price.
I'm not saying Blu-Ray is inheriently relevant to gaming, but if I were a general consumer buying a new system to play GTA IV, a blu-ray player, known to be more reliable than the 360, with free online... and now if they could add "cheaper than the 360" to the mix... well it's hard not to see how that would really threaten Microsoft.
-
Another thing Microsoft has to worry about, that they might not realize, is the flight of the hardcore gamer. Hardcore gamers are more wiling to buy new hardware than anyone else on the market. Look at PC gamers, and how profitable nVidia and Intel are, for example. The 360 audience isn't magically fixed - if Sony starts getting cheap, gets the games, gets HOME, gets all of these things lined up - there's really nothing stopping people who have a 360 right now from picking up a PS3 and gaming with their friends on that system.
There's a very real risk that 360 "core" gamers become 360 / PS3 gamers - at which point Microsoft has to offer the better set of services than Sony. If they don't, people might start picking up their core multiplats (madden, gta, cod, etc) on the PS3, instead of the 360.
-
What I mean is this:
People like you and I, in System Wars, are gamers first. Even if we defend a particular system, we ultimately are probably the most likely group to also go and buy multiple systems, simply because a game or feature is released that we like, or even simply just to own them all.
We're also the primary audience Microsoft has right now. As they try and go casual, if they forget to keep creating new features for their core audience, then Sony can come in and really offer something to make you want to get your multiplats on the PS3. You might pick up a PS3 for MGS4, for example, but suddenly decide you really like HOME, and want to play with CoD5 with your friends on PSN.
Impossible? No I don't think so, in fact, I think it's more likely than you'd suspect at first glance.
The "core gamer" buying their multiplats like Madden on the 360 accounts for a big portion of Microsoft's income. They cannot underestimate the importance of maintaining this trend.
*sigh* No one seems to understand that it's all about the software. MS could sell half the hardware sony does, but double the software and make more money (win.)
You fanboys should be wathing the games, not so much the systems.
farrell2k
If Sony gets a bigger install base than Microsoft, the software sales will follow. If you've read my comment in this thread (at all) most of them relate to software sales, and how Microsoft's currently solid software sales are not guaranteed to continue in the future.

I guess you've forgotten what Sony didn't do with the DRE... did they even admit it existed or offer to repair/replace faulty units? No, thought not, at least not until they were sued! At least MS has had the balls to put their money where their mouth is - that, to me, is good customer service, even though the product was faulty. Luckily my PS2 never got the DRE (I bought it in the March after it launched) so I never even realised the issue happened. So before you start throwing stones, check that you're not in a glass house.
I hope MS announce some titles but GDC is not the place. I'm expecting something entirely new from MS during E3. Hopefully, they don't repeat the same mistake they did before in 2007.
halo 3 was already announced a long time ago... :PRage010101
Halo 2HD, er... Halo 2.5? :P
I wonder if they will announce anything that will make me use my 360 again.
I seriously doubt it.
MABYE THEY WILL FIX LIVE IN OCEANIA?! Wait... Whats that Bill? Another big f*** off?
Sony had to cut their price. It was not a decision they wanted to make, it was a decision they had to make. No console in history has cut their price that much in the first year of launching.
It was a desparation move that saved the PS3. Without it we would be talking about the demise of Sony.

I agree - but get where I'm going with this.
Tonight is the night. I'm excited - Microsoft really has a chance to make this war take off for us. Now, if they focus on the "casual cell phone gaming" thing, tonight is a dud, and suddenly we're back to boring-old "war of attrition". But, for one night, for one chance, maybe, just maybe, Microsoft will fire on all cylinders an make tracking this war worthwhile. We can hope, right?
TC, they are going 3rd place no matter what, the important thing is to keep up what they are doing, delivering great games and expanding the online gameplay and most importantly, they should make the online for free.
As for lemmings who are blind, Blu-Ray is needed, everybody was saying that except lemmings.
So, when something great the competition has, praise it and demand getting it, dont blindly hate it, my words goes also to HOME, so to all the lemmings out there who were making jokes and saying HOME is useless, you have to keep your words when MS releases something similar to HOME, DON"T USE IT, IT IS USELESS.

I am guessing you aren't a lawyer judging from your weak arguments.
Blu-ray is not needed for a game console to succeed worldwide, go to Google and type in: Wii
HOME even if Microsoft comes out with a direct copy called HEARTH is in fact useless for many people who want to play the games they buy online against or with strangers and friends

Im no expert of sales, but Im sure BD will boost PS3 sales alot and maybe it will outsell the Wii next month in NA.
Blu-Ray is needed either you like it or not, the whole world just agreed, don't tell me about filling data crap, if any 360 game was in a BD disk, it would been better high quality in every aspect, look at PS3 exclusives, they are all of higher quality of 360 games, GT5, MGS4, HS, Uncharted, R&C, KZ2...etc.
HOME is not useless for who wants to play games, it is a big service for gamers, search for info on HOME.
