Epic games created one of (if not, THE) most used game engines of all time (correct me if im wrong) the Unreal engine. LOTS of devs use this engine to create great games. Unreal is a widely used, and amazing game engine that keeps evolviong.

They've also made a multiplayer experience like no other, with its super fast paced, fps action, Unreal Tournament.It got alot of people into playingmainly multiplayer FPS.

Now, a new series they've created is getting rave reviews, and has sold millions on the Xbox 360, and soon will on the PC, Gears of War, this game uses an amazing cover system, along with amazing graphical, and physical effects. Amazing multiplayer.

Valve, also has made some amazing feats in gaming, Counter strike. argueably the most well known FPS, it had a basic FPS ****that people loved, kill the other team. Along with user created maps, mods, and whatever else you can think of, the possibilities were endless. this is the FPS.

not to mention Valve creating one of the best singleplayer FPS experiences of all time, theHalf-Life series. I love this series, the singleplayer is amazing, the weapons are VERY cool, the story rocks, gameplay is almost perfect, and the mods, maps, and weapons people created only sweeten the deal.
AND the Source engine is very widely used
