I'll take USB sticks delivered to me by pigeons over Digital Distribution. I'd rather have the cool box too. Not that Digital Distribution is a bad thing. Steam lets you pre-load games before release and unlocks them on launch day.

When has that ever stopped industry before? I doubt they care about the enviroment, the cost of producing those materials however...

Can't wait to see the mass layoffs when the shutdown production facilities.

Is not significant enough of a reason to be a primary or even secondary cause for the death of the physical medium. Only thing that matters would be cost and number of consumers reached. Everyone would agree that costs could go down as DD becomes more popular but the trade off, or potential trade off, is that fewer people are reached. No company in their right mind is going to just abandon the millions of consumers that are not downloading/streaming/e.t.c.

We can declare the death of disc based games sometime after the last CD and DVD is sold in stores. Till then, no. DD hasn't even managed to kill music which can literally be downloaded in seconds on even a serviceable connection. Games, by contrast, are far larger (only the best connections can even get a minor game down in sub an hour) and getting steadily bigger. Meanwhile the internet pipes are growing in penetration, but not really in available bandwidth (in fact, many are getting caps that they didn't previously have). So, yeah, no.

"Video games on a disk. Be prepared for a flashing "Game Over" to come to the land of video game disks and the used-game market in the next few years. Not within at least 10 years if by then.

What? I'm betting the next gen of consoles won't even have a disc drive... Games on Demand is growing quickly, and I can't wait to see Gamestop go bankrupt

Riku, I believe you will have the last laugh one day as for consoles biting the dust in the wake of something like Onlive, but that day is very, very far off. There will definitely be a generation after this one and likely one after that....so maybe in a decade or more you will be correct.

I just think you're jumping the gun a little early. Of course for every new big thing, or major transition there are the early hyper enthusiastic supporters and you are definitely one of them in this case. Maybe just slow down a little cause you wont be making converts soon.

Now if you think something like this will be replacing PCs, pr PC gaming then you better not hold your breath.

Yeah, not many at all. But the few that are still there, (must be like a couple hundred) must be really into their hobby because they spend more money and their dying breed of a hobby then all consoles do combined...

And how long until technology evolves to only laptop and "smart phones/iCrap" format with upgradability, speed, and reliability with no heat issues? It'll be a very freaking long time until stuff like that happens. I'm willing to bet never but I don't know how long or how far we will advance before we end up blowing up the Earth.

Explain.

I understand that mobile devices are picking up rapidly, but in what way do these many industries using desktops need to "adapt to survive in the market", buddy? For what reason will all of a sudden these stationary desktops have to grow legs in order to survive?

I hope you arnt talking about buying games... PC g**ks don't buy games. Let's face it, most ppl only play one PC game, WOW. And I'm betting most are gaming in laptops because you don't need a rig to run itBodyElite

So why exactly is Steam reporting 200% increase in sales? Plus, it's funny that you're resorting to childish insults.

What a "trash" list. 1) For those who don't have brand new cars, there will still be a GPS market for them. 3) Debatable. DVD players are more likely to die out first than Blu-Ray because there are still a lot of people who like having movies on disk to not rely on an internet connection to watch movies/TV shows (such as myself and my family) 5) Still use my netbook, because current tablets are still far away from being able to replace laptops and netbooks in their functionality. 6) A lot of us still prefer disks for video games because not everyone has a blazing fast internet connection that will be able to download games faster than a disk can install them. 9) Mainstream desktop market might decrease but it won't disappear or become "trash" desktops will be utilized by PC gamers. 10) What happens if I don't have internet at the time when I need to transfer some small files? USB thumb drive to the rescue :)

Even when you buy a PC game at the store your basically only buying a keycode. There rally is no reason to include discs anymore. And consoles always follow suit after PC. I believe its coming faster than people think.

He was talking about LCD with LED backlight which is not OLED. And as it stands right now there isn't a single OLED TV that can beat the best plasma in things like primary/secondary colours and colour accuracy. The OLED strong points are black levels but that does it no good when the green looks neon.

I don't think there are AMLOED screens that are larger than 5 inches. And (PM)OLED isn't as good.

Color accuracy is something that can be fixed with some adjustments and refinements.

The contrast and black levels are second to none, though. When the entire screen is black, you can't even tell it's on (because the pixels are actually turned off).

The difference:

  • (PM)OLED: Lights up pixels according to row by column
  • AMOLED: Lights up pixels individually (allows for much, much better contrast)

You must really young then.

I still sometimes buy a CD.

Kids these days......I remember listening to cassette tapes on break and a teen asked me what was the thing I was holding in my hand......she didn't know what a cassette player was. Heck some kids these days don't know what a CD player is.

But many people still listen to CDs and record players are coming back into style.

Primary/Secondary colour along with colour accuracy are things that haven't been addressed yet and basic calibration will not get you that close to perfect colour accuracy on the best plasmas. And the difference between OLED and AMOLED have no effect on those. The only OLED TV on the market is the Sony XEL-1 and AMOLEDs are in loads of new phones. The technology is still young and will improve a fair bit more in the next 5 years, but as it stands now there is still a need for improvement. Then again we haven't seen the end of plasma either so its still fair game. Personally I think in the longrun OLED will take the crown.

I'm loving the Super AMOLED on my Samsung Captivate. Looks better than any other screen on a phone and has the highest contrast ratio ever seen on a phone. Can't wait to see the first 40" SAMOLED.

Right now a game is about 7.5-8 GB (to put this into perspective a DVD (like the one the Xbox 360 uses) can hold 9.5 GB and 1 GB of that is taken up with security information. Now, if you want to download that much on dial up just stop gaming all together. It will be less painful that way. On a high speed connection that's still a LOT of bandwidth. That will likely take you several hours on most connections. From the distribution stand point it IS less expensive than disk manufacturing (once you take into acount for packaging, storage, shiping etc. brick and morter stores are a very expensive distribution model). However, from a consumer stand point this can be a bad idea. Let's say a consumer has a cap on his/her bandwidth (most do) and that bandwidth cap is only 50 GB (not uncomon) this means that you've eaten up 16% of your bandwidth on a single game assuming it's only 8GB (and it'll probably be more since that 8GB cap on size is going to go away).

The other big problem? Gamestop. When you try to make the transition they will give less support (after all, guess who turns into a dinosour when digital download goes big?) to your products which make most of their sales in brick and morter stores. There's a reason why they don't even offer the latest and best games on PSN and XBL at all. This happens to be it.

I agree, but once again, I believe this won't come until 10-20 years. For consoles anyway.

I prefer retail over dd. My internet is absolute trash so downloading games is not an option.

Yeah, my dad said soon games and music will be on Memory Sticks and he gave the example of my Nintendo DS. I know downloads will be the future, a lot of people still don't have an internet connection. Records -> Tapes -> CDs -> Memory Stick?

Even when you buy a PC game at the store your basically only buying a keycode. There rally is no reason to include discs anymore. And consoles always follow suit after PC. I believe its coming faster than people think.

DaBrainz

If consoles were truly following after PC's every move, console games would already be standard with keycodes.

The only people that can even compete with me buying discs is Steam, and even still thats like once or twice a month. The sales are either really good, or for a **** game no one wanted in the first place.
