I'd say true. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule but the average WRPG (like Two Worlds) can be decent, but an average JRPG (like Blue Dragon) can be absolutely mind-numbing. However on that note a great JRPG can be as good or better than a great WRPG.

You won't get an agreement on this topic. It's a matter of personal opinion.

Personally, I like both, but probably JRPGs more since rpg games hook me with character progression and JRPGs do this aspect better. The stories in RPGs always suck compared to almost any book, and the gameplay itself isn't usually as rich as say Devil May Cry would be. I just need those ultimate weapons, secret characters and super spells, along with some good old fashioned over-the-top effects.

I know! lol.

But lately, I'd have to agree. WRPGs>>>JRPGs. The stories seem to be better.

IMO.

WRPGs are more like table top D&D style

where as JRPGs you meerly controle the chars. along the story, more like an interactive movie

For the majority, false.

For a few choice examples like Mass Effect, true.

I find JRPGs to be far more consistent in quality than WRPGs.

All opinion. Some people like the struture of JRPGs and the depth provided with the structure. Some people like the more open ended apporach to WRPGs and the depth prodvided in that.

Heavily opinion based. Both have their fair share of horrible titles and great titles. They both fit into the "Role-Playing" profile of the genre quite admirably, even though there are contrasting differences between them. Different Formulas, Same Role-Playing aspect.

Its really funny you pick good RPGS and some bad rpgs on the WRPG...

Try Baldur's Gate series, Planescape Torment, KOTOR etc etc..

And I think niether are better or worse.. Some of my favorite games are in both genres...

Mhm, these days i would say that Western RPG's like ESIV: Oblivion are superior to the tired, old and boring JRPG's that have saturated the RPG market over the years. Hell even Final Fantasy has lost it's steam, the last decent one was 10 (conspicuously the last FF made by Squaresoft.....)

FF alone can take on the whole WRPG library sales wise. Not to mention other great games like, Star Ocean, Kingdom Hearts, Radiata Stories, Atelier Iris, Disgaea, Suikoden and so on and so on.

Crackdown is not a WRPG. :| And on a side note neither is better then the other, it's just each person's opinion on which they like more. As for me, no I disagree as I like them both.

I disagree, many games have beaten FF7 before it came out and after. FF7 only cracked open the Jrpg market for the USA. I never thought it was the best rpg ever, FF6 has always been a much better game imo.

Depends on opinion. In my mind, WRPG is synonymous with CRPG, and JRPG with console RPG.

As a player of both I can honestly say it is opinionated.

That said they are both good in the lenghts of story, gameplay, and value, it totally depends what in your opinion determines those three things.

Saying that WRPGs are better is like saying milk chocolate is better than dark chocolate. Its not true. It seems all the lemmings are using ME as their new excuse. One game. When there is a kajillion (may be exaggerating) great games cough *fire emblem, tales of...,golden sun, FF, disgaea, Dragon Quest, etc...*uncough, that are JRPGs.

Milk Chocolate > Dark Chocolate.

and there are tons of classic WRPG franchises ... jsut because they dont milk it as much as the japanese milk everything in existance, doesnt mean they are not as popular or not as good.

Ultima? as in 1980s? do you blame them? it was much harder to make things unique back then based on technology , can you name any recent milked WRPGs? because I dont see more than 2-3 games of each.

The majority of the time I like JRPGs a lot more. However, there are some EXCELLENT games in both genres.

WRPG - Diablo, Elder Scrolls, Baldurs Gate

JRPG - Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Chrono series

PS: what would Dark Cloud be considered as? It's made by sony.

But you're blaming JRPGs for game such as Final Fantasy wish have been around since the 80's too, don't be a hypocrite. Most good RPGs are sequels of very old franchises.
