^Could it be something like that, but also includes gaming? :o

"Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot predicted today not just a coming generation of consoles and a gaming revolution in set-top boxes, but a bigger gaming play by Apple than just the iPhone."

"There's also a new entrant in the business," he said, after riffing off the looming gaming potential of set-top boxes. "[That entrant is] Apple, with the iPhone. And we don't think they will stop there."

"We will see more customers coming to the video game industry .. they will start also to come under the boxes you see under the TV because those TV boxes will be more powerful.. We will see more consoles on which we will be able to put products. As for the next generation of consoles we can't give you a date but from what we see there is a lot of energy to improve the consoles [that are out now.] We are already working on some of the elements that will appeal in the next generation."

"You saw new interfaces with the Wiimote and also with the DS with the stylus," Guillemot said. "What we see for the future is they will also be big announcement in interfaces. It will not only happen in consoles but also happen on those TV boxes as well."

And right after that, Guillemot made his remark about Apple.

He must know something we don't, right? Call me crazy, but I think Apple could make this a 1 console future...

So it'll just be a really expensive device that can't do anything. Looking forward to it. Course I'll be getting one just because it'll look nice.

Assuming that Apple follows their usual habits the end result will be a device with little to no 3rd party support that will cost more than a launch PS3 but be no better than the competition. This is the same company that made the Air... a 15 inch laptop with no dvd drive like a 60gb HDD but sells for like $1700. It's also the same company that cranks out a new version of the hardware like every year. And it's not the usual console thing of a new sku thats just a bundle or something. It's new hardware where the software made for it won't work on the older platform.

You're gonna be caught up in the Apple thing of paying insane money for a product that Apple is gonna be replaced by a way better version in a year.

Plus, Apple is going to be directly competing with Nintendo who is basically a console version of Apple except they sell their products at a decent price have more 3rd party support, have top notch first party games, tons of recognizable and beloved franchises etc.

Sounds more like blind hope. Sounds like he thinks Apple dabbling in gaming with the iphone will lead them to creating a console or a dedicated gaming rig. Somehow I don't think so. I think Apple is making plenty of money off of their hardware and software. I don't see them jumping into a buiseness where you sell your console at a significant loss and make it up on royalties from software. I mean i would think if they TRULY wanted to at least start dabbling in gaming they would invest in Apple exclusive games first before making a full out console. Right now iphone aps are fun and creative and a great way for them to sell hardware. I don't think building a gaming rig is a natural progression from including a few games for their cell phones.

Exactly what I thought. It's going to look great in your living room and be compatable withipods of all kinds but what kind of gaming will it bring? No thanks. I'll stick with MS and Sony for now.

I agree.

On top of that, Sony made one mistake (too much emphasis on hardware). As long as it sticks with this console, and makes some *affordable* changes, then their problems will go away. They shouldn't be too hasty, and on top of that the PS3 really is not a bad gaming console, as it has got many exclusives and amazing exclusives at that.

I think Apple popped in a little too late, plus it's just a waste: it won't have a good line up of games.

Not to mention the fact that the 360 is far from flying over the PS3. The only console that has enough of a lead to brag is the Wii and with their new gimmick out of the bag and getting stale, we will see how they will create the same magic next gen.

I've had Apple products and other than my 1 ipod, they're good. Had a used mac and it was cool. But Apple usually charge an arm and a leg for their products and we saw how well that worked for Sony.

Apple aren't going to enter the gaming industry now. It's a market that's over saturated as it is. Their product would have to be so dramatically different to other consoles, that it couldn't be considered a 'console'.

So Macs can't beat PCs for computer games, what makes them think they will beat Microsoft, let alone established giants Sony and Nintendo?

They scored a hit with the iPod and iPhone but c'mon now, do we need a 4th console maker already?

Yay! A sleek, overpriced hunk of metal and plastic which will be outdated within a year 'cause Apple will re-release it with minor updates each time! Then teens will think it's the "in" thing cause it's from the iPod people and everybody who is "anybody" will own one! I can't wait:roll:

$250 is reasonable considering that it comes with the killer app and is the #1 system. The only option that cheaper is a 360 that's bundled with some games that nobody wants. And it's not way cheaper it's only $50 less. To get a game that's actually worthwhile, you'd end up paying the price as a Wii.

i could see it now. an expensive piece of hardware that could not do a lot of great things. think about this a nintendo wii just it is like $400-700 dollars. i was also thinking about something. since metal gear touch or what ever the iphone game is then a metal gear game can be on the apple console. if apple does make a system.

Plus, Apple is going to be directly competing with Nintendo who is basically a console version of Apple except they sell their products at a decent price have more 3rd party support, have top notch first party games, tons of recognizable and beloved franchises etc.

Senor_Kami

This is exactly why Apple will not enter the console market. Yes, I imagine they will increase the gaming aspects of their devices, but no they will absolutely not enter the console market...at least in terms of a traditional console.

This is because the console market is completely the opposite of Apple's business model. The console market is defined by a relatively static product (from a hardware perspective) that runs at a significant loss early and recovers its investment over the longer term. Apple is the exact opposite.

The parts of your post thatI highlighted are the main evidence.

Apple does not seek to sell to the mass/whole marketplace. They seek to sell to early adopters and the early majority. They do not seek to sell to the late majority or laggards. Their business model is to sell to the leading edge...over and over again. Their target audience is the person that has owned every version of the IPod at one time or another and bought an IPhone for $800 :)

Seriously, Apple's core strategy is to be an innovator. To offer the newest features first. And to sell their products at a premium price. They completely depend upon early adopters. And they are selling the same people over and over again. Because of this, they deliberately cannabalize themselves every 6 months to a year by releasing new hardware. The life of any model is measured by a few years at absolute most and normally under 24 months from introductionto obsolesence.

This is exactlywhy there are two camps of opinion about Apple products. Those that want the newest and coolest and find value in Apple's extra features and neat innovations, and are willing to pay a premium for a solid product. These people are generally the early adopters and early majority.

And then there are the people who think Apple is grossly overpriced, offering not much more, if anything, then the competition. That is because with 6-9 months of Apple introducing a product there are 5 imitators that introduce similar cheaper products...the copiers. This ****of people buy a little bit later andthey buy more on the price side of price/value. Of course the alternatives they are looking at seem better....they are comparing a competitors cheaper/later product against an Apple version that is already nearing obsolesence and will be eliminated within 6 months...but still Apple priced :)

Roll all that up, and the long game of the traditional console market is the exact oppositeof Apple's core business strategy. Expect them to push games on an ever changing, ever expanded feature set, on constantly changing and updated hand held consumer products....not on a static home console.

I for one support Apple entering the gaming market substantially.

If they do. The next generation of systems will be veeery interesting I think,

Digital distribution will play a huge role.

Downloadable apps and content are both PC, MS, and Apples strengths.

Ninendo has broaden the appeal of games beyond the hardcore and Apple could do the same to Apple fans and alternative p.c. users.

Make gaming online, on a tv and portable device even more seemless and intuitive.

The games market can still grow and Nintendo has proven that. Apple will no doubt bring more attention to the video game market and have a commanding lead when it comes to amatuer and start up developers for games -such as Itunes aps store. Something that MS has been trying to do with their Xbox community games. Which Apple is more successful.

The only downside I can see is maybe one of the other console manufacturers will be marginalised.

[QUOTE="cainetao11"]If Zune HD and 360 compatability is a strong point for future growth, I think Apple partners with Sony to have content directly downloadable from the PS3 to ipods. dmaximum

PSP2 will have direct downloads. Sony doesn't need Apple.

and Apple doesn't need Sony. Apple's apps store is huge and supported by 30 miilion Iphones sold and how many Ipod touch it will do and still does very well.

Yaaaay, split the market even more so we can increase development costs and lower profit margins! More and more I wonder if **** games are the future of gaming. Don't do it Apple; offer OSX for PS3 instead, I'd pay a good chunk of money for that.

apple introducing a gaming apple tv could be awesome. games, music movies all available for download from one store. Just needs to pack some serious power unlike most apple products. I could see ms turning the xbox into a pc that runs windows media centre and make some changes to the media center so it includes games support. Don't be surprised when ms doesn't release another xbox but instead migrates all xbox games over to a windows media centre pc with full xbox controller support and all the features of xbl put into gfwl. Nintendo will stay with the causals but sony will have to do something big to stay in. Consoles are moving away from plug and play and into media centre pcs.
