Ubisoft's new DRM in action

Be online or begone

The news
of Ubisoft's new DRM has raised a lot of questions, but now some got the chance to test it in action, and it's just as we expected it to be – far from grand.

While Ubisoft claims that this move should address piracy issues, we're not sure whether ridding users of offline playing mode is a wise thing, and we're yet to see how effective it will be in fighting piracy.

So, those lacking internet connection can thus wave goodbye to the games that will use this DRM, whereas those with connectivity issues such as occasional drops better stock up on tranquilizers, because they'll probably need them

The reason is simple – a connection drop due to your provider, lousy cable or a server drop will leave you with a screen (that you'll probably grow to hate pretty quick) offer a choice of saving your last checkpoint and quitting to Windows. All your progress since the checkpoint will be lost and we're wondering why customers should be inconvenienced this way as Ubisoft war on pirates is not what they paid for. Talk about customer service.

You can find out more here.

Fudzilla

This will be apart of the PC version of AC2. I mean a disconnection and you'll be thworn out? What have we come to PC gaming?:(

You know what is funny of this? Pirates will always find a way for remove the DRM and get away with what they want; meanwhile, legal customers will have to suffer because of this. I remember I saw that pc gaming isn't dying because of lack of games but it may die because developers and publishers do this.

The first thing I did when I read about it was this.

Luckily Ubisoft is not the kind of developer I'll miss.

Indeed. Worst case scenario for pirates, it will take them a week to circumvent this new type of DRM. Chances are it will be a matter of hours. Legit owners are the ones who'll get screwed by this.

I doubt this will stop piracy, but if indeed it does I'm ok with it. Though this may be a problem for people with unstable connection or no connection at all. This is not the way ubisoft.

I admit this seems abit too far and stupid on their part.

But it will NOT stop me buying the game as i doubt i will have any problems, no DRM has for me.

Theres no question however it will effect some people and its taking it the extreme which will do more damage for them really.

Damn, these CEO's are a bunch of half-assed idiots. Do they honestly think screwing over customers will stop piracy? And even if they did, those people still wouldn't buy the game. Looks like this will be another MW2.

Unfortunately my connection can prove very unstable at times. So I'm just going to have to give the PC version a pass.

Oh, and I am so going to laugh when this game hits the darknet. Which it will, I guarantee you. All DRM schemes eventually fail. This will not be an exception.

Ubisoft require that all of their games need an always on internet connection, as part of a new DRM and online services platform. We put your questions about their always-online DRM to Ubisoft in a phone interview last night. Their answers are below the link.

What's the problem this DRM is trying to address?
Ubi are increasingly concerned about piracy on the PC. "It's a huge problem - you know it, I know it, other people know it. It really is a very important issue that all serious companies need to address," says their spokesperson. But they also believe that their online services will make PC gaming better. "The real idea is that if you offer a game that is better when you buy it, then people will actually buy it. We wouldn't have built it if we thought that it was really going to piss off our customers."

So what's in it for gamers?
Ubi say there are three advantages to their online services. The first: you don't need a disc. The second: that you can install the game on as many PCs as you like, as many times as you like. And the third: the automatic uploading of savegames to Ubisoft's servers.

Do Ubisoft understand that we don't want to be permanently online?
They've spotted the outcry, yes. "We know that requiring a permanent online connection is not a happy point for a lot of PC gamers, but it is necessary for the system to work.

Which PC games will require an always on internet connection?
All announced Ubisoft PC games will include the online services, whether sold online, or from brick and mortar stores. That includes Splinter Cell, Silent Hunter 5, Assassin's Creed 2, Prince of Persia and the newly announced Ghost Recon. "It's hard for us to say, yes, from now until the day that we all die all of our games are going to include this," says their spokesperson, "but most will."

If my internet connection goes down during play, will I lose my progress?
That depends on the way the systems have been implemented. The two examples we have now, Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII, show differing implementations. In Assassin's Creed, if your connection cuts out, you'll be taken back to the last checkpoint. "With Settlers, your game will resume exactly where you left off," says Ubisoft's spokesperson.

How will I know what I'll lose?
"You'll have to wait for the reviews, and to hear what your peers are saying."

What happens if Ubisoft take the DRM servers offline for maintenance, or suffer a technical breakdown?
In the case of a server failure their games will be taken offline, and you'll be unable to play them. "The idea is to avoid that point as much as possible, but we have been clear from the beginning that the game does need an internet connection for you to play. So if it goes down for real for a little while, then yeah, you can't play.

"

Are Ubisoft trying to kill PC gaming?
One theory states that piracy is such a problem on PC that they'd prefer to move their customers to the Xbox or PS3. Their spokesperson disagrees. "No, we're not trying to kill the PC market. Are we frustrated by the PC market? I think everyone is. In the end it all comes back to one single truth: piracy is a big, huge, hairy problem. It's a market that suffered a lot because of piracy, and we're all just trying to figure out what we think is the best way to deal with it."

Do Ubi believe this DRM is unhackable?
They accept that it's all DRM's fate to be eventually hacked, explaining that internally, they've already talked of a timescale for how long their games will be protected by it. But, they believe that it's secure enough for them. "We wouldn't do it if we didn't believe in it. The guys who designed it believe in it. Do we think that it's the one system that God has sent onto earth that will never be cracked by anybody ever? We can't guarantee that, but we believe in it.

"

Does this mean that Ubi are dissatisfied with other online rights management platforms like Steam?
There's a hint of that, although Ubi are keen to praise Valve's online platform. "We think what Steam has done is amazingly valid, but aren't Steam games cracked amazingly fast? It's not a question of dissatisfaction, it's a question of 'we've got another idea, another way of implementing it, and we're going for it'."

What happens when it becomes economically inefficient to run the servers for these games? Will Ubisoft take the servers down? And will that mean we can't play the games we bought?

The first point Ubi makes is that they intend for the servers to stay up. "Say in 5 years someone who bought Assassin's Creed 2 wants to go back and play it, the hope is, the plan is that we'll be on Assassin's Creed, I dunno, 3, 4, 5, and the servers will still be there to serve those new games," explains their spokesperson. "They'll also be able to serve the old games." But Ubisoft have the ability to patch the DRM out of their games. "If for some reason, and this is not in the plan, but if for some reason all of the servers someday go away, then we can release a patch so that the game can be played in single-player without an online connection. But that's if all of the servers are gone."

Will Ubi make a firm commitment to removing the DRM if the servers are to be taken offline?

We'll paste the straight transcript here:

PCG: What I think a lot of us would really like is a firm commitment that you understand our worries that the servers are going to go down and suddenly we've just got some trash data on our hard drives that we've paid for.

Ubisoft: The system is made by guys who love PC games. They play PC games, they are your friends.

PCG: So you can commit to saying that those systems will be patched out?

Ubisoft: That's the plan.

PCG: It's the plan, or it's definitely going to happen?

Ubisoft: That's written into the goal of the overall plan of the thing. But we don't plan on shutting down the servers, we really don't."

A good idea in the lab, but it'll annoy the hell out of people in reality, and the pirates can hack it out anyway. Even the layers of hardware and software used to secure consoles eventually are cracked. Rule #1 of designing secure software: assume all users are malicious.

But, no, you cannot fight piracy like it is some enemy. It doesn't matter if you condone it or not, people are going to do it and fighting it is futile.

Hmmm the ps3 doesn't have piracy, now does it? So fighting it isn't always futile.

Many pc MMOs don't have piracy because the game is dependent on server created data. Copying the client doesn't do much when you need the server to provide the game.

PC piracy is a big problem and you can't be upset at publishers when the majority of people playing pc games aren't paying for them.

The real problem is the pirates, not the DRM. It's already established that pirates will steal anything, DRM free or not. We already saw this with the world of goo. Ubisoft's system may work, and it may not. But it is possible to combat piracy through server side processing.

The issue with this is that the industry seems to assume every game downloaded to be a lost sale. In truth there is no real way to no how many of those people would have actually bought the game. Meanwhile there are most certainly people that will be put off from buying it thanks to the DRM.

This new DRM sucks, but let's be honest...it's exactly how MMOs work and few gamers have problems with those. And Ubi knows what it's doing. If it was only Asassins Creed 2 most pc gamersc could boycott the game. But they're also releasing Settlers 7 and Silent Hunter 5 at the same time and few real PC games will be able to miss out on those just because they don't like the drm scheme

I've never seen anyone from the industry state that every pirated game is a lost sale but it is clear that there are people with disposable income that are pirating games. Go to a QuakeCon and you'll see people with $1000+ pcs offering pirated games like candy.

I don't doubt that this will discourage some people from buying AC2 but you can't be surprised they are trying this when pc piracy rates are so high. They see the success of MMOs when it comes to combating piracy and want to extend that success to their single player games.

There is a 99% chance pirates will have cracked this within a week, 70% chance of it being cracked within 2 days. Honestly it's not going to stop them. All this will do is piss off the actual customers or cause THEM to pirate it as well because the pirated version actually works better. I've already bought AC2 for my PS3 but if I hadn't I sure wouldn't be buying it for my PC now. These types of DRM are so fail.

[QUOTE="AncientDozer"][QUOTE="DerekLoffin"]There are reasonably anti-piracy measures, this is NOT one of them. Grats Ubisoft, you lost a customer.dc337

PC MMos? Do you know the word PRIVATE SERVERS? Ask NcSoft how antipirate the MMO system is

Is it pronounce you-be-soft or oo-bee-soft?clubsammich91
oo-bee-soft. And this new DRM thing sounds so wrong...what happens when you get disconnected (for whatever reason)? I mean, it happens sometimes..you just kicked out of the game or what? And how the hell do they think they can stop piracy with this? :?
