It's pretty clear to me now UC3 is most certainly a level above Gears3 in graphics. The lighting, textures, physics, animation and effects are just beyond what Gears3 has to offer. These shots here would shame any Gears3 shots you can find.

You just prefer UC3's art style. I would like to point out that Gears 3 has better shadow tech. And Gears 3 alsohas better texture filtering.

Motion blur is a bit more refined in Gears 3, And last but not least... There's more alphas being drawn per frame. (Hello grass and insane explosions)I mean Gears features some crazy explosions regularly due to the Lambent horde.

I would give the animations to Uncharted 3 though.

However... The motion blur with those "Sonic the Hedgehog" Locusts in Gears 3 are stunning.

And if you're paying close attention to that UC3 bullshot I posted... The AA could use a lot of work.

Looks good but that fight sequence was weak.

Low poly count and the bits of buildings sticking out of the sand look totally out of place, due to the crappy lighting.

LOL oh please, I know it's hard to admit it but the lighting and textures here are decisively better than any gears3 pics I've seen.

So the place where the sand and buildings meet in the bottom of the picture don't look awkward to you? Nor does that last gen looking rock/wall at the bottom left corner?

You seem to throw out "better lighting" whenever it suits your argument. I remember you saying Killzone 3 had better better lighting than Crysis 2 despite having no HDR.

And no the lighting and textures are not decisively better. One look at the Azura Map in Gears 3 makes it very obvious.

These consoles don't have enough ram to throw out the kind of better textures that you believe UC3 is using. Wait for Wii-U when that phrase actually makes sense.

UC3 has more dynamic shadow casting light sources though such as torches. I can't tell much difference in filtering at least in SP same as motion blur. Explosions are also abundant in UC3's beta and we really don't know more about its foliage until we see the actual game. But the big kicker such as HDR lighting, deferred lighting, physics based levels, elemental effects and animation all take massive processing power and that's really putting UC3 over and above Gears3 easily at this stage.

I never said kz3 has better lighting in terms of no HDR, but I did say it has more light sources and more shadow casting lights. As for Gears3 no matter what levels you're looking at it doesn't change the fact it's lacking HDR and deferred lighting, it's hard fact. Textures are no longer Gears3's advantage now judging from the latest shots and UC3 has more texture variation to boot.

Are you really comparing lambent explosions to explosions based on reality in Uncharted 3? The explosions in Gears areactually more intense.

The motion blur in Gears 3 is akin to God of War 3 where independant parts of the body are blurring instead of the entire body like it's doing in Uncharted 3. It's not object based motion blur for the sake of motion blur, it's motion blur done correctly.

Find me a section in Uncharted 3 where the explosions match this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTzVWc3t8zc

Also pay attention to the Lambent's arm... Notice the object based motion blur is focusing on his arm.

Again... Gears 3 offers better shadow quality.

Look at Trenches again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSqJrO5F-9U

Come on man... You should know by now that the Uncharted series cannot afford rendering all of that grass due to limitations with the RSX. It's the very reason why it's toned down in multiplats. The fillrate is not that high. Maybe if it had the PS2's fillrate.

As someone told you on Beyond 3D it doesn't matter if it's deferred or forward rendering. It's all about how the final image comes out. And last time I checked the majority says Gears 3 looks amazing. If Uncharted 3 needs to look better... It's time for new consoles.

If we're gonna go the texture variation route... There is only one king. And that's RAGE. (A multiplat to boot)

Look at that UC3 bullshot I posted. Are you seriously saying THAT has better texture quality than Gears 3? Really?

This game looks like a movie, not a video game. I would like someone to post the whole game without dying and I will watch it. Looks like a great movie. (I am not saying it isn't a great game, haven't played the video game part so I am only commenting on how great it would be as a movie).

I would wait until i have both, for now what i have see on Uncharted 3 does look more impressive that Gears 3,in Gears 3 detail is implemented heavily on close to screen characters and enemies, but the back grounds look bland and uninteresting,Uncharted 3 deliver a more balance product when detail is not just close to what you have in your face, but also far away, the Cruise scene was incredible, you have a rocking cruise fill with object and thing rocking from side to side, water moving from side to side things hanging,is juts a more beautiful experience to watch than a few great looking enemies or characters, and bland scenery. The same happen whit Killzone 2 vs Gears of war 2,where people claimed it had better effects than Killzone 2,video comparison showed how much much better effects were on Killzone 2 vs Gears 2,so i would have to wait to judge for my self what the trade off are.

The RSX is weak but is not like the xbox 360 is doing 500 million polygons any time soon, even less with the little help it gets from the CPU,the RSX is a good for nothing low fill rate GPU,i wonder what make those impressive PS3 games look like they do..

As for backgrounds... From what I've seen of the full leaked game... U are in for quite the surprise.

Funny that you mention that Killzone comparsion. I would say Gears 3 effects are easily on par with Killzone 2/3. I would give Gears 3 the edge for higher res transparencies.

UC3

From your own pic. The textures are not as good as Gears 3. Look at the wall up close (To the left)

And now let's look at Gears 3 again.

Gears 3

It was a good effort gpuking. But Gears 3 is still offering better texture quality.

Yeah people also say that about Gears 2. Which is odd because Killzone 2 is a 2009,i just told you that because that is what people use to say and Killzone 2 ended on top of Gears 2 quite easy. Trade off is something that has been on Gears of War since 1,you had incredible looking enemies, but few of them on screen at once, and they either blow into pieces or disappear in front of your eyes leaving ammo, now that is a trade off.

No I'm specifically talking about the object based motion blur and explosions (The main point of argument)of Gears 3 which Gears 1 and 2 lacked.

Did you even play the beta? lol

This isn't about trade off. This is a full engine upgrade.

Are we looking at the same textures here? The textures in Gears have better filtering. (You know.. It's called AF)Plus more POM.

Hell Killzone 3 has better textures than Uncharted 3.

As for shadow quality... Take a look at the video that I posted.

really? you think this is what the game will look like when you're playing it? :|

so the fact there are no characters, HUD or aliasing of any kind doesn't seem odd to you? its an obvious bullshot, at least he posted an in-game beta shot.

This whole Uncharted vs. Gears thing is so silly. Both games look amazing. Also, each game has certain things that it does better than the other that it can't be said either is superior to the other. In the end it's all a matter of taste. And the argument that Uncharted is too scripted or linear in comparison to Gears is a joke. Uncharted may have more cutscenes, but both games are linear and scripted. In Gears you reach a level, you defeat all the enemies in said level and you move on to the next level. Guess what? That's exactly how Uncharted works. You'd think Gears was a sandbox the way some Lems try to compare it to Uncharted.

Uncharted may have more cutscenes, but both games are linear and scripted. In Gears you reach a level, you defeat all the enemies in said level and you move on to the next level. Guess what? That's exactly how Uncharted works. You'd think Gears was a sandbox the way some Lems try to compare it to Uncharted.incuensuocha

Are we still arguing graphics?

The guy above me is correct, they both look stunning and great, and will be awesome to play.

I said that earlier... But then gpuking went into argument mode.

Honestly they both look too good.

Uncharted has always looked great visually, but the textures, explosions, and shadows were never the things that really impressed me. It was the realism of the animations and the attention to detail that impressed me and the Uncharted series easily dominates in that regard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7MiZwYPJKIthis was the first long clip I had ever seen of Uncharted 2, probanly 5 months before the game came out (this is BEFORE I had even bought Uncharted 1, btw!)

Right after seeing this clip, I have never been so confident to call a game GOTY. We all know what happened with UC2. It snagged GOTY from everywhere..

Back then people kept screaming graphics graphics graphics! Look at the textures, etc. To me that was all nice, but again that's not what impressed me. It was more of the animations and the way everything moves and comes together. It was attention to detail. In that clip you can see individual objects being tossed around or see the way that Drake touches each individual brick when he's climbing. They've built a lot of layered animations into Drake and have improved on that every game since.

That to me is what's so impressive about Uncharted along with the storytelling, seamless cinematic to gameplay transition, dialog, and characters.

Now we know that the online multiplayer is addicting too and that it will be huge improvement over UC2. Unfortunately, we have to deal with those who think that UC can't even touch Gears multiplayer even though they haven't played the Uncharted 3 Beta and don't realize how full and rich it is of gameplay and content.

Why can't I be this smart ? Great explanation, and thats what I love about Uncharted, its not stale or stiff, its a game that allows you to experience a real action/adventure game. A very well crafted one at that.

Here's that old engine argument.

Killzone 2 Vs. Gears of War 2

Now see the tech evolution of Gears 3...

BIG DIFFERENCE

I'm still baffled at those who say Gears3 looks exactly like Gears 2, and slightly better.

really? you think this is what the game will look like when you're playing it? :|

so the fact there are no characters, HUD or aliasing of any kind doesn't seem odd to you? its an obvious bullshot, at least he posted an in-game beta shot.

marklarmer

Maybe you will like this one better, look how much better the lighting is better shadows,so what is the excuse now.?

Come on i know Gears look great, but Uncharted 3 look better, there is no shame in that Uncharted 1 looked better than Gears 1,Uncharted 2 looked better than Gears 2 and from the videos i have see looks like the tradition will continue.

i never got how UC was hyped purely on graphics...tho the train level was good looking. Killzone to me was the game that had dem graphics....actually killzone 2 was the reason i got a ps3 years ago

The lighting was improve, but explosions remain almost the same with the difference of Gears 3 leaving more smoke or the smoke taking longer to dissipate,in characters models the difference is very small.
