Today i went through the hassle of disconnecting my Ps3 from my SDTV and connect to my 24 inch monitor (the one i use for my PC) through HDMI. The reason is Wipeout HD (finally!) coming. So, I played with a few games to see them again, or for fist time, "In their true glory."

The results... worst than i expected. Now I believe that many of them look better on my SDTV. At least the 480i signal hides most of the low res textures, aliasing, underwhelming lighting and bad framerate-screen tearing... This only makes me mad that the PSN store is so hard to navigate in 480i, the console doesn't win much from teh HD!.

You need to have HDMI cables to actually get 720+

If you don't have HDMI cables, then there's no point in hooking up a PS3 or Xbox to an HDTV.

A PSN downloadable game is not the best marker for its HD graphics. Try games like MGS4, Uncharted, and Ratchet. Then try some Blu ray movies. HD is obviously much better then SD, by alot.

You probably need to adjust your PS3 settings on Video Output and change everything to whatever your monitor can run in HD.

Its the same thing with the 360 and the PS3 in all fairness, HD makes some games look much better, but it also makes graphical flaws stand out alot more.

No, I tried MGS4, GTA4, SCIV (demo), R&C:ToD (demo), Uncharted (demo) and R:FoM. Is Wipeout HD up?

I agree that PS3's HD graphics are a little underwhelming, I think it's because that most games on the PS3 don't support 1080p. Even the game I'm looking forward to the most, Killzone 2, is only in 720p.

This thread deserves a big...WTFREAK!? You've been playing your PS3 on an SDTV but feel the games look and run better on that then they do an HDTV?

Once again WTFREAK!?

Is it really such a shocker, I mean isn't for e.g. MGS4 running at 1024x768 or something like that? So on a 1080p display you're basically streching a 780K pixel image to fit a 2200K pixel monitor, now that's a lot of streching and no upscale trick can hide that ugly truth. My advice - buy a hdtv so you sit further away, it looks fine that way.

Wipeout HD should look great tho, it's real 1080p(I think), The Darkness might be worth a try as well.

So you are telling all of us(indirectly) that seing a game in 1080p as opposed to 720p is so different that we all can just look at the screen and tell the difference?

Just like with 1080p/720p movies, the diff. is so little/minute that the hype is incredibly over done...

Its all about geting the best of the best...aka SPEND MORE MONEY ON MY PRODUCT TO GET LITTLE ENHANCEMENTS

The difference is not enough to warrant the hundreds of dollars in upgrades...

The resolution difference is incredibly pronounced for video games. The aliasing is reduced because the jaggies are smaller, you get more detail in textures, and more details in small geometry. With most movies the difference is less significant since it's just taken straight off a blurry film. Movies shot in digital look very good on Blu-Ray.

To be honest nothing this generation made me jump with amazement... the only thing that made my jaw hit the floor was the first time I saw the Crysis demo level on two 8800GTX's at work when you overlook the small camp near the ocean the iconic crysis moment, on a 24" monitor at 1900*1200 on very high with 4x AA... laggy but my gosh was it stunning.

I dont get much from 640p console games with jaggies and really horrible AF no matter what monitor it runs on... and I also had the same impact as you when I got my HDTV (samsung 32") not really a huge deal slightly cleaner thats it... the jaggies are more noticable.

And I wouldn't call these HD console's they are more HD if the developer chooses to run at 720p plus... which only a minority of games work in natively.

Well if you have a job and have extra money that wouldn't be going anywhere else, it's well worth it to buy a TV that's over 46 inches and has 1080p. There's a big difference in graphical quality between 720p and 1080p. But it also depends on how much detail is put into a game. Compare the launch titles of either the X360 and PS3 and you will see that games that have 1080i or 1080p look a lot better than those that are simply 720p.I remember playing Gears on 720p before I got my new HD tv and I was in awe when I switched the settings to 1080p.

Not really dude remember running games like GTA on 720p then switching to 1080p wouldn't be incredibly huge since the game is running at 640p and being bumped up to 1080p.

Games that where natively created at 1080p will look a lot better than the same game run at 720p on the same screen.

Resolution does make a difference streatching the resolution doesn't make much of a difference since the game will be still running of the same amount of pixels... maybe your confusing console's with PC's.

that is because your monitor is small so sdtv and hd really is no differance. try a 52" hd screen and hook it up in sdtv then hook it up in hd and see if you say the same thing.

the ps 3 looks like crap in sdtv setting on a hd 52" tv.

TC make sure :

1)RGD FULL RANGE (HDMI) is turned to FULL

2)Super White (HDMI) is turned ON

3)Video output settings is displaying 1080p

4)Go to game settings.Turn PS Upscaler to FULL and turn PS smoothing on.

Now while playing the game go into menu settings of the monitor and go to the information tab and check wether your actually playing at 720p or 1080p.

HD is simply BY FAR better than any SD.I have my PS3 hooked upto my rigs sync master 931bw and its FAR better than a normal SDTV.Even when it comes to frame rates.

35 mm original camera negative motion picture film can resolve up to 6,000 lines.

the new film can go up to about 8k (not including IMAX)

I have played both my ps3 and my 360 on a sdtv, a 32" 720p CRT, and a 40" 1080p lcd. Each time it was a huge step up. The difference from the sdtv and my new lcd is night/day. Try sniping on CoD4 on a sdtv, then try it on a big screen hdtv and say there is barely a difference. Assuming that all your settings and cables are done right, then you should see the same difference, though you are using a small monitor. Size matters. A possibility is that you have some amount of color blindness. I am not trying to give you hard time, I'm just saying it is possible. It is very common to have some degree of it. It is also something that you wouldn'tnecessarilyknow without being tested.

As it has been previously stated you wouldn't notice a big difference between 720p and 1080p movies unless you have a big screen and the film was shot w/ a digital camera. The most amazing example I can bring up is BBC's Planet Earth. Because of the camera they used sd vs 1080p is night and day difference. Ittrulyis astounding.

Sounds to me someone is trying to justify the reasons in not to buy a bigger tv lol. And how big is the tv you have now? And also what kind of monitor are you using, cause some times the monitors refresh rate and response time can cause some issues aswell. Especially if you think the game runs smoother on your sdtv. Just saying.

I have a 50" Samsung Plasma and I couldn't imagine playing it on anything else, also couldn't imagine going smaller. Had a chance at a 46" 650 series samsung lcd and I couldn't break away from my 50" size or bigger spec. for it lol.

Bottom line is if your playing on a 20-32" screen size sdtv and then switch to possibly same size hdtv you may not see that big of a difference unless you sit 2-4 ft away from it. Also on that sdtv sit same distance and see what you see, try it :) But hd really pays off at the 42" size and up. For my 50" I sit 8ft away when leaned up on the edge of my couch and I love it :)

HDTV>SDTV any day especially if setup properly.

that is because your monitor is small so sdtv and hd really is no differance. try a 52" hd screen and hook it up in sdtv then hook it up in hd and see if you say the same thing.

the ps 3 looks like crap in sdtv setting on a hd 52" tv.

That's because the PS3 comes with composite cables, unless you were just being sarcastic....

I spent a long time playing in SD this gen, and I kinda felt the same as you. I played my 360 on an SD TV, only playing on an HDTV on rare occasions, but it wasn't until I started playing in HD on my pc monitor that I truly noticed how much better it was. It felt like I was playing a totally different game at times.

When I got my PS3, i didn't even want to play my two games for it as I had an HDTV coming the next day. I just played Crash Bandicoot all day.:P

It's funny because i used to think playing in HD wasn't all that great.

I've found it very hard going back to SD.

There is a huge difference between SD and HD resolutions. If the TC can't see that then he needs to get his eyes checked.

I'm doubting he actually hooked it up.

do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Actually that is somewhat true. The bigger your TV the more important HD resolutions become.
