MS definately made the push for online gaming serious. and are currently have the best system (Live) but theyre really holding it back ... A unified service, atleast for multiplat games would be excellent, especially if it's something the developers want to do.
Whilst this news isn't THAT important, it's definately helping me chose which console i'll be buying next gen.
sts106mat
a unified service might work one day and for certain types of games, i just dont think its entirely neccessary. and live works so well because its closed, paid for and therefore has to be well maintained.
you can get some user generated content with Halo and Far cry etc, but allowing users to run custom firmware was what caused the problem with the hacking, so it would be a no vote from me on opening live for everything.
It's not neccessary at all, however when the competition has it it MS should be striving to get it, and improve upon it.
They started it this gen, with games for windows live. Game slike Shadowrun worked fine with PC users (Underrated game) Infact Shadowrun was a little like counter strike, albeit with magic.
Don't be mad at Valve, be mad at Microsoft and their cocky attitude. What they've been saying lately is "if there's an exclusive on another system, then we don't want it, if there is a multiplatform game; then it has to be equal to or better than the PS3 version. If those cases do not apply, then the game will not be on the 360" No wonder they're not getting many PS3 exclusives, they basically believe that they're too high and mighty to steal exclusives from Sony. They also have extremely strict rules on the XBL service that don't let you use KB/M, and they didn't agree to steamworks on XBL. I don't get it, do they want an inferior version of all Valve games? I really don't like Microsoft and the way they handle things.
I can imagine the gnashing of teeth and return of games when PS3 users get hopelessly owned, Keyboard and mouse support isn't like PC support your using generic drivers so those fancy dpi settings, high accuracy and such on that pc mouse? yep only basics are supported on the ps3 its not like you can plug in a 24 button mouse and all the buttons work on the ps3.
your getting generic usb drivers even if you use a mouse and keyboard high precision mice users on the PC will be owning you.WilliamRLBaker
Thats the first time iv ever nodded in agreement whilst reading one of your posts, even if you did only say it as a jealous dig at the PS3 because youre an xbox fanboyism.
It's kind of funny how lems always talk about the "superior multiplats" making 360 better, but when a game has clearly better/more content and features on the PS3 version, it's "why should 360 players care? we still get the game." Yeah... like how even when 360 multiplats being better was ARGUABLY true (you know, 2-3 years ago), the only difference was a few extra pixels, so not only did ps3 players still get the game, they got a virtually identical experience.
On another note, wasn't it just yesterday someone posted how third party publishers were required by MS to have feature/content parity on multiplats, or they might refuse to allow the game on 360? Having the rule makes them look like bullies. Having the rule, and then not enforcing it when someone calls their bluff? That just makes them look sad.
Cool! I'm more interested in the fact that we're getting cross platform play again, Portal 2's cross platform play was so seamless with PC players that it played as if I was playing with PSN players. And with that in mind PSN and PC players will have a huge playerbase on CS:GO
The keyboard/mouse thing will definitely make the game more fun
Would probably feature cross platform voice chat like Portal 2 did..Cool! Well known fact? Well I have both Live and PSN and not only do I have no trouble getting into full games on either system, but they both perform just the same. But I guess everyone should believe someone whose sole purpose in life is to worship at the alter of a piece of plastic. The PS3 Fanboys grasping at any semi good news. This game will be an irrelevant non factor on consoles, just like BF3 2 weeks after it launches.
Enjoy the cross game play PSN users, even though multiplayer on PSN amongst itself is barley passable. I love the confidence in PSN when it is already a well known fact the serivce is sub-par on its best day, you think STEAM and Gabe will somehow change this? LOL
SONY Fanboys will honestly believe anything as long as it defends their precious piece of plastic.

I think the PSN hack was caused by an exploit the custom firmware allowing the user to disguise their console as a dev console, maybe i am wrong, that was the explanation i last heard? up to date live figures:- courtesy of http://majornelson.com/?s=e3 "In the first four months of 2011, Xbox 360 has seen a 29 percent year over year increase in sales, which is more than triple the growth of PlayStation 3 and the largest growth of any console on the market. There are now nearly 35 million active Xbox LIVE members worldwide spending an average of almost 60 hours a month on the service. Cumulatively Xbox LIVE members are now logging 2.1 billion entertainment hours a month." so your first link is now old and off by 10 MILLION gamers. The part about the PSN hack doesn't contradict what he said. As far as I know, you're right, but his point still stands. It had nothing to do with Sony allowing devs to give away dlc or integrate cross-platform play with Steam or any of that stuff that is being talked about when someone says "PS3 has a more open network."[QUOTE="tormentos"]According to William Baker the PS3 has bad mouse and Key board support, since when he is an authority on anything PS3.? Mouse and Keyboard work well on PS3,i have use to is just as responsive as they are on PC,remember the PS3 was use to run linux which is a PC OS. Opinion.? ""Of our 25 million members, about half of them are subscribers to the business and pay us about $60 a year for that," Durkin stated. "So it's a very large business for us and for our partners"" http://news.softpedia.com/news/Half-of-Xbox-Live-Users-Are-Gold-Subscribers-170284.shtml It is a fact about half of xbox live subscribers are gold, about half but not half or over half,is not my opinion. MS report of last year about live sales put it at 600 million dollars just from gold subscriptions, divide 600 million between 50 dollars, and you will get 12 million. http://www.1up.com/news/microsoft-25-million-xbl-users So when MS was reporting 25 million live users only 12 million were gold and 13 million silver. The PSN hack has nothing to do with the PS3 having and open platform nice one,the PS3 has had and open platform since 2006 and it was hacked a few months ago,it had nothing to do with how open the platform is. Is open so developer can release free content on it without restrictions from sony, unlike what MS do if a company want to give you something free MS has no right to step in the way,is just pure greed what they have show with xbox live, which already is extracting a fee from you to keep the so call service running.sts106mat
Also, yes, the 25 million is outdated. It's from last year. He even mentioned that in his post. It's brought up because they also mentioned that half of those 25 were Gold accounts. This year, when they announced 35 million, they didn't mention how many were gold. We could just assume about the same Gold attach rate, which would put it at around 17 million, but who knows. Seems like if the percentage stayed the same or went up, they'd have mentioned it. Maybe the fact that the didn't include it this year indicates that while total Live accounts went up by 10 million, the percentage of those that are gold actually went down? We have no way of knowing, making the 35 million figure pointless. It's about as valid as the 77 million PSN accounts figure.

""Thing for the PS3, because there would only be 10 people on PSN without the PC community?"" So he make a joke about the PS3 having a small community, but ask me any real reason as why cross platform play is good when it will increase the community,so bigger community only counts when they favor the xbox 360.
[QUOTE="tormentos"]No open platform mean that developers can release content and have less restrictions than xbox live, again the PS3 wasn't hack because it was open,is that would be even close to be true it would had been hack since 2006,and not just a few months ago,but just to kill your argument PSN still open, why hasn't been hack again if been open was the problem.? Active means you connect your xbox online, either silver or gold. Since Silver doesn't allow for online gaming is useless, to brag about something that doesn't allow you to do pretty much anything is useless, but download a demo and do other minimal stuff, the fact that you can't even get into facebook says it all. Yeah i see xbox fans claiming PSN games has few people, not very reliable source. Many people don't actually know that, and jump to the 360 and find out they have to pay,not all casuals are up to date with live, even less those Kinect ones, there is something that stop you from going online on xbox live,is call a fee if you don't pay it you don't play, get facebook, tweeter, netflix you get pretty much nothing. Using silver is silly is worthless.sts106matI believe ( i may be wrong) that The hack was due to the "open" format i.e. allowing the use of custom firmware, one iteration of which was the " other OS" software which sony withdrew i believe. I was a silver member for months on end when playing oblivion, when i wanted to play online, i paid up, no problems. again why do complain so much, you dont pay for live, i dont complain about PSN being free, or having PSN+?The "open" network doesn't mean they allow CFW. They don't allow it. That's why Geohotz got sued. The ability to run CFW isn't because the network is open, it's because the core security key was cracked and released to the public by a hacker. This may be due to a flaw in Sony's code, but it has nothing to do with Sony's policy on what to allow the devs to do on the PSN.
To bring this back on topic. You asked what the benefit of this is. Maybe you see no benefit in cross-platform personally, but it's a feature people have talked about for as long as there has been online multiplats. I don't see the benefit of cross-game chat. Doesn't mean it's not considered an advantage by the majority of people. Whether or not it's enough of an advantage to warrant the cost of Live is very much debatable, but most people would agree it is an advantage. Not having an extra feature is rarely better than having it. Then there is 3 options for control versus 1. Having a choice between pad, move, and kb/m is better than being limited to just pad. Oh, and then there's the free content updates that Steam and PSN users will get that Live users will not. This is not like graphical differences that can't even be seen without magnifed side by side still frame comparisons.
It's a shame they're not doing it for all 3 systems as I'd love to be able to play with 360 gamers but at least I'll be able to play against my PC friends.fabz_95They would like to, but MS doesn't want them to.
I've seen people who can't aim with a mouse, and I've seen people who have supernatural speed and accuracy with a controller. In the end, it's the comfort the player has with the input method and how skillful they are, and not the input method itself, that will determine the victor.Haha, join pretty much any counterstrike game using a controller and you'd be lucky to get a .5 kill/death ratio. The mouse is superior to the controller, period. The average level of skill is way higher on pc.I am better with a pad than with a mouse, for no other reason than that's the control scheme that makes more sense to me.
Pug-Nasty
I'm not sure what the big hype about cross platform play is really. Personally I could care less who I play as long as when I go to play a match there are people to play.

A lot of gaming mice aren't fully supported in OS X either (the logitech mx 518 to name one). I take it they're going to get owned by PC users as well?
What do you mean? I'm using that exact mouse in OSX Lion right now (have used it through Leopard and Snow Leopard as well). All the buttons work, the side ones, the top ones. Even the speed up/down precision buttons. Unless you mean that useless application that came with it, but I havn't even used that in Windows (through 3 OSs) in years.
no cross gaming with pc guys?
that sounds like it should be an advertising blurb on the back of tha box.
ms needs to put an eleventy billion dollar ad campaign around the concept of not having to play with them.
because Valve knows consoles gamers go after the newest thing, so CS:GO will get forgotting FAST even on the PS3
Oh you PS3 gamers dont know what youre getting into :PIantheoneassuming that ps3 owners dont have experience with kb/m also. mabey youre assuming its going to be an easy win...

at lest we'll be able to find a match, x box 360 version of this will be dead within a couple of months. at least ps3 will get instant updates through steam and free dlc most likely like the stuff thats coming for portal 2. face it microsoft being stingy is the only reason this is happening.

I am very excited about this. After that experiment Microsoft did, I didn't think I would see cross platform play for many, many years. It is also nice that the PS3 version will get to have m/kb support.
Link for the MS experiment:

Meh. I recall playing the PC beta for Crysis 2 with my 360 gamepad and still scoring in the top three consistently. Either the PC gamers I played against really sucked, were all using Gamepads just like me or their l33t skillz with the mouse and keyboard are tremendously overrated.

The_Game21x
Counter Strike is nothing at all like the horrid Crysis 2. It's all about precision. Gamepad users won't stand a chance.
