"Valve has just revealed that they have over35 million active customers on Steam. If you remember theysaidthere were approximately 30 million last year. So it's definitely a good bump for them in one year. Steam also hit 4 millionconcurrentusers online this month.

Steam is now available in 237 countries and in 21 languages, and for a platform that had a really slow start in 2004, this is simply phenomenal.

Valve says,

Steam is our direct pipeline to customers. It began as a little sleeper project—a handy tool to update Counter-Strike—and morphed pretty quickly into the world's largest online gaming platform.Steam guarantees instant access to more than 1,800 game titles andconnects its 35 million active users to each other—and to us.Through Steam, fans can easily buy, play, share, modify, and build communities around Valve products as well as titles from other independent game studios. Steam is available in 237 countries and 21 different languages.

Gabe Newell mentions that to handle the growth of Steam, they have upgraded their infrastructure. For 6 million unique users logging on the platform per day, the infrastructure has to be solid, and Valve realizes the importance of this.

Newell says, "To meet this demand, the Steam infrastructure has been increased and now has ability to run at 400Gps, enough bandwidth to ship a digitized version of the Oxford English Dictionary 92.6 times per second."

Then they hint about the improved Source engine.

In addition to Steam, there is Source, our own state-of-the-art game engine. Its sophisticated character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics, shader-based rendering, and super extensibility have helped us create some of the most popular and good-looking games on the market for computer and consoles. We don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better.

It can only mean one thing – yeah you know what. But let us know what you think in the comments section below. Is Valve going to announce 'it' soon?"

Um, well, wow.

Why not? It's been thoroughly tested and debugged. No sense throwing that away without a compelling reason.

Hm. More "it" would be a nice change of pace from shooters nowadays that are basically on-rails. That is if we're talking about the same "it."

They sound sound like IW/Treyarch regarding the 12 year old Quake 3 engine they use for COD.

But we arent, we are on Unreal Engine 3 which is exactly the same system that Value is using. The Source engine from 8 years ago is different than the Source Engine used in Portal 2 and now Counter Strike Global Offensive, they have been updating it every year just like Unreal Engine. Source Engine 3 which is the version that they are hinting at will likely be just as major of a improvement of Unreal Engine 3 was to Unreal Engine 1 and 2.

If valve were to post articles about the updates they have added into the engine and start calling it "source 2.0" or something people wouldn't have a problem.

While they dont post what Verizon of Source is, they do post when they update the engine, for example Half Life 2 today looks drastically better than it did when it was first released.

"a handy tool to update Counter-Strike.." Sounds familiar to EA's story about Origin, no? :P Anyways, Congrats Valve. That is with no direct marketing what so ever for Steam, wow. Now imagine if Valve started up marketing for the service. Those numbers will skyrocket.

Not sure but registered users are large. Active customers however would be very small in comparison, and concurrent users moreso - XBLA hit the 1 million mark a while ago, doubt it has swelled like Steam has to its 6 million.[QUOTE="II_Seraphim_II"] progress seems like a compelling reason. If we used ur logic, we would all be on the unreal engine 1

I can tell you that Unreal 3 is on Unreal 1 foundations - from the toolset to the scripting language, much like how Source is on the GoldenSource foundations (modified Quake 1). Reality is making game engines, and *the tools* is an artform in itself.

The most amazing aspect of these stats is that they are far from including all dedicated PC gamers. I know personnally many people that either don't have a Steam account (rare) or haven't logged on it in years (more common), so they wouldn't count as "active members".

Nah, the engine is very limiting when it comes to level size and the SDK is way harder to use than UE3/Cry3/etc. Probably just gut 99 percent of it and dub it Source 2 or something. I'd sure hope they'd give the HL series justice by expanding the possibilities. Probably what they're doing.

Almost a year ago, Valve said they have three surprises for us in one year. The first was DOTA 2, the second was CS:GO. And now they are telling us that Steam "is about to get much better." What are you planning, Valve?

I'm willing to bet they'll announce something HLcentric towards the end of the year, on a new engine that's an overhaul from Source - as Source is about to go free ala UDK.
