again..people like myself who are VR nut balls are waiting for the upcoming 2.0 version of both Oculus and HTC as well as HTC standalone and the new standards for the wire inputs.
right now would not be a good time to buy a new headset, its best to wait until the 2.0 version are out.
This doesn’t really surprise me. While I imagine that there will always be a market for VR I think that it’s pretty niche. I imagine for most it’s just a passing fancy and after the initial “wow” factor they tend to just put it aside and move on.
Those charts mean very little. They aren't comparing numbers to last year and they are only counting certain bundles, and Vive has had a huge stock shortage recently.
Gear VR sales can be explained entirely by the fact that they aren't being shipped with phones anymore as that period has ended.
And it's natural that sales would be higher around the holiday period anyway.
If you actually look at the real charts like I have, you'd see that almost all headsets are selling at a consistent level in the last year, some of them increasing even.
Oculus Rift is consistently in the top 100 now.
@tryit: VR has been dead for awhile, time to accept it.
like I said, HTC Vive 2.0 is coming out, a new standard for the wire problem is released, Oculus 2.0 is being worked on and both HTC and Oculus have released or about to release stand alone headsets, Valve is still working on their 3 major VR titles (which high end games can take 3 years to produce)
This is why people are not buying, this is why vendors are not advertising, this is why developers are not releasing major titles.
its not a good idea to buy a headset right now

You do realize Facebook are investing more into VR than Sony? And their investments are only increasing every year. They plan to push another $3 billion into VR over the next 9 years and the sales are basically on track with what they expected, so they do not regret anything.

The market for VR will be huge as time goes on. It's a niche now but there's no reason to think it will be anything but big as the tech improves.
Here are the real charts:
https://camelcamelcamel.com/Oculus-Touch-Virtual-Reality-System-pc/product/B073X8N1YW?active=sales_rank
https://camelcamelcamel.com/HTC-VIVE-Virtual-Reality-System-pc/product/B00VF5NT4I?active=sales_rank
https://camelcamelcamel.com/PlayStation-VR-4/product/B01DE9DY8S?active=sales_rank
As you can see, pretty consistent compared to a year ago. The recent drop for Vive is only due to a large stock shortage.
Edit: I think this should prove to OP how easy it is to manipulate chart data: https://camelcamelcamel.com/PlayStation-4-Slim-1TB-Console/product/B071CV8CG2?active=sales_rank
If we judge PS4 off that in the last 6 months, it seems PS4 is dying.

They might be investing more in VR than Sony, but Sony is dominated the VR market. Facebook has not idea how to sell VR, Sony does.

Investment in VR is not actual customers buying the product.

but people (such as me) are consciously and deliberately not buying explicitly because they are waiting for the second generation. (although to be fair i have first generation).

Investment factors in regardless of your intentions because it leads to new hardware which helps keep VR alive. Facebook are no doubt happy that they jumped into VR this early because they have the best chance of being market leaders in the next few years.
From what we know so far, Oculus will probably have the best 2nd gen headset and for a reasonable price, cementing their spot in PC VR, and they have the cheapest / most accessible standalone headset to date and another one on the way which will be the most premium standalone.

Because Oculus have revealed prototypes for gen 2. HTC said they are working towards gen 2. Google revealed displays for gen 2. LG is working on a new headset. Samsung is working on a new headset, etc.
Basically all the major players are investing in VR now more than ever. Gen 2 is a guarantee.
I don't have a VR set, only use the HTC Vive my friend has a few times. I'm still waiting on it to get better. Right now, we are still in the early times of VR with headsets that are bulky and some still using a cord, games are basic and it's still kinda buggy at times, but I hope in the next few years, it will be good enough to get into for everyone to enjoy. But as it stands, VR has two barriers:
Both the Vive and the Rift requires a high-end gaming PC, which is expensive from the perspective of the average consumer. A VR ready gaming PC is going to cost at least $450 in addition to the cost of whatever headset is chosen (roughly another $400-800), which puts VR further into the realm of luxury. Even PSVR, the least expensive option, requires a minimum investment of $550 for the cost of a PlayStation 4 and a PSVR Headset. As has been proven by the low sales of the Xbox One X and original Xbox One, as well as the slow adoption of the PlayStation 3, consumers have little desire to pay more than $400 a gaming product.
I mean lets be honest right now. VR is still exploring, it;s still learning itself, and it's price tag will always be quite high compared to other gaming experiences, at least in any foreseeable future. I feel like VR is so much more interesting as a way to reboot the worlds of Arcade. I know few people who would go to locations that offered a wide variety of VR experiences, including myself. But I haven't seen much of that yet locally.
The main problem is it seems everyone is pushing for a costumer-owned experience and IMO, it's a bad idea for now at least. Give VR a few more years and it will grow, but it's still in it's early stages.
There will always be a market for VR I think, but it will likely remain very niche.
There is really nothing to suggest it will. There aren't any particular long-term barriers that prevent VR from being mainstream. The only thing that we don't know for sure can be fixed is motion sickness, but games can design around this, and non-gaming apps don't have to pay as much attention since they are less likely to care about moving you in extreme ways. If you're in a virtual theater, a virtual home, in a social app, or at a concert event, you don't have to move much at all.
In 20 years, I absolutely see there being billions of VR users as everyone would likely have Mixed Reality (AR + VR) glasses as the successor to the smartphone.

This is different though. Gen 2 is the turning point and everyone working on the tech knows that. The big barriers to cross will happen in generation 2. There's no reason for them to give up now when the light is at the end of the tunnel.
Oculus in particular are giving another 5 year prediction speech at their annual conference later this year for what VR will be like in 2023. The previous 5 year prediction was made a while back and is likely to be exceeded, and that prediction was already way beyond what people expected of VR in only 5 years.

Hehe. On a serious note, though, that is in fact a sign of science going too far imo. Not sure if you're privy to particular (...) Nvidia AI software for facial/body creation, as in creating humans out of thin air, or transferring one's real face onto another's head on actual video, but....it's disturbing, to say the least. Or rather, the implications are disturbing.

I'm very excited for the evolution of AI through AR / VR, The fact that in the future you can eventually step inside a world indistinguishable from reality and be playing with AI that is indistinguishable from humans is insane. Combined with some kind of memory wipe technology, if at all possible, you could literally live another life in another world from scratch.

Basically, when it comes down to it, the "line" for me is when tech enters my body, whether it be via microchips or whatever else. I can't go there. I will never allow myself to be chipped. I'm okay with putting a VR headset on my head, but when the tech crosses the skin threshold, I'll say goodbye to VR. I also don't want my brainwaves messed with in any manner, whether it be external or internal artificiality. That's just me, though. I have my limits.

nutberry bandit is on another level though. this guy would swallow VR's jizz if it could actually squirt. This guy i think works for some kind of VR thing so its life and death for him.

I mean, dude, come on. You show up claiming I made a joke of a thread, when the thread is obviously no joke, as I care about the subject matter. You say I pulled the thread out of my ass, when the thread is mostly all factual. You say I did not put effort into the thread, when in actuality it is filled with quotes, discussion, gameplay video, linkage, etc. etc. And you do this sort of thing on a regular basis; you certainly treat me in this way like in every thread I make. What am I honestly supposed to think of you when you act like this?
