Dont get me wrong, technically, MGS4 is an outstanding game, but i was let down with the huge amount of cutscenes, some of which were really cheesey, especially towards the end, i think Kojima tried to hard to make the user feel emotional about it, when in fact, it should have been more natural, as i personally felt most emotional when

(SPOILERS)

snake was about to shoot himself. All of these cutscenes slowed the gameplay down, which didnt leave me addicted to the game as i wold have liked.

In addition, i believe MGS3 was a better game by far, but not initially after i beat the game, but i appreciated it more when i completed MGS4

Id also like to know what makes this game a must own? i really dont get it, or the fact why people would want this on the 360, it a very good game but nothing more imo.

Blown away by what? it definitely has one of the best gfx on consoles this gen (just behind uncharted and gears imo) but there was probably about 4 hours gameplay in the whole thing which i was really disappointed with.

I blame Payton and his westernizing. The previous MGS games were good without him. Even Kojima said MGS4 isn't the MGS4 he had in mind. Hopefully Metal Gear Existence is fully Kojima influenced. Also what if Metal Gear Existence is Kojima's plans for MGS4 without Payton's ideas? I dan only hope. Don't get me wrong MGS4 still is the best game I played thus gen.

I were also dissapointed with MGS4, but that's because I haven't played the other Metal Gear games. I just couldn't get into the story and I thought the gameplay wasn't stealthy enough.

Never have i seen such well done story telling done through cutscenes, its like a hollywood movie, but more deeper. it blew me away and it has a heavy felling to it, pretty emotional..and thats what Kojima-Sun wanted to achieve. gameplay is different, while much more engaging and better, i was kinda let down by the lack of good moves, one being the classic neck breaker, it wasn't there.

but all in all, the game was incredible, from the boss battles, story telling and gameplay, it was the whole package.

Your complaint while valid, is just another cutscene bashing one. you can't deny the story and just how well done it was.

but after saying all this, i prefered MGS3's gameplay and overall enviromental settings/war stories. i loved being able to sneak behind a guy using the dpad to softly sneak and then grab them and interigate the enmie, including breaking there neck, etc.

it worked good for MGS3 setting, but have Snake do it in MGS4 (neck slitting) seemed misplaced, as he wasn't that type of guy as big boss.

but yeah, my 2 cents.

I never was a huge fan of the series but i always liked them. With mgs4 i really didnt like the lengthy cutscenes and installs.I found myself having a hard time getting through the game because i just simply dont have the time to put into a game thats mostly cutscenes.I wanted the multiplayer to be good but i was really let down by it.

play it without being spotted, once...its been done before and i'm half way through it. it isn't easy. using nothing but stun guns or tranqualizers and combat, to get passed.

MGS is a stealth game and a good one, just depends on how u play it.

you should have also beaten the previous ones, otherwise 4 is a blur, storywise.

I love MGS4, but I definitely see MGS3 as the superior game. Some people thought the "Westernization" was a good thing, I have to disagree. To me, Metal Gear Solid was about it's heavy dose of cutscenes and it's mechanics. MGS4 felt to much like a TPS. That said, playing through on The Boss difficulty somewhat rectified that.

That's why Xbox360 kids like you shouldn't play mature games like MGS4 that are too complicated for your simple minds.

Your attention span is not long enough to hold as story thats why you like the shallow action that is Halo. Leave the awesome story driven game for the older crowd.IvyCassandra

 Wow... just wow. So now anyone who happens to be disappointed in MGS4 has to be a "young, 360 gamer"? With that kind of amazingly stupid logic, I think you might have some growing up to do.

how was it westernized? it just changed a camera system/perspective when playing, something a lot of games ripped off from RE4 a japanese game.

MGS3 had the exact amount of action, you can play just like, MGS4, but from the classic 3rd person perspective.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I prefered the old camera. I've been playing the Metal Gear series since the MSX so I guess I'm just used to it. But like I've said before, I still loved MGS4 and it's easily the best game I've played this gen, followed closely by GTA IV. As for the RE4 camera, I do believe Splinter Cell had it first :P

How can Game of the Year 08 dissapoint?

Wow. Playing MGS4 makes you feel Superior all of a sudden? Why? Because it's a PS3 exclusive?

Ahh forget it. You're just another cow troll who bashes the 360 and Halo every chance you get. Oh and by the way Halo isn't "shallow". All the reviewers say it's a great game and you should agree with them :)

Hey, he gave me the reasons why he was dissapionted with it. To me, it seems like he couldn't pay attention to the cut-scenes. That is a sign of a ADD child, like most children who can't stand watching a good movie, he always needs something to occupy his mind.

And i gave a rebuttal to the reason why he doesn't like the cut-scenes. To not like a game because a story is being told is obviously because you don't have a good attention span. The cut-scenes in MGS4 are nowhere bad, infact they were really action packed and interesting.

Same thing with GTA4, they move the story along. If you can't wait through the story, then those aren't the games for you. You're better of playing some mindless FPS with no story.

Or maybe TC was disappointed in MGS4 because there were too much cutscenes and not enough gameplay? That's his reason why.

Stop making up crap.

The game started well, but went a bit downhill IMO. I don't mind the cutscenes, I am a seasoned MGS player, but the game didn't have enough gameplay to back it up. Towards the end of the game i'd watch about half an hour of cutscene, play for 10 minutes and then watch another half an hour of cutscene.

The gameplay turned into more of an action game as well. There was very little stealth here. I am used to gameplay where I have to watch the guards patrol patterns and then plan out my path. This one just didn't have much of that. One of my favour "levels" was the black back to the original!!!!!

its still a great game, no matter how you look at it. Just very different.

I found MGS4 to be technically brilliant with astounding presentation and production values, but the story was a pretentious, preachy, overly convoluted mess of a narrative that served only to confuse. Yes, I sat through all the cut scenes, and I actually started taking notes to keep track of all the absurd plot twists. After a while I just gave up, and consequently started not to care about any of the characters or their relation to the schizophrenic storyline. Then it all became very laughable when it attempted to bring any emotional element into play.

On top of this, Kojima needs to know when enough is enough. He needs to hire an editor. I don't mind long cut scenes as long as they serve a purpose (as in, a decent story), keep pace and are efficiently implemented, but there's many throughout that were just ridiculous. Example: when Liquid Ocelot was being apprehended by the army on the river, it showed soldiers surrounding him for minutes on end. It easily could've been done in thirty seconds and attained the same effect, but dragged on and on to no further benefit. Many cut scenes were like this. It was blatantly clear throughout the game that while Kojima has a very talented studio, he desperately needs to go to film school.

Boy, here comes the flames. Anyways, to answer your question TC......yes I was.

See that is what makes me upset. Although I haven't played it yet, if I wanted to watch a bunch of cutscenes then I'd watch a movie instead.

If it's as bad as how it was with SoL that'll suck because I thought MGS2 was the weakest MGS game. Snake Eater had a good balanced between gameplay and cutscenes.

Lol, the cutscenes are worth watching still.& they're interactive & some refresh your memory if you haven't played the previous games in a while. Dont be surprised if the first 30 min are mostly cutscenes, I warned you :P & it's mainly in par W/ the amount from Snake Eater. Excluding the de-briefing scenes(Yo still interact in them).

Started ok, rose to greatest on chapter 3, went down hill from there.

Honestly, those saying it's the greatest gaming experiance ever need to play more games, I'm not bashing your opinion so much but..it had like 3-5 top hours of gameplay, total. Was an OK game, amazing if you enjoy watching cut scenes.

It's fault is it was a game specifically made for the fans. Kojima said it himself. It was a tribute to the fans. He wouldn't have made it unless we pleaded him to. The reason this game was in such high demand was because MGS1 & 2 didn't tie up the loose ends. The story was so strong we had to know what happened & how those charavters ended up (e.g Meryl getting marred to Akiba, which I thought was a twist. Raiden becoming a cyborg, which is what ended up happening to him,) Of course those are minor examples so don't flame me for everything I left out :P

The reason why developers are dumbing down games and not giving a crap about story anymore is because of simple minded short attention span gamers like the TC.

TC if you don't like great story driven games that are told like a masterpiece, i think you should play too human instead. It's very shallow and the story is pretty stupid, you will enjoy it because all you do is kill the same enemies over and over again. But then agian, your simple mind will think that's fun because it's "action"

IvyCassandra

Story told like a masterpiece? I'm sorry, but as a whole the storytelling was way too imbalanced for my liking. For every amazing cutscene (Europe water scene, radiation crawling, technical desciption of the system), there were also some of the most belabored and boring cutscenes.

I'm sorry, but the Beast death sequences and proceeding Drebin monologues are some of the worst attempts at story telling in a game. And the fact that they happen 4 times only made the bile rise higher in my throat. Even though I enjoyed the experience as a whole, having tons of innane and redundant dialog doesn't make it a masterpiece. I tend to agree with Zero Punctuation, who said it best: Kojima has diarhea of the mouth sometimes, which drags down the already long cutscenes through the mud.

It has 10 hours of gameplay and and 10 hours of cutscene. MGS4 has more gameplay than most games nowadays. Do your research before stating stuff.

I don't own a PS3, and i have never played MGS 4, but i heard it was supposed to have at least 70 hours of gameplay? It's one of the only reasons i find the console interesting, really, since it's rare for a game to have more than 10-20 hours of gameplay.

Started ok, rose to greatest on chapter 3, went down hill from there.

Honestly, those saying it's the greatest gaming experiance ever need to play more games, I'm not bashing your opinion so much but..it had like 3-5 top hours of gameplay, total. Was an OK game, amazing if you enjoy watching cut scenes.

stappy

The gameplay was suppose to be 10 - 20 hours, but that includes cut scenes, I finished it in around 14 hours with about 4 hours of actual gameplay. Still a great game though, I'm not taking anything away from it.

I was actually surprised at MGS4's greatness. I've always "liked" the MGS series, but never really "loved" the games.

MGS4 is easily one of my favorite games of all time.

I was a little disappointed. The gameplay, graphics and audio were all excellent but the story was kind of weak in places. I think Mr Kojima simply tried to do too much and make a game to please everybody. I think (SPOILERS) the story would have had more emotional weight if Raiden and Snake both died. IMO Raiden should have died when Arsenal crushed him. It would've been really symbolic - like his past had finally caught up with him.

I were also dissapointed with MGS4, but that's because I haven't played the other Metal Gear games. I just couldn't get into the story and I thought the gameplay wasn't stealthy enough.Cyberfairy

you made one of the worst gaming mistakes ever

Not me man. I was completely blown away.

Probably the best game I have ever experienced.

Also I finished the game in 19 hours I believe, including cutscenes, i'm 100% not sure how people think MGS4 is a short game on your first play through. You can run through the game lightning fast in your 2nd and 3rd playthrough, but the first is the meat of the experience.

Not me. I thought MGS4 was a masterpiece. It was like other MGS but with better control, and even more options on how to play it. Stll, my favorite is the first MGS.

I loved the game, I been playing MGS games since the original MGS on PS, the only difference in this game is that I didn't enjoyed the game play as much as the others, I found myself at times just running through just to get to the next cut scene, unlike all the other MSG games the boss battles were weak in this one (story wise as well). But overall I loved the game cuz it tied everything together and I admit I didn't want it to end.
