I liked FFXIII more then XII.

If you're going to play it, play it in short bursts.
The pacing/tension control was just poor with no time to settle down or explore the world of Cocoon. Even during the game's 'calmer' chapters e.g Sunleth Waterscape, you'll encounter many enemies with few story intermissions throughout, making progression feel like a chore.
FF13>>>>>>>>>>>>>FF12
FFXIII was a damn good game. One of my favorite combat systeems, amazing graphics and music, flawed but still pretty good story with great characters and some emotional moments and a great concept.
FFXIII is nowhere near the best FF, and nowhere near the worst. After the abomination that is FFX-2 AKA charlie's angel rip-off and the disappointment that is FFXII aka blandfest, FFXIII felt like a nice step in the right direction.
Also many FF's are linear, so linearity is not something that is exclusive to FFXIII. If anything FFXIII's linearity was actually pretty fitting for the game. Your group of characters are l'cie, beings who are hated and hunted by those in Cocoon, so therefore they have to constantly be on the run so cocoon's armies doesn't catch up to them; they can't just screw around in a town or go backwards back to a previous location, or else hey would be caught and therefore screwed.
I really enjoyed it, completely worth a full price purchase. The story is decent, some of the characters are very good and the battle system and graphics are incredible.
I honestly don't get the hate for Vanille. I thought she was rather endearing and the one ray of sunshine (Snow as well kinda) in the earlier chapters until Lightning and the rest decided to stop feeling sorry for themselves. She especially matures later on when we realize a bit more about her past. Hope was infinitely more annoying with how many chances he had to talk to Snow and still wouldn't say anything. He grew up later on (later than Vanille IMO). By the end there wasn't a character I didn't like in some way. Sazh was a BAMFSaxsoon
I wasn't really crazy about Vanille either, but she really wasn't any worse than say, Yuffie/Selphie/Rikku/Penelo. Atleast there was actually somewhat of a reason behind her bubbly nature...
And saying Hope is emo is a bit silly. He actually had some legit reasons for being depressed, and he gets over it and probably becomes the most optimistic member by the end of the game; hence the multiple motivational speeches he gave.
And yes, Sazh is awesome.
the combat is extremely boring and easy.....its got almost no depth....but it does have the typical whiney b**** "hope"....

im not talking about skill and if you need to talk about skill in an rpg? please its a freaking single player game, im talking the way the combat system worked it was actually enjoyable, sometimes auto attack was best but it wasn't perfect and you did have to choose your attacks in alot of battles. the combat system almost made it feel more like an action rpg if anything. it took less skill? sure but it was a crapload more fun (skill in a single player game Lawl)Sure is hyperbole in here. Some of the posts are ridiculous.
Anyways OP, to answer your question, I'd say FF XIII would be very much up your alley with that price and how different it is from FF XII. The game starts off slow, but once you get to the later portions, it gets REALLY good.
The combat system is the shining jewel of the game in my opinion, ranking only behind the Junction/Draw system of Final Fantasy VIII. Creating paradigm decks and constantly switching as needed is very fun.
Take the dive and buy the game.
Edit:
If you never played a FF game in your life, is FF13 a good start and noob friendly?
gago-gago
Yes very much so. The game does a good job of introducing the battle system to you in multiple portions so you aren't overwhelmed at once. If I had to choose one in the series to start off with, it'd be this or Final Fantasy VII as the materia system isn't complicated by any means.

The combat is not the best in the series you run into monster's see them on screen like in FF12 then you go into battle mode can only control one character
YOU CANT move around in combat like in ff12 but it looks like you can everyone tells me are you moving are you doing that im like no this game plays itself
2 of the characters you don't do a thing with and the one character you can spam moves with and the choices are not is in depth as previous ff games
how is that the best gameplay the best in the series when you only control one character, you can't move around in combat like the last FF which tht one was horrible, and it play nothing like the early FF's with random combat and turns did you even play FFX game was amazing you could summon a aeon it would take up the whole screen it played like an FF had always played but insane graphics an was what FF should be
this one's combat is worse then FF12 IMO much easier and 12's was the worst combat in the series both of these games pretty much auto fight more then any other ff an the combat is misleading cuz it looks like you can move around in battle but you can't which is very ODD
I hated it... There is nothing to do.. And i mean NOTHING, besides battle and watch cutscenes... I dont play RPGS to constantly battle. Give me more things to do, places to explore... or atleast give me the illusion that these places are bigger than they really are jesus. You just walk down hallways, thats it. Everything is just a hallway. Open it up atleast a little bit. It felt like you might as well have been on rails. There was almost no reason to even give control to the player it was so linear.
FFXIII is a great game. It has problems and lacks unified direction but overall, it still stands as a better game.
Ive heard alot of people stating they hate the voice overs. Then i reccommend getting the Chinese version (has Japanese voices with English subs). From what ive heard of the English, the Japanese voice work is significantly better.
it's garbage.
try resonance of fate if you want a competent console jrpg.

Meh I liked FFXIII MUCH more than RoF, which was just boring to me.
FFXIII I felt had fun combat, likable characters, an intriguing story, awesome music and graphics, etc. It certainly wasn't easy either. Easily one of the hardest in the series later on in the game. I understand if people don't like it but to say its garbage? Come on. Its a well made game and if you don't how it is thats ok but realize that a lot of people do and for good reason. I will say that it was very linear (no more than lots of JPRGs though, it just didn't disguise that very well..), and very anime so if you aren't into that sort of thing I can see why it wouldn't be enjoyable. The cutscenes, imo, were one of the strongest aspects of the game for me and I couldn't wait to keep seeing more.
At the end of the day, I'd say FFXIII ranks up fairly high in my list of favorite FF games, probably around 5th and I have played all of them.
Asa RPG newcomer, FF13 was a bit of a mixed bag. I loved the battle systems, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the leveling system, and the cast was either hit(Lightning, Sazh, Fang) or miss(Snow, Vanielle, and Hope early on).
I thought it was alright. FFXIII's combat system is one of my favorites in the series. For the first two chapters, all you do is press x to win, but the system opened up in Chapter 3 - this is where I started to like it. There's a nice little amount of strategy involved with choosing the appropriate paragridms. The leveling up system was alright, just needs more options. It's better than the Sphere Grid though, which isn't saying much I suppose since the Sphere Grid wasn't good. My only complaint in the gameplay is that it's very linear. The whole game, except for one part, is just a hallway. This is a huge step-down from FFXII.
As for the story, I felt it dragged on. It had its moments, but there were a lot of times where I lost interest because nothing interesting happened. The characters were nice, except for Vanille and her voice certainly doesn't help. The presentation was top-notch: superb soundtrack, great visuals and the cutscenes are pretty awesome. The opening cutscene was well-done.
My biggest complaint about FFXIII is that there's nothing to do other than battles. There are no new places to explore, or any interesting side-quests. The side missions are just battles. That's it.
While I've not played a FF since 8 (and never finished any one of them). I enjoyed 13 (even finished it) more than Assassin's Creed 2 (which I did also enjoy quite a lot). The whole thing was just... fun! The visuals was, in my opinion, up there with uncharted 2, and I think that somehow kept me intrigued. The combat was quite innovative, in the way that it's sort of evolved from the old ATB style combat to something that puts a greater emphasis on tactics, and the combat looked awesome.
From an objective point of view, it was cringy, like very cringy, Vanille was particularly cringy, and Hope was also definitely up there with the cringiness. It was bleeding linear, and absolutely no towns at all, so the only real "break" you get is at around Chapter 10 out of 13. The story... the story was confusing at first, and only less confusing and more boring afterwards, and *not really a spoiler, but still
no shocking plot twists... boohoo
sometimes it was absurdly easy, I didn't even want to use any pre-battle buffs because I'd just step on bosses like peas.
Looking back, I still really loved the time playing it. I suppose it's just one of those things you either love or hate.

It doesn't matter if you can run around or control multiple characters in FFXII, because it didn't amount to anything. It's just a nice feature, nothing more. Most enemies in FFXII were tackled by running up to an enemy and pressing attack, and then watching your characters deliver 3 or for attacks before it fell and moving on. Combat was so streamlined it was practically there just for show.
With FFXIII you have to least pay attention to paradigms, know when to change them, balance healing the heavy damage that enemies deal and trying to stagger them, and if you're not wanting to ruin your own game experience, select your own string of attacks. It's just so much more involved and requires more out of the player.
I miss overworlds :( One thing that really is pretty good, but never gets any credit in XIII is the dialougue. Since RPGs all started to use voice acting (westerns too) I feel the writing quality has dipped across the board. Sure, at times it's real cheese - but compared to most modern RPGs I feel it more than holds it's own.IMO it was just okish. Past ff tittles were a lot more deeper and had, god forbids, overworlds!!

As and old school player of the Final Fantasy franchise (been playing since the first one of the NES), I can honestly say I absolutely adore this game. It's right up there with 7 with me as far as overall fun factor. However, Squee-nicks will never top those SNES FF's, those titles are absolutely phenominal.
PS: FF's 8, 9, 10 (and 10-2), 11, and 12 were complete garbage imo.
FFIX and FFXII completely trash XIII....In fact FFIX is what Final Fantasy should be. Not the J-Pop crap it is now.How is FFXIII "j-pop?"

This is just how people complain about JRPGs. You'll also see people complaining that FFXIII has a spikey haired androgynous (male) hero.
