Halo came out around 2001 it had drop ships landing with tons of enemy troops shooting at u an they looked really good

3 years later half life 2 came out

the drop ships in it looked really bad an didn't fight very well the AI was really horrible for a FPS an the ai was real bad too an very easy to kill

i struggle very hard on the harder levels of halo on higher difficulty setting i think the ai was smarter then its 3 year future fps like half life 2

an the drop ships looked better an felt mroe fit into scenery then half life 2

what ug uys think who have played both?

thats just how i see it a game that comes out 3 years later should beat a game that came out in 2001 in every area shouldn it?

So scenery and dropships make Halo the better FPS? I quite liked HL2's backdrop.

This seems more of a subjective thing, in the way of an artstyle preference.

Half Life 2 looks significantly better than Halo CE in almost every regard, even if we´re comparing it to the PC version of CE.

Maybe your opinion isn't shared by others. Technically, it could be considerably better with graphics and what not. I wouldn't know, I've played neither for an extended period because FPSs are bad games imo. Your opinion is still your opinion though.

But Half Life 2 did beat Halo:CC in everyway, IMO. I don't think it was that hard because Halo is a massively overated and overhyped game, almost as bad as Half Life 2 imo. There were many other games that did way better than Halo during it's time/after it released too, such as Operation Flashpoint, Arma, and Joint Ops. I could list more...

Huge TV in 2001? Rear projection 4:3 TV or one of those 200lbs tube CRTs?

I still think Perfect Dark is WAAAY ahead of its time and if it was fixed up for today (framerate and controls and such) it would be amazing. The weapon selection is still unmatched.

I dislike Halo, but respect what it did for consoles. At the time it had great graphics, and revolutionary multiplayer.

It also was the game that kept an entire console afloat. A very impressive feat.

I also agree on HL2. It was a very boring FPS. Horrible gunplay, stupid AI, bad vehicle controls, and a cheesy nichy scifi plot.

And the characters, my goodness I've seen more character and life in zombies.

What does Halo CE on the xbox on the multiplayer front better than Goldeneye(N64)other than possibly having more mp game modes? How was it revolutionary?

There's no reason to believe that, so nah. Don't get me wrong. It was good for its time, just not worthy of the trait of being ahead of its time.

Hmmm,I can´t think of another FPS on consoles with vehicles before CE,but even then, would it be labeled as revolutionary because of that?

Can anyone please tell me what they see in Halo: CE? Because all I saw was boring repetitive levels, cookie cutter plot, unbalanced multiplayer, repetitive action.

It's concepts and design were very original. Nothing on any platform had done shooting quite like it. It combined all of the right elements of past FPSs together and added it's own gameplay twists.

Sure we have seen games like Halo CE before, but only in bits and pieces. Halo brought in a tactical nature to its gameplay in a few forms. The most obvious is the level design. Yes it was linear, yet it featured a lot of open ground and variations in the height that weren't just catwalks, bridges, or cliffs. Rolling hills, rocks, and trees were all very useful in cover. The next thing was the AI. We had seen good AI before (Half-Life comes to mind), but Halo really embraced the variations of AI and introduced the idea of the squad based AI, with a defined leader and each member in it's own little role. This AI not only varied in their appearance and their combat, they varied in their approaches to each situation. Every single encounter felt fresh (Flood levels excluded of course) by making every firefight keep its tactical nature by making the player use their surroundings more than just superior firepower.

You add in a very decent story, awesome, no-compromise co-op, some excellent features such as only being able to carry 2 weapons, a grenade throw button, regenerating health, and a nice checkpoint system, and you got yourself a shooter that nearly every other shooter since has tried to emulate in some way.

Playing Halo CE now the only real problem with the whole thing lies with its graphics. It feels like a modern shooter. Everything from the gunplay to the controls. The controls are so much more fluid than in previous console FPSs which come off as extremely stiff (go back and play Medal Of Honor Frontlines to see what I mean. It's freaken night and day) yet still give you accuracy and precision that felt natural. If the graphics were updated to HD and maybe the camera had a little bob to it to make it feel more "modern", you would still think it's a great FPS that offers tons of exciting gameplay. Maybe it wouldn't feel so original today as many shooters have tried to emulate Halo but you would still have a fun time.

Of course you could attack it with saying it didn't do anything new. If that is the case, gaming hasn't changed since the late 90s.

Even back in 2001 before every shooter tried to emulate Halo?

See it's easy today to say it was boring and repetitive because so many shooters play like Halo CE. It isn't one of the most highly acclaimed games ever made for no reason.

People on a forum in 2010 saying it was boring and repetitive still can't change the industry wise praise the game got when it came out in 2001.

Agreed. But for the most part it's all subjective. I liked Halo CE more than HL 1 or 2. But not by much. As a series, I love them both.

Surprisingly I actually prefer the Halo Series. I love HL but have just enjoyed Halo much more (though I haven't read the books).

Still, trying to decipher TC's ramblings is difficult :P

I don't think Metroid prime actualy did anything new storytelling wise or even raised the bar in this area.

Anyway, I didn't mean envioremental storytelling. What Half-life 2 did was to raise the bar in how the interactive cut-scenes played, how the virtual actors bahaved in them etc. It's actualy far more meaningful in Episodes 1-2, but the trend started with Half-life 2. And the sad this is, majority of modern FPSes still haven't matched that.

All those shots were representative of their respective product. Just stop this asinine posting habit, as it's just downright sad at this point.

Halo looks awful compared to Half-Life 2. This has been proven, you are wrong, get over it.

Edit: As the posters above pointed out... Epic ****ing lol at using Halo Reach dropships  This thread is now just outright hilarious.

first off, did you REALLY just imply that halo came out with that style of ship?

Secondly, please explain the similarities between the two.

Halo wasn't ahead of it's time, at least gameplay wise compared to other 2001 FPSes. It was however better graphicaly than any 2001 FPS. On the other hand, Half-life 2 really raised the bar when it comes to ingame storytelling.

AdrianWerner

uh raised the bar? wasn't a lot of that stuff from a story telling standpoint they already pulled off in stuff like Half Life 1 and later Metroid Prime(with it's environmental storytelling)?

I don't think Metroid prime actualy did anything new storytelling wise or even raised the bar in this area.

Anyway, I didn't mean envioremental storytelling. What Half-life 2 did was to raise the bar in how the interactive cut-scenes played, how the virtual actors bahaved in them etc. It's actualy far more meaningful in Episodes 1-2, but the trend started with Half-life 2. And the sad this is, majority of modern FPSes still haven't matched that.

But a lot of the structure was already set up in Half Life 1 in terms of how it's told. IE how the cutscenes are mostly interactive. Outside of that you can only really credit the story telling for cleaning up with better tech(IE better facial animations, character models, and character animations in general)
