Ever since Skyrim was anounced, theres been a lot of hate for Oblivion. Many people were saying that Morrowind is better than Oblivion in almost every way. But how? Oblivion was my first ES game and I loved it, spent hundreds of hours in it doing all the quests finding all the artifacts, and exploring the area. It did have flaws, animations were weak, story was mediocre, stats system was too complex, character models and voice acting were bad, but Morrowind had its flaws too. It's stat system was too complex, the combat was just plain horrible, the UI could have been better, and your character's strength seems to rely too much on your equipment.

I'm not saying that either game is bad, if these minor flaws get in the way, your missing the point in playing ES games. I'm just saying that Oblivion was a great sequel to Morrowind, and that it is not nearly as bad as people make it.

Oblivion is awesome. It had it's flaws(the story wasn't good, the level scaling was stupid as hell, the voice acting is laughable at best and cringe-worthy at worst), but it was still a fine game. People just like to give it crap because it wasn't Morrowind 2, just like there were people that gave Morrowind crap for not being Daggerfall 2.

I have never played a elder scrolls game except for oblivion. What I got from the experience was cookie cutter world design with horrible voice acting, a terrible story, silly levelling system and a dull lifeless world. I honestly don't understand what was so 'good' about it.

Oblivion was fantastic. A lot of people hated the scaling enemies, but it wasn't an issue if you knew how to level to outpace them.

Exactly, and I'm glad it wasn't Morrowind 2. There's been too many rehashes this generation, Bethesda is one of the few mising it up, and actually making their games distinguishable from each other.

It only gets hate for the level scaling, I don't think anyone would ever consider one of the most influential and popular games this generation to be "bad".

There's very little sense of progression because of the dumb scaling system. I thought it was pretty awesome once modded however.

Well From what I get, Oblivion isn't bad. (it got Game of the Year for cryin' out loud.) Just when comparing it to Skyrim (or Morrorwind for that matter), It's probably the worst out of the 3.

But From what I get it's not THAT bad of a Game, people still loved it and I'm pretty sure I would too if I would play it a bit lol.

Level scaling was really the only thing I hated about oblivion, it made me not want to level up which is dumb for a rpg.

Level scaling basically ruined the game. Also combat system was dull. Both Morrowind and Skyrim (and even Daggerfall) are better.

See this is my problem with oblivion whenever you bring up gripes with leveling, world design, voice acting, story and all the other problems Oblivion has you always get a cop out response. All I have heard people who love Oblivion say is 'I like it' 'people only hate it because Leveling/they want to be cool' I have yet to see anyone stand up for this game and list exactly what it did well. Its always some vague generic praise. Which is funny because thats exactly what the game feels like.

Oblivions stats system was to complex?!O.o o.O I... what... you... how? Brain... melting =/. Oblivion have alot of flaws more so then Morrowind, First of all the story is bad, the animations are horrible the models... yeah.... Bad voice acting, copy pasted dungeons / areas with large generated terrain with close to nothing in them (side effect of not being hand crafted). Also people seem to not understand how morrowinds combat system works. Its simple... Its a rpg in first person. Its your character that determent how good your character is at something. You cant just pick up a axe and be a god at it like in oblivion / skyrim your character needs to learn how to use it. Not saying it was a perfect system... The stats system was built in a way that was sadly abit bad and it got moved over to oblivion. In skyrim they removed it because they were to lazy to take the 30min required to think of a way to fix it so they went all "action / adventure" game instead. Also... Bad ui... in Morrowind? I know its not perfect but oblivion and skyrim are the definitions of bad ui's up there with Fable 3 and a few older games.

It's a heavily flawed game and RPG (such as lack of unique areas, level scaling and voice acting) but at its heart it's a very fun game.

Oh yeah and being an errand boy sucked in comparison to Morrowind where you learnt about the culture of the people, their legends and prophecies.

One problem I have is how thin its spread. Its the same issue I had with GTA San Andreas, in that there is a lot to do, but none of it excels. The combat is kinda boring, the dialogue is average, voice acting is recycled heavily, the story is passable and the world just doesn't feel too alive. At the very least, Fallout 3 was WAY better (having more voice actors and a better story), and the dead feeling world makes sense in a post apocalyptic wasteland.

Well I put 90 hours into the game over several characters and I can't stomach a second more.

Broken level scaling.

Ugly uninspired wilderness that feels very artificial.

about 3 voice actors for the whole game (still a problem in Skyrim actually)

Nightmarish lifeless conversation animations.

The getting-someone-to-like-you-wheel is pure crap.

Terrible main story with one of the lamest final bosses I've seen in a game.

Fast travel defeats all sense of scale and exploration.

copy/paste dungeon structure.

Seriously, level scaling. Do you know how pointless it feels to get up to level 40 with all the best gear in the game, and you go into a dungeon of lowly bandits, and they all have the exact same gear on?

I enjoyed myself while it lasted but it's aged very poorly. It's a game that I couldn't possibly get back into, especially now that Skyrim is out and trumps it in basically every way.

I don't think Fallout 3 is that bad. I've played like 15 hours or so and I've only found a few things bad about it. The boring nearly pointless intro, it's way too easy even on very hard, the graphics are pretty bad, story is bad, and I don't like how it zooms into characters faces for dialogue. Most of those can probably be fixed with mods, so I don't get what's so bad about it.

When looking at this post, I think it's bad you're literally saying other people should do Bethesda's job and fix the game; the same game that won the most GOTY's of '08. Still a really good game as a whole imo (mid 7's).

Oh well I'm playing through it mostly vanilla at first and am finding it pretty enjoyable. And the community is really strong with bethesda games, so it's not unreasonable to assume there will be mods to fix these things. You're definitely right that they should've fixed a lot of those things themselves however.

The problem was that if you didn't knew how to level up the game could become broken because the level scalling would make all enemies reach your level and in the worst cases surpass you.

Then the small stuff was bugfest at release. Just like 6 voice actors. Many copy-pasted caves and dungeons. Main story wasn't epic and kinda short.

Vanilla Oblivion was like Skyrim - full of bugs and glitches. Oblivion was vastly improved after I installed 70 mods, and all of the bugs were gone as a result.

I played Oblivion first, then played Morrowind because I loved Oblivion so much. I didn't like it one bit. I thought it was really bad. I love Oblivion, and I love Skyrim either more. Bethesda makes some of the best true exploration games. Where you really can go anywhere you want whenever you want and if you want, could get tons and tons of gameplaywithout even playing the story mode

Oblivion was a really bad game. And I installed a bunch of well-known mods that supposedly "fixed" it. It was boring has hell, NPCs had nothing interesting to say, the story was bland, the quests were a chore, all the dungeons were the same, the combat was hideous, it was a completely pointless game. And that's why I won't touch Skyrim or any other Bethesda game for that matter, I don't care how great people say it is. I have far better games to occupy the few hours a week I can dedicate to gaming, such as BF3.

It was an absolutely fantastic game when it released, but it hasn't aged well at all, even Morrowind, with a few graphics mods, seems like it's aged far better than Oblivion has, it just feels... archaic to play now. There are other problems - they only managed to hire 1 decent voice actor, who happened to be Jean-Luc Picard, and then killed him off within the first half hour of the game, and thus the voice acting is a bit stupid at times, the main story was a bit bland and frankly surpassed by far in quality by the guild questlines, the level scaling really doesn't make much sense and makes it so easy to break the game, but, by late 2006 standards, the amount of content and general scope of the game was unlike, well, anything, it was brilliant. Morrowind and Skyrim are better, mind you, but those saying that it was that bad, for it's time, are either grossly exaggerating or mistaken.
