Glad it's releasing on consoles, but it's just coming at a bad time, very competitive window from now until the end of the year. I hope it does well.

Since the console release was staggered, I assume the success threshold (for the publisher/developer) is relatively modest as they'd of probably planned a bigger more unified multiplatform release from the start if they wanted bigger results. I think it probably helped a great deal pandering to PC crowd first so they don't cry about casualization of the game, kind of like Dirt did too. So, they have that going for them.

I wouldn't be bumping a topic, though as this is a joint top on google search (when you type in xcom2 sales) i feel it's worthwhile to provide some additional information.

Xcom 2 sales (starting sales) that were over 800k is very good news which was 5 months ago, and on average the dev team isn't much bigger then civilization team, in relation to AAA game developers Firaxis is one of the smallest, it certainly does not have a marketing budget into the millions like GTA, Halo etc. Some people need to keep that in mind.

The fact it's on console is a reflection they are doing well, their prepared to take a shot on a market that will never match their PC sales, but they feel they can make a sufficient amount to warrant a profit to go back to it.

The game is by no means on a limp, 800k of sales on opening week would have been due to pre-sales and buying on the day so look it as

800k x $40 = 32m

800k x $60 = 48m

We have other costs to take into account of course but over the six months of the year they have done quite well, but we'll need to wait till we get more figures in the next quarter to get a clearer picture.

One point given to me was that XCOM 2012 was restarted a few times, so part of EU's track record as recouping on an eight to ten-year investment.

It's very good news overall and a is a bigger seller then many games of it's type, if it was a sport game or big dev team like GTA then yes this would be a failure, but all in all it's doing very well, the next question really is can it make that more of a profit on consoles?

The effect is reduced over time. If a free weekend was over a year ago, it isn't even accounting for 100k, and is so minor that it is practically negligible considering the Steamspy margin of error.

Xcom had multiple sales since mid 2015... and a big sale just before Xcom 2's release... I remember it taking top spot multiple times on the top sellers above games like CS:GO and GTA V which are always in the top 5. The same could happen to Xcom 2. Xcom sold more because of it's lifetime. Xcom 2 WILL sell more.

It's a great game, shame is has zero replayability value partly due to the poor optimisation> I still keep hoping for a proper UFO/Xcom sequel, one day maybe.

When it comes to sales, probably. Its not quite a popular genre. Many people get turned off with turn-based mechanics (me included) despite the game's quality, wich I'm sure its pretty good for those who like this type of games.

I appreciate the update but this is too old a topic (and a bait thread) to bump.
