CNN bases its gloomy diagnosis on Sony's sales plunge of 19 points, compared to sales in November 2007. That's a fair criticism, but it isolates a superficially negative statistic while ignoring the fact that this November only included two days of post-holiday sales (11/28 - 11/29) compared to last year's eight total (11/23 - 11/30). I'm speculating here, but if you could adjust for that difference, it's very likely PS3 sales would have increased, however slightly, year-over-year.

That whole argument is rediculous. The 360 sold nearly twice as many units in November that they did last year and the Wii sold just about twice as many as well. When you take that into account their critism is completely legitimate. If the number of days was the cause for the decrease in sales then it should have effected the 360 and Wii as well.

[QUOTE="HuusAsking"][QUOTE="delta3074"]the ps3 is not a sinking ship, but it will come last this gen unless SONY take a big hit to bring the price downnervmeister
They can't afford to. They're still losing money for each PS3 sold, and their attach rate is too low to make up the difference if they drop the price further. IOW, Sony would end up turning the PS3 into a money sink. Furthermore, the price gap has become too great. The 360 Arcade is half the cheapest PS3's price (and the cheapest PS3 is not backward compatible--at least the cheapest 360 can be upgraded), and the 360 has hit the vaunted $200 commodity mark. Any attempt to play price catch up by Sony would be business suicide.

Doesn't Sony plan on putting in cheaper components in their next batch of PS3's by march next year?

Indeed, and they hope to be in the black with this move, but Microsoft's continual price pressure puts Sony in a bind. The cheapest PS3 is too much more expensive, to the point that about the only cut that would allow them to keep up could put them back in the red.

[QUOTE="hopesfall2own"]lol people take this article serious? Please, when they have to use "Playstation brand, including PSP and PS2" to justify it outselling JUST the 360, how can anyone take it serious? Oh wait, cause cows do the same thing, no wonder they agree with someone using 3 systems against 1. Nice try but that article is a joke.hopesfall2own

you do know that the psp alone has sold over 40 mil right? :|

And why should I care? We are talking about the ps3 not the psp nor the "playstation" brand. Why don't we use the Microsoft Brand vs Sony Brand while we are at it

You might aswell, neither are having great success right now what with Vista an all.

That is referring to households equipped to received digital broadcasts. My son whom I have kept in the SD tube dark ages (poor lil' bugger) has a digital cable box...he is equipped to receive digital signal without an HDTV. But you make me wonder how many homes have an HDTV...I'm sure some # data is out there somewhere.

Thanks. Ok so 30 Million homes (Nielsen estimates) have an HDTV. It could lend some credibility to why HD formats - like BR aren't just flying off the shelves....hence another potential contributor to the slow sales of the PS3...which does have the perception of still being the best BR player on the market.

While I am a big fan of CNN, I do think they were wrong in calling the PlayStation 3 a sinking ship. I'm surprise the Washington Post didn't add LittleBigPlanet to the list of exclusives. The PS3 has the games. The PS3 has the features. The PS3 has the stable, and successful online service (PSN today is 100x better than PSN last year. It has grown a lot). PS3 is not a sinking ship. Sony can't afford to lower the price due to hardware costs, not that they're just trying to piss you off.

Couple Questions. Is momentum on their side? Is it too little too late? They may have grown the library. They may have improved the quality of their online services model. But has the damage been done? Ahh...to have a crystal ball....

Some would say Sony's late to the party since we're more than halfway through the generation and most of those who had some money to commit would have already committed (and among those, many can only afford one console).

I just read this for the first time. Nice analysis of the situation. I don't think Sony or the PS3 is a sinking ship. They'll react to their situation and bounce back positively.

lets hope they do that fast since the Playstation brand is extremely important to Sony.... also as a gamer its always good news knowing its doing good since it will attract devs to invest & develop games for it...

Thats some mighty fine ownage done by The Washington Post, nice to see a much more leveled fair analysis then that crap CNN was talking about especially the game part, I felt like that part was written by an angry fanboy.

just remember, we do things different in Canada. hard left in the US is like our middle, or right. we're far more liberal - so to you it might look right wing, but it's ******* not at all.

CNN is bipartisan for the most part. Fox is conservative. And MSNBC is liberal. Even if CNN may employ more liberals, their approach to the news is moderate. They try not to show any sway. Having partisan and bipartisan panels during debates is another thing the do that other networks don't. MSNBC is the best though :P.

So we don't stray from the subject, to use the metaphor of the topic's title, perhaps Sony's ship isn't sinking due to the weight of the PS3, but it's noticably taking on water.

do some research. find me a more liberal news network in the US :) bipartisan, lol. i'm liberal, so don't get me wrong. i'm not trying to attack CNN, i just watch enough of it to know they AREN'T bipartisan.

having 1-2 rep pundits does not make you bipartisan. even FOX has a couple liberal anchors. CNN would love you to think they're middle of the road, but in the grand scheme of things they are very left of the US center.

msnbc comes close, but imo they're about the same ;)

i quit reading when you brought up the playstation brand stuff. you know sonydefenseforce.com is just a joke right?

its dumb to believe what cnn or wash post says about gaming. everybody knows that this isn't a good time for ps3. maybe it'll take off next year if it gets below 300 but even that price hasn't been the traditional mass market line (199). i don't know....

I'm liberal too, but I think you ignored some of my post. I watch MSNBC and CNN everyday, so I don't need research. CNN may be liberal but their image to the casual news demographic is middle of the road. Their portrayal and delivery is very bipartisan, regardless of their political affiliations. Lou Dobbs is the ultimate of bipartisan hosts since he's independent, Anderson cooper is a robot, and Larry King is a old dude who's seen everything, so he doesn't care lol.

In America, CNN is probably the closets we'll get to non-bias presentation. Every network has their token partisans to balance things out (Joe Scarborough/Alan Colmes), but CNN takes the most effort in keeping the debates and info fair. No other network has bipartisan and partisan round-table debates.

http://www.buzzdash.com/index.php?page=buzzbite&BB_id=132715&C_id=3&listType=category&buzzbitesSort=date_d&back_url=%2Findex.php%3Fpage%3Dcategory%26C_id%3D3%23buzzbites-list

That's just a small sample though. NBC is by far the most liberal network.

its so weird hearing people give their left / center / right affiliations in the USA - because the rest of the world has to translate it. in Canada your left is our middle, your right is 'holy ****, this is scary'. funny how the left / center / right changes based on where you live, i.e. relative to your country and it's stance on certain issues. to add an anecdote - for the longest time I thought CNN was uber right-wing because we don't get Fox unless you pay for it in Canada (thank god). when someone told me CNN was liberal I nearly had a heart attack. scary stuff.

Just wondering if anyone noticed with this would CNN thing. CNN does publish articles from other blogs and news sites. In the case of the plummeting PS3 sales article it was take from alleyinsider

The author if you look at his other articles does seem to have a little bit of anti sony bias

[QUOTE="TheGrat1"]The thing I want to know is: Wold CNN have dared to call PS3 a sinking ship earlier in the year when it was outselling 360?3picuri3
what a silly question. don't you already have the answer? did they call it a sinking ship then? my word....

*sigh* Look past the words and into the implied meaning of the statement. By keeping quiet earlier in the year and then suddenly declaring PS3 a sinking ship because sales went down from last year in a few months exposes such a claim as a sensational and unnecassary overreaction. -_-

no - it's news directly relating to the NPD reports. why the hell do you think there's some sort of conspiracy here and that there's a possibility CNN are a bunch of fanboys that just report to annoy cows? seriously. i can see your implied meaning, don't have to dig deep.

let me make it simple:

-sales were okay then, so no they wouldn't report it's sinking

-sales suck now and are down vs. 2007, so report in the money section for investors.

simple stuff.

this is not SENSATIONAL - this is NOT overreaction. take a look at the Sony stock performance over the past couple of weeks - tell me people wouldn't have been harping on CNN for not mentioning Sony's stock being re-categorized as 'underperform' while they all lose their money. it's NEWS. it has FINANCIAL IMPACT that AFFECTS PEOPLES INVESTMENTS.

so tired of cows trying to spin this in to some global media conspiracy of sensationalism and exaggeration. the only people exaggerating around here are the cows.

maybe next time you should look past the news story and see what is actually happening to sonys 'financials'.

you really have to take a step back and read the articles. you clearly aren't understanding a) what the article was implying, and b) what the story was about. you keep pulling out things unrelated to the article, YTD had nothing to do with it. read up on Sony's stock okay? read up about the reclassification to 'underperform' and read the NPD sales reports that lead to this article. does a ship have to start sinking at the beginning of the year? do you get the analogy at all? it being a sinking ship implies it was once a ship above water - i.e. pre 2008 holiday season. all you people are doing is blowing an article way out of proportion and giving it far more attention than it deserves.

The author if you look at his other articles does seem to have a little bit of anti sony biasJandurin

Tin hat picture incoming.

Lol. Don't read too much into it. I was just wonder if anyone noticed since everything has been CNN this and CNN that when CNN only republished an article from one of it's affiliates.

nearly all of CNNs bi-line stories are published by affiliates. hence the affiliate credits at the end of articles and on 90% of their news source images. CNN, what does it stand for? is there a 'network' in there somewhere?

Then the reasoning by the person who wrote the article is terrible. I'll consider PS3 a sinking ship when it sells less this year than last year.

great, this article obviously wasn't meant for you as you a) don't seem to grasp the financial implications of the stock downgrade, and why it's important to release a story, and b) you keep thinking this 'sinking ship' statement is something to be taken personally when it's just related to sales. the reasoning was sound. the misinterpretation and exaggeration in SW has been 'terrible'.

what implication does YTD sales have at all? Sony downgraded their forecast, analysts downgraded the stock condition, all have downgraded sales expectations. YTD sales mean jack **** when a console takes a hit on holiday sales when a bump is expected - stocks went down 6% in one day over this news and it's still showing an overall gradual decline so things might get worse.

don't expect people in system wars to have the slightest understanding of economics of any kind. most of them are probably twelve and haven't even taken a basic economics class yet. when you say sony downgraded their forecast, those twelve-year-olds probably think that sony said there will be less rain this quarter.

I will not criticize the article itself, just the implication in its title. The implication "sinking ship" is perhaps a bit oversensational and a bit inaccurate. Describing something as a "sinking ship" implies it has crossed a point of no return and is now in a deadly downward spiral that can only end one way--with the subject in question in Davy Jones' Locker. That is not the case with Sony. They are in a financial bind, but they are also far from out. The proper nautical metaphor to describe Sony's situation is that the good ship Sony is "taking on water". It implies the right thing: that you've got a problem that could either be rectified or could lead to your demise, but the outcome is still far from certain.
