We're half way through 2008. Is the 360 dead yet? (back from E3 08 aftermath)

I'm asking, since we've been hearing about the demise of this platform for... what is it now? Oh yeah, TWO AND A HALF YEARS. Since late 2005, the forcast has been;

* 360 will be dead in 2006 when PS3 launches
* 360 will be dead in 2007 when Motorstorm and Ratchet and any other "killer app" launches
* 360 will be dead in 2008 when things really pick up for PS3
* and on and on we hear about the end of Microsoft's platform

Now I'm not disputing that PS3 is indeed picking up in the games department, I have never once bought into that "PS3 has no games" BS. I never said it's a bad system. And yeah the price is lower nowwhich makes it as accessible as 360 when it launched. This isn't to be a post about how much better 360 is than PS3 or vice versa.

This is about 360's market health. It still has great games coming for 2008. The game footage of Gears 2 have proven that it's not maxed out after just one year.

Which brings us to two and a half years later since the prophesised demise of 360, and so far it's still vital and kicking :) So where do we go from here? Do you cows want to reschedule the end (yet AGAIN) for 2009? Or will you finally LEARN something from these past 2 years???

* note: Now I'm sure someone will bring up PS3 having a AAAA (well deserved I'm sure) which will somehow be that turning point you've been yearning for, to bring about the console wars outcome you've wanted. But really, will just ONE game (no not it's only game, but it's only game above AA), no matter how great it is, bring about the end of a whole platform? Remember how the same was said of other games before that were supposed to "kill the 360".

*EDIT* Now that we're past E3 08, and having seen what all platforms have coming up, especially in light of 360 acquiring Final Fantasy XIII, I'm asking again. Is there anybody who will still proclaim that 360 on it's death bed? Anybody? :)

Oh and to the mods; I realize this thread is somewhat old, about a month. But with the recent E3 blowout (especially the FF13 revelation) I felt this warrented bringing this question back for another round. I hope this will not get me suspended :)

360 is factually selling at a faster rate then it did in 07.

ANd with e3 around the corner, this year is far from over for 360.

The PS3 was also labeled dead at this time last year by many (myself included) and the PS3 is gaining an audience. I doubt the 360 is going to die, but I think we've seen the system at its peak.

A lot of the hyped PS3 exclusives was pushed back into 2009 so the "2008 is the year of the PS3" threads kind of died.JLF1

if u compare the ndps, u will see a difference.

and the march euro price cut has really put 360 08 sales higher then its 07 sales.

There's already a substantially large userbase for 360, whereas PS3 had much less in it's 1st year where it's playing catch-up to 360. And 360 hasn't stopped selling entirely on a month to month basis where it maintains it's lead over PS3. For how long remains to be seen.

And yes, fanboys HAVE been saying 360 would be dead (some even promising this as a guaruntee) in EACH year since 2005.

Hey guys , Microsoft is still making 360s as far as I know and we still got Gears 2 and MGS4 is just one game ....... I am jealous of the ps3 , so I must belittle some cows.

Your looking for logic in a fanboy arguement and only looking at one side. Yes I am sure there have been many fanboys before the PS3 launch taking the EXTREME stance of how the PS3 will kill the 360. But those are few and far between. Not to mention you are turning a blind eye to the most common argument since the PS3s launch which has been that "The PS3 has NO games" and "The PS3 is gonna fail or even be discontinued" and "PS3 sales flop".

So dont call out just one group of fanboys, acknowlege that both 360 fanboys and PS3 fanboys were praising their favorite console to the EXTREME and condemning the console they dislike the most to the EXTREME and avoid getting in the middle.

Its not just PS3 fanboys that are to blame, MS fanboys were far from modest or ignorant and you can easily take the sentence "__________ console is gonna fail" and associate it with all fanboys because all groups are guilty of using this arguement.

Well according to May 2007 NPD the 360 sold 155k units, compared to May 2008 where it has sold 186k.

And I'm fairly sure its been the same case every other month this year, I just couldn't be bothered finding more links.

Maybe someone can find one of them tables of every month since release.

No they are ruining games. Banjo, ruined. Perfect Dark, ruined. Halo 3 ruined the series for me. Online is annoying as hell, because any little kid can go on. The system is just horrible itself, loud, unreliable, bulky.

Yeah, Metal Gear Fever is making the cows delirious. I saw posts that said the PS3 was going to be neck n' neck with the Wii in sales, also that MGS4 had better graphics than Crysis. I understand it's a great game, but come on.

Well according to May 2007 NPD the 360 sold 155k units, compared to May 2008 where it has sold 186k.

I just went to vg and did a comparison, and it is selling better than '07.

Better read my post again :) I DID acknowledge (through my own mention of what I never participated in) the failings of my fellow 360 gamers. I agree that it's ludicrous to bash any platform without any reasoning.

5-10K in NA, the only region the 360 sells well, but overall worldwide it has reached 250-300K more then the 360 and this is during the 1st and 2nd quarter of 08, the SLOWEST time period of the year for gaming sales, what do you think is gonna happen during the holiday seasons, when the PS3s sales spike in three regions and the 360s spike only in one.

Dont you remember 07, the year everyone laughed at the PS3s sales every NPD, laughing at how the GBA outsold it and then what happened at the end of the year. Worldwide the PS3 outsold the 360 by a million and that was the year of Halo, Bioshock and ME, suppossedly "360s year".

Worldwide is what matters.

Games wise, the 360 has a good 08

Sales wise, the 360 continues to sell MORE with the dominant Wii and a stronger PS3 running around

In other words, dont buy Cow BS, its been going on for years...

No they are ruining games. Banjo, ruined. Perfect Dark, ruined. Halo 3 ruined the series for me. Online is annoying as hell, because any little kid can go on. The system is just horrible itself, loud, unreliable, bulky.

Banjo hasn't even come out yet, so what would you know about the game? Halo 3 IS AAA not just here at GS, but across the board (which goes for the entire trilogy for that matter). And for all your complaints of Live, you have completely failed to demonstrate any maturity here.

agreed but think about this, Microsoft is an American Company, and Nintendo and Sony are both Japanese companies so it logically makes sense they would do great over in Japan and other Asian Countries while the 360 does poorly, and with Europe........I actually dont quite understand why they dont do spectacular over there :?

I did read your post and all you did was admit the "PS3 has no games arguement". My point is your spinning this as if the 360 fanboys have only been on the defending end. If you read the entire part of my post you highlighted you would see that it hasnt just been PS3 fanboys claiming the death of the 360 but the other way around as well.

I am sure fanboys have said that just like fanboys have said "PS3 sales flop, PS3 doomed, PS3 has no games, Sony fans dont buy games, PS3DO, etc..". Then 08 hits and people find out that while everyone was laughing at the PS3s NPDs sales data it actually outsold the 360 that year.

Both groups of fanboys have been dooming eachothers consoles, thats just what they do. Its never been one sided.

According to these boards evereything is dying except the PS3, which is aging like fine wine. :roll:

If anything is dying it's Sony's gaming branch, which is losing billions as we speak.

Yes, it's true that there has been bashing and doom-saying on both sides. I never denied that, nor condoned what has been dished out to the PS3. I'm simply focusing on 1 particular issue.
