I think it has been like this for over a decade now. Western devs are all about making new advancements in games and Japanese devs don't do crap. Whether you think that matters or not isn't the point. Look at the latest RDR multiplayer video. You don't see that kind of tech in Japanese titles. Look at Crysis, you would never see that much tech in a Japanese title. I feel that western devs are doing a better job with this, it doesn't seem Japanese devs make it a priority probably because most of them aren't funded well enough.

The impressive techof Crysis is the graphics. AI really isnt anything special. The physics are nice but have been done in other games.

Right. Not just the technology, but game design as well. They're too steeped in tradition to notice that the rest of the world is moving on in terms of how people play games.

They either fail to recognize, or choose to ignore the fact that people other than the Japanese play games. Of course, there are exception to this, but speaking in very general terms, I think there's at least a little truth to it.

I always thought Capcom has been pretty good. Other than that, SE produce good looking games, they do great with the DS (probably the best tech on the DS).

The top games this gen are almost entirely by western devs. A great game compared to another great game is about equal, but a great game with new tech compared to one with old tech is an obvious standout and which would you pick of the two? Games have evolved and gamers are now wanting games with more options and freedom.

Im going to have to disagree , If you want to talk about them as a whole then yes but there are still Japanese companies that push the envelope.

Mainly

Team Kojima, Capcom and SquareEnix.

Capcom has tons of high quality looking titles this gen.

Of course it would.

The same crappy game with amazing AI added would make a difference...even if in the end the game is still overall crappy.

Technology rarely defines a game, but to deny the role it plays in improving video games on a whole is ridiculous.

Can there be good games with poor technology? Of course...but that's besides the point.

fun and challenging because they have a good AI. A easy game that is not challenging does not have a good AI/or good puzzles (depending on what type of genre you're playing)

I am not sure why you would think that. I am sorry but multiplayer options for the MANY MANY FPS this gen. is not pushing technology. This gen. so far has been all about playing it safe and tacking on multiplayer on games. We have been drowned in FPS with single player games taking the sidelines and you think this is something to be proud of?? Japanese arcades have CRAZY games with CRAZY ways of playing them. Games like Guitar Hero existed in Japanese arcades well before they came here to become standard and milked. Some of my most favorite games this gen. have come from Nintendo, Kojima, Capcom, GOW developers, Naughty Dog, Insomniac, etc.. Both Western and Eastern developers have made some amazing games and I am glad that they all have different styles and appeals because it adds to the variety I enjoy in my gaming experience.

Ehh, who cares. I think western devs spend too much time trying to make uninspired replication of the real world with super tech when i would rather have an interesting artstyle.

Oh, and i know that someone would say that there are some that go beyond graphics with that tech, but that is the exception. Certainly not the rule.

Hes talking about technical graphics , an area that is impossible for the Wii to excell t as the hardware is essentially a decade old.

There isnt a market for that in Japan. Japanese developers and publishers rely heavily on their own market which has acute tastes. Fortunately, the PS3 there has just hit 5 million, and is projected to sell between 8-12 million by the time its done, so things are changing.

I don't know what it is about the Japanese, but it seems that if a game doesn't contain a recognisable face they've known for 20-30 years, they'll shun it.

No wonder Nintendo are so huge over there. I think there is a bit of xenophobia involved too. Thank goodness us Westerners are more open-minded to new IP's.

Yeah, that does put things into perspective and is worth bearing in mind. Just because franchises such as Final Fantasy and Soul Calibur are growing stale, doesn't mean other franchises don't have plenty of steam left in them. The lack of new IP's is still irritating though. Even Demon's Souls is considered a part of the King's Field series.

There's plenty of new IPs, it's just that everybody shuns them. Endless Ocean is a new IP, and it's considered too niche. What about No More Heroes or The World Ends with You? Both are new IPs this gen and they're from Japanese developers.

i agree with op for the most part. But not all japanese developer are behind. Capcom for example did a great engine maybe the best after crysis. If you want challenging your rig you should play against the big DX10 worm in LP.

I think it has been like this for over a decade now. Western devs are all about making new advancements in games and Japanese devs don't do crap. Look at Crysis, you would never see that much tech in a Japanese title. Capcom disagrees with you.
