MS did warranties which track that unlike Sony and the PS2 so I'm thinking most had to buy at least 3 PS2's so the actual installed base was around 40 mil. :P
So does that mean the PS2 sales were slightly inflated? walkingdreamProbably to the only difference is that the PS2 main problem was DRE and wasn't 50% or more, and DRE was easy to fix and your PS2 would work again, the 360 has so many problems, that even fix there was no warranty that your unit would keep working after a few months, reason why many had send their 360 4 or 5 times.
Sony was force to fix DRE,and that would have been MS case if they did not implemented the 3 years warranty, they would had been force to fix it,it took them close to 2 years to admit the problems and act accordingly,so it wasn't like they did it on good will.MS did warranties which track that unlike Sony and the PS2 so I'm thinking most had to buy at least 3 PS2's so the actual installed base was around 40 mil. :P

[QUOTE="walkingdream"]So does that mean the PS2 sales were slightly inflated? kuraimenYep, not as much as the 360 though ;)Yeah probably not quite but damn the first PS2s were un realible. I wouldn't put it far off the 360 at all.
[QUOTE="razgriz_101"]No because YLOD was not wide spread. No one i know got that, yet all my friends had 360 hardware problems at least once or twice.units sold = units sold at the end of the day who cares who bought them.We would need to do the same for the PS3 with YLOD aswell would we not?

Pot calls the kettle black.
People will rebuy faulty hardware, or send it to get fixed its stupid to discredit 360 sales because of hardware faults then counter with yeah theres rrod b-b-b-but it isnt as widespread face it hardware problems are hardware problems regardless of how widespread.
It only muddies the sales arguement further as theres no exact data, and how may are rebuys etc to be used as an arguement or even any numbers that are right.
[QUOTE="zmbi_gmr"][QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]Your failure rate experience was 1:1 and yet say one had better hardware.
Do you realize what you're saying?

4 years for this gens hardware is acceptable when considering how hard it was used...1 week is not. I know ppl with launch 60 gigs that are still running fine...however I don't know anyone who's still using their launch 360's.
im still on my first 360 with no issues so i take your word with a grain of salt .I'm glad to hear that you're still on your first 360 with no issues (not intended to sound sarcastic), but this 360 that you're using...is it one of the first 360's released? Oh yeah I'm all out of salt...would you be willing to except some sugar instead?
All companys keep track of warranty repairs afterall it cost them money. Sony has never had to extend the warranty on their products so we know the failure rate never has gotten as bad as msMS did warranties which track that unlike Sony and the PS2 so I'm thinking most had to buy at least 3 PS2's so the actual installed base was around 40 mil. :P

Perhaps but it still confrims buyer confidence that they are willing to buy again even with a system failure.
[QUOTE="KarateeeChop"]This fanboy comment made me laugh. That's what a warranty is for and both ms and sony are a year, is ms going to extend my warranty for free. No I have to pay for it like any other product. Warranty for a 360 is 3 years. o_0but cows keep trying to convince us that the ps3 has a 11% failure rate, which means we should take 6 million away from its sales.
with the 360, on the other hand, you get it fixed for free. unlike sony, ms doesn't force you to buy another console when the old one breaks.
i guess the ps3 is even further behind than we thought. poor sony

You could take maybe 20% off of 360 sales if we would be (:P) reasonable. But they're sales let's not get serious about those.
I had 2 360s and may people i know went through 3-5. Also a bunch just bought slims so they wont have to worry about the rrod. I would say atleast 20 million 360 sales are rrod rebuy related. Which is why there are only about 12 million xbl accountsFirstinstimct
I'm a long time PS supporter. I didn't buy this "rebuy" arguement when people used it against the DRE and PS2 sales and I don't buy it with RROD and the 360. If people are ignorant enough (or so rich) that they go out and buy an entirely new console instead of using their warranty to get it fixed (or just paying a much lower price to get it fixed if no warranty), then those peopleare morons.
And since I don't actually believe people are that dense, I refuse to believe that there are that many out there who did that. I think the vast majority used their warranty. My buddy has a 360 and had 2 RRODs. The first time he used the warranty to get it fixed for free and the second time, after the warranty ran out, he used some of the internet "fixes" to fix it and it has worked ever since.

Depends on the condition and cost, like my psp was in rough shape when the buttons stopped working. So I got a new one for $130 instead of paying sony $80 to fix old one.1. No one knows how high the failure rate is and we likely will never know that number.
2. The PS3 likewise had a poor quality control showing.
3. Microsoft offered an exceptionally good warranty for an electronics product that undoubtedly cut into re-buys. Anecdotally, I had 2 RRoD's and of course, like most people I didn't buy a new console; MS repaired my consoles (actually replaced) at their Texas facility right along the Mexican border just like millions of others. As opposed to my cousin with his PS3's YLoD, which went unreplaced (he has a 360 now, and no PS3).
I'm sure there were re-buys, but whether RRoD coupled with an excellant warranty for most consumers (except early RRoD victims, who may have replaced their console) caused more re-buys than the less pervasive YLoD coupled with a much poorer warranty from Sony is something that will likely forever remain an irrelevant mystery.
And once again let's ignore that free repair warranty, because of course it makes aoooo much more sense that people would spend more cash than to exersise an option that is totally free to them. Yep, every single one of em. I mean sure there are some rebuys out there, but we'll never know that exact number.
Point is these arguments are always built on the assumption that every single RROD case lead to an automatic repurchase.
Oh and while we're at it, PS2 was only marginally in the lead over Xbox and Gamecube. After all, with DRE being quite prevailant and NO free coverage from Sony on that issue, it can only be reasonable that 1/3 of PS2 sales were repurchases. amirite amirite? ;) ;)

I like the way this guy thinks. But logic on these forums is a big no no.
True all consoles get repurchases it's just I've had to rebuy more ms consoles. I bought 3 6th gen xbox's with 3 repairs totaling 6. I've bought 2 psp's with 1 repair for a total of 3. Though 1 of those was my own fault. I sat on the screen breaking it.And once again let's ignore that free repair warranty, because of course it makes aoooo much more sense that people would spend more cash than to exersise an option that is totally free to them. ALL SYSTEM SALES ARE INFLATED!!!! I have actually had to replace more PS2 and PS3's than 360's. Not saying Microsoft's are more inflated. Most folks I know got a used stsem after their systems took a dump or simply traded their PS3 or 360 for a slim model.

I like how the PS2 problems are getting minimalized. Sony had to settle in court because the problems were so bad which is something that Microsoft has not had to do.
Sony settles PS2 cl/ass action law suit-http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/driving/jakx/news/6139482/sony-settles-ps2-cla/ss-action-suit (take out the / in cla/ss)
As far as the PS3 remember there is ylod and many only bought a PS3 for the blu-ray only because it was the cheapest version for a long time.
