That describes Dragon Age Origins quite well. Minus the hardcore RPG part. Compared to many RPGs I have played it was pretty darn casual.
Here is what defines a hardcore rpg for me.

OK, you win this round ;) . But all the various "layers" of attributes to assign - skills, talents and then the crafting on top just got too much for me. I like the core mechanics (and speaking protagonist) of DA2 much better, even if the recycled scenery let the game down overall.
Ah that is ok. Considering the number of simple RPGs today it took many some time getting used to DAO. That said, DAO wasnt casual either, but some games dwarfs it in terms of hardcoreness. Pick any roguelike :).
I would rank DAO as neither a hardcore or casual RPG. Somewhere in the mid, maybe leaning a little bit towards the more casual side due to its lenience. But it was also complicated as you said (convulted one might add), so it would hardly pass as a casual game.
oooohhhh LA Noire is a good one to pick! I was very excited for it but it drove me nuts when i would use a logical piece of evidence and the game would tell me i was wrong. It seemed kind of arbitrary. Blah. masterdanteThis and gta4... if it werent for rdr which was incredible id write off rockstar completely this gen
My biggest disappointment this gen would have to be my house being broken into and my 80Gb PS3 with BC, 10 PS3 games, 2 DS Lites, and 6 DS games were stolen.AmazonTreeBoaHave sony track the serial number... im sure the idiot is playing it online as we speak.
Oh my..
Where to begin..The list doesn't end.Needless to say,they weren't necessarily bad games..just a bit disappointing.

Probably Dragon Age: Origins. The way everyone hyped it up here on the forums, I thought it would be some amazing game. What I played was an rpg that was far too long with severe balance issues. If you have at least two mages, the game is a cakewalk. If you want none, it becomes very difficult. A third of the game was boring, and there were so many cringe worthy lines. The game is not even difficult, second time I played through it on nightmare and died like 5 times.
Anything Nintendo related. They basically do not exist to me anymore.
On the PS3- Insomniac games. I think they are getting worse. PSN exclusives.
Wipeout is far and away my favorite download title but that is all I have cared to buy on the PSN.
God of War 3. Never been a fan and all that game did was make me less of one.
GT5- Time to make horse racing and train simulators Polyphony. You guys got owned.
Exclusives- They have so many good ones I had to start a Gamefly prescription. But in all honesty there are no great ones IMO other than Uncharted 2 and infamous 2. I never played the first infamous so I can't say on that one.
On the 360- XBLA pricing- I am fine paying for gold because they have enough specials throughout the year but the games on demand are more expensive then getting it at the store.
Rare- Kameo was great and I am one of the few people who still likes Perfect Dark Zero because of Spec-ops but they have been hit and miss way to much.
Relationship with publishers- Too many games are not getting patched and very little free content because of Microsoft. Team Fortress 2 could still alive on the 360 today but Microsoft got in the way.
Old franchises are missing- Mech Assault, Crimson Skies, Quantum Redshift, Conker, and Brute Force are all missing. Brute Force I understand....The others could of filled a void missing from the 360's line up.
My biggest disappointments don't have to do with any games, but rather some of the emerging trends becoming more popular in the industry. DLC, Online passes, re-releasing better versions of the game; this is the kind of crap that is really making want to go 100% retro.
Only one game:
Earth Defense Force Insect Armageddon - Loved the other EDF games, hated this
For the industry in general?
This gen being worse than the last.
A lot of small developers dying out.
The rise of "moe" in Japanese video games.
The lack of quirky games the Japanese made in the PS1/PS2 days.

Never said an RPG needs any of those attributes to qualify as one. An RPG that is. A hardcore RPG, I expect at least the game to reward skill and punish the lack of it, hence, permadeath is very common. When I made that list of typical hardcore RPG attributes, Roguelikes came into mind. Roguelikes have most of these attributes, and yet they are some of the most interesting games to play to this date. Nethack, which has been around for over 20 years is still being played today. I am sure that in 20 years time Dragon Age Origins will be long forgotten.
Hardcore RPGs are supposed to be punishing, brutal and frustrating. DAO was just lenient. It didnt really punish you for your failures, nor did it reward you for your skill.
Mirror's Edge was by far my biggest disappointment.
Uncharted 3 was my most recent disappointment, mostly because my hype was relatively low and it didn't deliver. Sad, Uncharted 2 is my favorite game this generation!
Yeah Mirror's Edge was a a big disappointment to me as well. The gaming community hypes it up way too much, the platforming isn't that fun to me and they force you into combat when it's awful.Mirror's Edge was by far my biggest disappointment.

Mirror's Edge. After seeing the amount of praise the game got on SW, I got the game and was bitterly dissappointed. Gamespot's score is perfectly justified, IMO.
Ah, how could I forget that game? I thought Gamespot were being generous with their score to be honest, I didn't understand all the praise the game got from gamers.Mirror's Edge. Halo 3 - The campaign was awful and I couldn't get into the online. Custom games with friends is still a lot of fun GTA IV - Awful gameplay and I just didn't find it fun. Story was very good though and the voice work was fantastic. Gears1 and 2 - Both games were just OK for me. Both campaigns were not involving at all and I didn't find the gameplay to be that great. I did give Gears 3 a go at a friends house and I thought it was a slight step up from the previous two games.Just-Breathe
Damn, you could just have said '360' :P
Spore. I really wasn't sure why everyone was so hyped for this game until I saw a gameplay trailer for the first time. It had an amazing concept, and the gameplay seemed decent. I wouldn't label it as a bad game, but it's a disappointment considering how it seems almost incomplete after I finished it. vguy555
Ah spore, such an amazing concept. The execution left alot to be desired.
I really hope there is gonna be a spore 2 with refined gameplay.

So, which game has all of that ? And if any games exist with all of that, they sound very, very tedious.
Anyways, I found FC2, GTAIV and RDR to be disappointing, well, actually, I didn't expect anything of them since I knew they would bore me to tears, so I guess they aren't disappointments after all.
So, which game has all of that ?svenus97
No game that I have played has all of them, but several have over half of them. Nethack for instance has 12/15 of the things I listed. In a non roguelike example there is Thracia 776 which has 9/15. As I stated, they dont need to have all of them for me to consider them hardcore. The things I listed are only stuff that are typical elements in Hardcore RPGs.
For the sake of comparison, Dragon Age Origins have 0/15.
