Both!
The best games are always opinion, so it's hard to just go by them.
The best sales are like a popular vote among the masses of which console is preferred.
DaBrainz
The quality of a game is entirely subjective. Sales is the only reasonable method because they are based in pure fact. There is no universally good or bad game.famicommander
Thats why we have standards to judge, they may be opinions but they're still agreed upon standards like Gamespot, IGN, Metacritic and Gamerrankings. Games are way more important, no one goes into best buy and asks the clerk which one has the most hardware sales they instead ask which has 'the most games/the best games' or they look at the large shelf space each system has. No one makes their decision based around sales.

apparently the general public doesn't care if it's lacking 3rd party support... or maybe it isn't lacking 3rd party support to them...
Fanboy and long term gamers are jaded in that they think there opinion of what is good or bad support is the general public opinion...
Sales are a measure that don't have a fanboy, or gamer / non gamer bias to it.
There has to be a medium or else whats the point of SW? Everyone has elected standards on how to judge games or else sites like this wouldn't exist.

But sales aren't the best way to determine the quality of anything. Most here wouldn't consider 50 Cent bulletproof better than 95% of the PS3's library because it has sold more. No, it makes the most sense to go by critical acclaim IMO.

Yet my opinion tells me that the Wii has more good games than the PS3.
The facts say that the Wii outsells PS3 every month.
You can disagree with one but not the other.
Why doesn't someone just bump the thread that had the poll on it made by Casey, so that people who weren't aware know the answer to this question.xscrapzx
That poll was scrapped for one with the option "anarchy." Anarchy won. :)
No "official" BS please. If you need a poll to prove a point, you don't have a very good argument.

No these sites exist because we can't agree on the standards. If we all agreed there would be no "war".

I don't think anyone is debating that how well a piece of software sells tells you how good it is...
The debate is weather game scores or hardware sales should decide the winner, and it's both.

The problem is, we don't all use sites like this.
And sites like this, especially this site, can be wrong.

But tbh, and I like to think this goes for most people, the top 10 games on gamerankings do not reflect my top 10. There are maybe 2 or 3 games in the GR top 10 that deserve to go in my top 25.

I'm not saying your not entitled to your opinion but the winner of system wars isn't determined by yours, its determined by the collective. And that can never be JUST SALES. Or else a person with no knowledge of games can be just as knowledgeable as you are about games, someone who has done it for years.

I know its both, seems like he was trying to say sales alone. Sales can never be the sole reason.

So your an elitist?
Why shouldn't new gamers opinions count? Because they don't like the same stuff as you?
And why do you assume that the people are buying consoles with no knowledge about games? Is that your excuse for the Wii selling so well?

I was never aware of that I thought games were voted the most. My apologies and what is wrong with having a standard? I don't think a poll is unfair as far as SW goes. I think it would be fair and relevant to have the system that wins be judged by AAA titles, considering that is what is touted most around here about which one is more supieror. Hey what do I know?
I think a poll is a good point, if more people vote on something that is a genral consensus on why something is good or bad.

But I don't consider the 100 or so people who reviewed the game listed on GR "the collective". Frankly most reviewers I read don't know their arm from there butt. I consider the 100s of millions of people who purchase consoles and games "the collective", and these people will never have a massive vote of what the best games are. If they did, games like Madden and GH would be there instead of Zelda and Mario.

Yeah, the original "Official" Games vs. Sales poll turned into a huge mess, and so it was redone with the option for "Anarchy," that we didn't need an official standard. If I recall correctly, anarchy won by a landslide.
The problem with a poll is that this debate has been going on for a long time, and...well, it's ending a debate with a poll. It may never end without a standard, but that's much better than ending it as a popularity contest, y'know?

I'm not talking about just sites like these when I say the collective; The 8.5mln people who bought Halo 3, the numerous high praises that is has recieved from countless sources are the collective(NOT the people who could care less about gaming); Who are you going to believe more, a guy like Jack Thompson when he says "Halo is a bad game" - when he hasn't even played it or the hundreds of publications and millions of gamers who sing Halos praises? Anyone can have an opinion, not all are profound and rightceous.

But when you 8.5million people bought Halo 3 you are claiming sales matter:o
And the praise it received from countless sources I believe are in fact the 100 or so people I mentioned before on GR(unless I'm missing something). Yes Jack Thompson is a lunatic, but IMO so is the guy who gave LostWinds a 5.5, that review was neither profound nor righteous.
