Kept MGS4 an exclusive, PS3 Slim, the rebranding... they sucked at the beginning, now they're doing stuff right. Some of it, at least. The Playstation 3 has gone from being a overpriced dust gather, too arguably the best gaming platform this gen.

It certainly has, but the system's library was already so good that the support it is getting now is good enough to keep it going for many years.

What Sony did right was Playstation 1 and Playstation 2. Sony´s brand name is still incredibly strong and those 2 consoles are the main reason why PS3 survived the first 2 years. Now, it´s a great system with many games but saying that´s the best one is just an opinion. Imo it´s nowhere close to 360 or PC.

They released the slim 300 dollar ps3. Which is what they should of done from the beginning.
New Kevin Butler marketing campaign is also worth mentioning, they finally cut the weird crap out and focused on what the Ps3 could do instead of the "experience" the ps3 was

Yes it is, and like i said it´s a great system. But why does it make the arguably best system this gen?
I'm sure we can all agree the turning point was MGS4.
Silverbond
I'm a huge Sony fan and I don't agree with that at all. I don't think there is any evidence that MGS4 helped PS3 sales at all. Certainly not in the months following the games release. In fact, only price drops have seemed to help them up until they were able to finally build up a nice library of all types of games. Now they are at $299, have some great games out (or coming out) and they are supposedly profiting finally.
So really, as much as I love the Playstation brand, the only thing SOny has done right this gen is NOT worry about third party exclusives (which are vanishing anyway) and putting all their focus on building up FIRST party exclusives.
time was always on their side. you had to be a pretty rabid fanboy to not see that eventually the ps3 would be a good system.

They looked ahead. They were aware of the direction the market was going. They knew this gen was going to be twice as long as is typical of the industry. Having blu ray was a critical move, as dvd is on its way out. What cost a lot of money initially for some, turned out to be quite the investment. $600 doesn't really even seem that overpriced anymore, if you think about it. People got a PS1, PS2, PS3, Wireless Internet box, Blu ray, and as it turns out, a netflix box AND a 3D blu ray player.
The units are also pretty reliable. I know the YLOD, so its called, is certainly possible, but I don't know a single person that has even heard of it. When you contrast this against a system that is known to fail, it makes it look all the better.
A constant stream of very nicely produced games doesn't hurt either.

Isn't that kind of like saying the only thing MS did right was the Xbox. And the only reason the 360 is popular is because of the strength of the Xbox brand?

Really? I must be behind the times, I mean my PC is still running 2x DVD drives. I've yet to see any reason to purchase a BD player.
I love Sony's exclusives and still play God of War III, but dont forget that in comparison to other Blu Ray players the PS3 was the best for the same price. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation BD players had upgrade issues. Some came without internet connectivity, others with warnings that certain new features on new BD disks were not supported. It was a huge MESS, the only sure fire player out there with great upgradability was the PS3. So for someone looking to purchase a BD player that would not become obsolete in 6 months was to purchase a PS3.
Did PS3 need BD player this gen? No, and if they would have started at a smaller price point (and DVD) I bet they would have beaten MS in sales by now.
we all know that the only 'mistake' Sony did was releasing the PS3 at such a high price.. Back in 2006/2007 even with inferior multiplats + lack of high quality exclusives if Sony released the PS3 at $399 (max) we wouldnt be talking why PS3 is in last place this gen...
Ohh and games (exlusives) helped a lot making the PS3 a great gaming console....

I think it´s diferent since 360 is more successul than Xbox1
I think it was the synergy with the PSP that helped. Xbox doesn't have a handheld to keep their content (new and classic games) portable. There is SOOOO much good stuff on the PSN store now it's startling.
[QUOTE="tagyhag"]kept a firm hold in other exclusives.khoofia_pikaWRONGO. Re5= Lost. FFXIII= lost. GTAIV= lost. DMC4= lost. I don't think RE5 or GTA4 were ever exclusive to the PS3. Weren't they announced as 360 and PS3 multiplats?
Not a whole lot this gen in my opinion. PSN is still a joke The controller is a relic and long overdue for a redesign. Blu-Ray seems like a hollow victory in hindsight They dropped a slim model very early in the life cycle of their console. PSPGO will be remembered as one of the biggest mistakes SONY has made right up there with the PS3 Every major exclusive has failed to meet sales expectations, by large margins The CELL was a bust and now even SONY is looking beyond it's failed experiment. SONY greatest achievement however was managing to hold onto some very dedicated fanboys that will eat up all the BS SONY feeds them.iBrodeo
Dude, I dont even think I can find a facepalm pic big enough for this.
What about MS and theyre crappy designed hardware? what about the fact they gouge you at every turn for their accesories? What about the fact they splintering their userbase by offering stuff only for GOLD membership? what about the fact MS is bleeding First party studios? What about the fact their relying mostly on Third Party? Trust me, MS screwed up plenty this gen.

I think they went from being leagues behind the competition, to neck and neck for 2nd place... but I think it was obviously the price drop. donalbane5,000,000 gap is pretty far from neck and neck. The new redesigned XBOX is flying off the shelf and HALO has not even launched yet. The PS3 vs XBOX 360 gap will widen once again.

lol, you think Halo is that big of a syestem seller at this point? even with the new redesign, anyone who wanted Halo probaly already has a 360. Anyway, well wait and see. I still kinda think PS3 is gonna pass it eventually. And this gen going later then usual will only help that.
