there are strong rumors that M$ is planning to announce the new Xbox this year at E3, the jump between the original xbox and the x360 wasn't that big, so naturally i am not expecting so much but M$ now realizes that Sony can bring new ideas and strong hardwared like bluray and the Cell so M$ should consider that.

if the rumors are true, then we shall see the PS3 aganist x72 face to face for at least 2-3 yrs ( Sony is still commited to 10 yrs life span), does the PS3 have any chance in this compitition? will the companies still support it despite its hard developmnets? is it going to sell as Sony expects?

If they do for the love of god I hope its not called the "Xbox 720"... they need to break the trend of using the same name consoles like "****2, 3, 4..." so on and keep each new console fresh.

TC you realize that Sony is supporting the PS3 for 10 years, much like they have done with the PS2?

We will likely see a PS4 and 720 release at a similar time.

I agree, it'll turn a profit at some point though, relatively soon I would think. We'll have to see.

Either way, I was just correcting the TC.

I know it was, in which they stated they're going to support the PS3, like they have done with the PS2 up until it's 10th year (coming up).

We saw the PS3 before the PS2's 10th year, just like we will see the PS4 before then.

Plus in this recession, I see a new console release from both companies in 2011 at the earliest, or possibly 2012.

well if i'm not mistaken sony is loosing about 40$ per PS3 sold, so they're really not far off from their goal. Unless they drop the price

I'm surprised they got it down so quick, especially with the original cost of Blu-Ray. At the end of the day, as long as they make some profit, it would be pointless to discontinue. Much like with the PS2.

That's when Sony thought PS3's would sell a bit like PS2's did, which is certainly not the case.

Microsoft is stupid, they aren't going to risk alienating there fanbase launching a new console only 4 years after the 360 was released. The 360 has been to much of a succes for that to happen.

Besides, if Microsoft launched this early they'd be killed (and I'm mean slaughtered, annihilated, dead on arrival) when Sony and Nintendo launch there next generation console which you would have far superior technology than the Nextbox. It would be exactly what happened to the Dreamcast, great sales at first but then everything would go south with the arrival of the true next generation.

In terms of sales, no way. In terms of games, both left the Wii behind a while ago :P

This year would be a bad year to introduce a new console, I wouldn't be surprised if i new one came out next holiday season though. No, i dont think the PS3 could compete with the new Xbox. Sony will have the PS4 ready to drop when M$ drops their next console. Sony understands that M$'s one year head start really costed them a lot of potential sells and got a lot of people fired. They wont make that mistake again.

Actually, a new Xbox would be killed in a price war right now. You are correct, they have a big following and a success that they can build on to really start running the industry. The next console will come late next year or spring 2011

as i recall, i said "announced NOT released" in my original post, hypothetically speaking, if the new xbox is released this year, would the PS3 have any chance to continue selling? And what do you expect in the new xbox? these were my original questions.

microsoft will be the dark horse next gen. i dont see sony changing their strategy. they are a hardware company first and a media company second.....i suspect they will persue a powerful multimedia center strategy. i think they will be smarter about costs and pricing next gen. nintendo have been hugely successful this gen and are once again a force to be reckoned with. MS and sony may claim there not competing with nintendo but the bottom line is that both of them have been soundly beaten from a business perspective and they know it. next gen i think ninty is just going to refine and improve the concepts in the wii and close the gap in horse power between it and sony and MSs next consoles. they wont re-enter the horsepower race though....theres no point for them to do it. but with MS its harder to call. remember that MSs strategy is not to beat sony..its to take the console market (same objective as sony and MS). they used sonys strategy becuase it had been very successful in the past and if any company has the clout to take on sony, it was MS. they were going to match sony feature for feature and undercut them. so what will they do next gen? they cant have a super powerful console that can also appeal to people who have no interest in technology or traditional games...that would be too expensive. going the middle ground (a fairly significant hardware upgrade, not as big as between xbox and 360, with an easier to use controller thats stll suitable for traditional games) then they will be in no mans land. it wont out ninty ninty nor will it out sony sony. its very hard to call with MS. they are not a hardware comapny...they dont care if the 360s hardware is used in other markets. they just get hardware companies like ibm and amd to design and build the hardware. MS are a software and service company first and foremost.

Unless the new Xbox is released at the same price point as the PS3, I would see the 720 gaining no traction initially in this market.

A lot of people just don't have the money.

Very true, unless they decided not to go with Blu-Ray, sticking with DVD again (which I just can't see).

Even then, the tech wouldn't be a huge jump over PS3/360.

Unless they suprise us all and go Wii this time around :P

well... they could go the way of direct download.

Technically that would eliminate the need for a disc drive and it's related costs

Very true, but I think we're too early, infrastructure wise. Looking at over 5gb per game (compressed to hell and back).

I only get a 60gb cap on my bandwidth

Sure... You just keep telling yourself that, and maybe one day it might become true.

what makes you think it will last long if doesn't turn a proffit?

First of all, Sony started breaking even on the PS3 a few months ago. They expect to start seeing some profits sometime this year. ON TOPIC... you do realize that for the next Xbox to compete with the PS3 MS would have to pay Sony to use the Blu-Ray technology. This will not happen. Why would anyone pay the competition for their tech?? Since they won't, MS will have to use DVD again... well that format has reached it's potential, and nobody wants to switch discs with every game. This is why I think the next consoles we see will run mostly on ditigal copy... even now you can get any song or any movie ditigally... it's only a matter of time until games are the same (some are already... SOCOM, Warhawk, Burnout, etc.). On Demand will also be a big part of the next gen.

Interesting. I wonder if it would have any effect on the content of the game (loss/degredation etc). If not that is some pretty damn interesting stuff.

well the way i see it:

you download the compressed file

you uncrompress it on your xbox

and you play it with no loss/degradation

It's not just Sony that owns Blu-Ray. Also Microsoft were invited to join the Blu-Ray association, but turned it down. Probably due to the HD-DVD format being in direct competition.

First of all, Sony started breaking even on the PS3 a few months ago. jshaas

If by a few months ago you mean Q4 2008... well it was christmas, it is to be expected. If the PS3 did turn a proffit in Q3 2008 then you are correct

Tr. ON TOPIC... you do realize that for the next Xbox to compete with the PS3 MS would have to pay Sony to use the Blu-Ray technology.jshaas

Maybe

This will not happen. Why would anyone pay the competition for their tech?? .

You mean like how Sony laptops come with Windows?

i agree

EDIT: this was the latest quarter i could find about sony, it still suffered a loss

I highly doubt MS is going to be stupid enough to release a new system already, I bet its a new Motion control game, trying to be like the Wii.

Although some games have motion established already, it might turn out successful. And Wii Owners will get jealous, and Xbox 360 owners with Wii's will get pissed for buying them

this motion sensitive stuff are in dvelopment for both PS3 and x360 rightnow, and they will make their way to the next generation for sure.

I doubt it, I know they are both in development and patented...but I doubt they will make their way, and if so as a add on not the main controler

They wont make that mistake again. lhughey
i dun think PS4 is on Sony's priorities anytime in the near future, dun forget that PS3 will be on advantage wz it is userbase and bluray player and its advanced proccessor.

Unless the new Xbox is released at the same price point as the PS3, I would see the 720 gaining no traction initially in this market.

A lot of people just don't have the money.

-Traveller-

and if they DO release the nextbox at the same price the PS3 is now i won't be able to help but wonder just how much of an improvement the new hardware is over the PS3

Very true, unless they decided not to go with Blu-Ray, sticking with DVD again (which I just can't see).

Even then, the tech wouldn't be a huge jump over PS3/360.

Unless they suprise us all and go Wii this time around :P

So your argument is that CPUs and GPUs from 5 years ago are just as powerful as today CPUs and GPUs? Because the new Xbox will have technology that will be roughly 5 years newer than the PS3s. I'm sure you know about Moore's law that says that CPU power doubles every 18months right?

If they do for the love of god I hope its not called the "Xbox 720"... they need to break the trend of using the same name consoles like "****2, 3, 4..." so on and keep each new console fresh.

-Snooze-

That would remove the brand recognition, to a certain extent

How about NeXBOX?:P

Their are much stronger GPU's and CPU's and GPU's are the most important part, also Moore's law has kinda been put on halt for now, we've reached the limit, until someone finds a more efficient design of a processor

I said it wouldn't be a "huge jump", dependant on the price they want the console to sit at. If it's staying competitive with the PS3 price (hypothetical), they wouldn't be able to stick a much more advanced GPU/CPU in. Otherwise they'd end up with a huge price at the beginning of their gen.

MS won't announce the Xbox 720 this year. It will be announced 2 years from now.
