I would personally say I miss the quality of single player games the most. Now I am not the most active gamer these days, but after having recently purchased MCC I feel both the FPS and RPG genre have stalled when it comes to their Single player innovation. I feel that the general lore has become stale, and there are less and less risks being taken to create fantastic story driven games. They have gone from a multitude to only a handful in my opinion. What's your take on the question at hand?

Nothing. Was an alright generation that lasted way longer than it should. Maybe the worst generation of JRPGs, maybe, the generation of 15 COD games and 123213 other FPS games. The generation of gimmicks, bad games that sold insane amount of copies ( Wii sports, Wii fit etc ) and drama ( wii died early, PS3 losing in sales etc )

I don't see too much of a disparity, so not much. However, I did have a BC PS3, so that would probably be it.

I think the competition between Sony and Microsoft is sorely missed. Seemed like both companies were trying harder back then, as the gap was a lot narrower than it is now. For Nintendo, I miss the virtual console of course

O think maybe new ips? Last gen devs were more open to try new things, I think, and as development costs rose, they started to play safe.

I miss the less microtransactions content and full fledged games at launch, less updates, etcetera.

The PS3 had more interesting games. Outside of that nothing. The 360 had awesome hardware but nothing of interest to me. The PS3 was where its at but the hardware sucked. The Wii was simply garbage in so many ways that its not worth listing.

I miss the old school turn based JRPG’s that we had with Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. Would love to see sequels for these two games.

@Pedro: the hardware itself didn't suck, it was more powerful than the 360, but it was hell to program to, to port and to optimize, hence why most ports were shit on ps3, but exclusives looked better on that console. I've read one Dev saying he was glad about the ps3 though, because they learned a lot with the ps3.

He said that ps3 and 360 was like this:

Ps3: a car and 1000 hamsters

360 - a car and 2 horses.

1000 hamsters are stronger but harder to coordinate, 2 horses are weaker but easier to coordinate.

I tried Lost Odyssey (this year), it was good and bad. Very traditional.

  • I liked how most racing games seemed to have a little Burnout in them.
  • I thought Sony gave their strongest first party lineup ever.
  • Motion controls. There were a lot of bad games, but enough got it right to make the Wii a great system.
  • The fact it lasted so long. I don't need to pony up for a new system every five years.
  • That all three systems at one point had some form a backwards compatibility.
  • Action games were better than ever.
  • That games could be patched, though this did lead to the trend of games being released unfinished. But it was still nice that flaws could be ironed out instead of games being buggy forever.

Free multiplayer on my PlayStation.

Running and gunning. Though, the genre was already pretty dead at that point, with only a few still left, like Stranglehold, F.EA.R. and Max Payne 3. It's all been replaced with zoomed in over the shoulder views and iron sights that force you to walk. Lame.

How everything wasn't about upgrades, loot and RPG crap.

I miss the diversity of games, and all the low budget efforts.

On current gen, devs play it safe, and never give us anything really innovative or new. Last gen was different. Back then you could still make games with relatively low budget, so we got much more interesting games.

The thing I miss the most is that for 200 I got my first x360 (my pc was unable to run most games even cs 1.0 would lag a lot) only games I played were some mmo on the very minimum with some lag.

When I got the x360 I got amazed. Oblivion. Gears of war. Halo. It was like a miracle such performance. For many years (till 2016) I gamed on x360.

Now I own ps4 pro. one x. and 1050ti pc (Im not part of the master race they told me here in gamespot 1050 or below isnt even worth looking at. I might swap my 1050 for a 1060 3gb soon so the master racers wont bully me :D

I miss many PS3 titles being 3D. My wife and I enjoy 3D, buy every 3D Bluray we can get our hands on still- which is hard as a Canadian, 3D Bluray's generally don't come to North America anymore we have to get them fro UK Amazon. I miss gaming in 3D, PS3 had many outstanding 3D titles. That's it, I'm hooking a PS3 back up and hitting up some Motorstorm:Apocalypse on my UN65JS9000 :)

I miss the turned based RPG's MS used to get like Lost Odyssey etc.

From a System Wars point of view, I loved the brutal cut-throat competition. For the first 5 years of the gen, 2005 to 2010, in particular. X360 had it's head start, massive quality library, best controller/online and achievements, tempered by RROD. PS3 was late and expensive, with crap multiplats for years... but goddamn, what an exclusive library it fought back with, plus eventually it improved in other areas. Meanwhile the Wii ("Wii would like to play :D") had an entirely different view and atmosphere, and despite the ultimate failure of motion controls and my many problems with how Nintendo handled it's latter years, for a while there it had oodles of innovation, god-tier 1st party titles and lot's of quirky Japanese 3rd party titles.

From 2011 or so on, PS3 had fixed most of it's problems, X360 abandoned reason for madness (Kinect) and Wii had died, so the gen was less fun then.

This gen is pretty boring here, WiiU failed, XOne was meh, PS4 is awesome. Fine for gamers, boring for System Wars :P Switch livens things up a bit!

It's not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart!

also the GTX 1180 is right around the corner (July 2018) which will probably be followed by the GTX 1160 30-60 days after the 1180 release, if you can wait 3 months you'll get about 35-50% better performance for the same money as you would now.

I miss Xbox Live Arcade and how every single game on there was required to have a free demo. I enjoyed exploring the Xbox Live Arcade library more than I enjoyed the big retail games of that generation.

I miss Xbox being awesome. I miss games having a wow factor to them. Games look better now, but they just aren't as exciting.

Gears of War absolutely blew me away in 2006. Gears4 is just sitting in my library collecting dust, haven't even touched the campaign. Halo 5 I had to force myself to finish. I guess it's because it's attack of the sequels and last generation we got new stuff. Gears of war, COD Modern Warfare, Assassins Creed, Fallout 3D, Mass Effect, Bio Shock, Dead Rising, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Batman Arkham, Fight Night, Dragon Age, it was all brand new back then.

Edit: this generation from the Xbox side of things Titanfall and Quantum Break flopped. Our best new game was Sunset Overdrive.

Like atleast 1 person already said, devs seemed more open to taking risks. I feel like there were more mid tier solid games and new ips.

And arcade racers - genre is almost completely dead. NFS is all that's keeping it alive for me at this point and we all know how wonderful EA is.

Same goes for Hack n slash.

@lundy86_4: I still have my BC ps3 lol. I'm enjoying the Maximo games again. #OLDGAMES i play them on any system if I want to. Just prefer the convenience of having them on one.

I guess i miss my PS friends actually playing MP games. None of them really want to play anything these day but SP games except COD or Star Wars or Destiny. I used to play Resistance games, KZ2, GoW Ascension mp last gen.
