A lot of debate occured after MGS4 and GTA4 getting 10 out of 10s. Some people said it was perfect and thats why it deserved it and others said it was "prime" and had very few flaws. It seemed odd to me that we had such a debate over a 10 out of 10 which should be a perfect score, and thus there should be no flaws in the game(just like a 10 out of 10 in anything). This is NOT i reapeat NOT to debate mgs or gta's 10 out of 10 but instead, what does 10 out of 10 mean to you?

Is it perfection?

Close enough?

what?

Thanks

Not refering to either game but I've said for years no game I've ever played deserves 10/10. For me it would mean a game that couldn't be improved apon at the time, a game with no flaws.

Not very much until I play the game.

Coming from gamespot, all reviews, especially big name games are treated as highly suspicious.

If you aren't willing to give a game a 10 for whatever excuse then don't use a 10 based rating system. Plain and simple.

To me a 10 means the game excelled in all areas. Or that it was as best as possible. The whole argument that I often hear about no game deserves a 10 is rubbish to me.

I think this is viewed differently in different cultures. For example in my degree at university in UK 70/100 was a 1st or an A (the highest grade) and it was impossible to attain 100. I think 87 was the highest mark anyone ever got in the 3 years I was there.

On gamespot it means that it's either a Microsoft game, available on a Microsoft console, or unavailable on a Microsoft console but so hyped that there would be an uproar if it didn't get 10. They are biased towards MS on here and it goes back to the last gen too.

It's just it. 99.9 % of games won't reach it. In my opinion, Gears of War would be at like 9.3, and it is the best action game I have ever played.

on gamespot according to there scoring they said it means a game is great, above good. Its not close to perfection at all, 10 means the devlopers did something right and made it enjoyable.

To me tho not on gamespot a 10 means overrated.

I guess nobody ever deserved a 10 or A rating on their exams, even when they did answered everything correctl, because nobody is perfect correct?

Nice logic you have there.

But if for example, someone actually answered everything correctly. What would be the paramater used to only give it a 87/100?

I've never classed a 10 as 'perfection'... at all. I don't think *any* game is perfect, some games come close but they always have flaws or imperfections which prevent it from being classed as 'perfect' like any game, film, novel or anything else for that manner.

To me, when you give a game a ranking, be it out of 10, a percentage, or whatever, you are marking a games worth and achievement within a particular frame (1-10, 1-100 whatever) so giving it the top score means that it is a remarkable achievement and one of the finest examples of that medium (so games that score a 10 on here or any other website are, in that reviewers opinion, the very finest achievements of videogaming and deserve the highest score possible).

To me it seems ridiculous to even have a 10 if people consider it as 'perfection' and an unattainable mark - you're implying 9.8 or 9.9 is the best mark you can get so the marking should only really be out of that if you get my drift.

Giving a game an 11 (or 101%+ etc) to me would be perfection, because that very mark implies it is perfection, beyond what is possible to achieve, which is what a lot of people consider perfection to be.

This generation it means overrated, because lets be honest no game this entire gen has been 10 worthy. Not GTA4, not MGS4. These games are more like 9.0. while games like HALO3 and Gears of war are 8.5.

I do not complain. I understand that GameSpot's 10's do not mean perfect, but in my books, it does, and therefore, no game, if I was the reviewer, would ever get a "10".

much like most reviews the marking system was somewhat vague. We wrote essays rather than multiple choice of simple right or wrong answers. When asked about it a professor gave the straight answer, "No answer is ever perfect it is always possible to improve upon it, so it is not possible to score 100."

Grading remained consistent so it was possible to compare scores between years. What if they gave someone 100 and someone wrote a better essay the next semester? WHat score do they give then?

When a movie gets a 5 Star rating, does that mean it's perfect?

When you go to a 5 star hotel, do you consider it to be brand new, and flawless?

No, but you know that the experience will be great, and have little room needed for improvements.

That's why the games got 10's.

That seems awfully vague to me. The whole definition of "better" it comes first from personal bias and judgement. And it just seems somewhat flawed to me.

But like you mentioned, everyone has their own culture and way to see it. We French have a totally different mentality than the British.

But then again, all of the important counties in Europe think they're the best.

It's really about getting the closest. Perfection is associated with a rating of '10'. When a perfect 10 rating is given to a title like GTA4, Mario Galaxy, or GMS4 you have to examine it honestly and admit that every video game title ever could be improved upon, making it less than perfect.

One of my favorites, I consider Super Castlevania IV on SNES to be about 9.5. While it made incredible improvements verses the originals, it was also very short and much easier than previous Castlevania titles. Close, and damn good, but not perfect.

10 out of 10, to me, means that it is either:
-the best of its kind
-has changed so drastically from earlier in the series, yet remained great
-as close to perfect as can be or
-its bad parts are outweighed by the good by a large amount.
-Is so good in its genre that is raises the bar to which every new game in the genre should look up to.

At GS 10/10 doesn't mean anything, like everything else at this site. 10/10 is 100%. You can't be at 100% if you have a single flaw or you would only be at around 99%. No game is without flaws. GS says that it 10/10 is prime. In other words 9.6-9.9 It really could be any one of those. GS f'ed up their score system though so we'll never know.

The whole rating debate is flawed, because ultimately it's not about the rating itself, but what everybody personally thinks about what's deserving or not.

If its a franchise I know, its a must get. If its an unknown, its worth looking into.

Overrated or perfect? How am I supposed to know what 10 out of ten game we are talking about!

For example= GTA4 Score=10 Overrated

MGS4 score=10 perfect
