It means that out of all of the games coming out you must play this game. It is a game that is not perfect, but is excellent in almost every way. This means that because nothing can be perfect, there will be flaws, but those flaws do absolutely nothing to diminish the quality of the game.

New score system, GTAIV and MGS4 are considered the best titles this gen, if you give them a 9.5 they joing a bunch of games that already have that score and Gears would still be the best game (based on GS score) this gen. What else could they do?

I don't think they're perfect but MGS4 at least is by far the best game I have played in a long time and the first true masterpiece this generation, hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more later on. I have yet to play GTAIV but most people think it was overrated.

State of the art? Translate, please.

Well basically the game in the reviewers opinion, has achieved the highest level of positive and highly attentive implemented aspects in that games development possible at the current moment--for that respective gaming title within the category or genre it falls under.

It means that in their opinion the game is a must have. It means that the guy playing the game really enjoyed the game etc. Its all opinion. Everyone has an opinion about Every game before they even play it. Its all predetermined. I believe that If he game gets a 10/10 then it lived up to the reviewers expectations.

It doesn't matter what it means to us it matters what the reviewer says 10/10 if he says 10/10 means the worst game ever that doesn't mean you can celebrate and say "well 10/10 means amazing to me"

I guess it's because I thought "state of the art" represented the highest level of development in something--and I was too lazy to type anything else behind it. So I had hoped I got my point across with those four words alone.

I feel a 10 is unachievable. I believe it should be more used as something to shoot for and you will always fall just short of 10.

That would be a 7. If it's just good, then there would be a lot more 10s.

Then, why did you write it!? It's like me writing, "To me, a "10" means that the game "is running out of fuel and the chief says ever heard of 'red'?". Then, someone asks, "What do you mean by that?", and I say, "I DUNNO!". So, why did you write something that you do not comprehend?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

10/10 = perfect, any games reviewer, magazine, website that gives any game top marks loses credibility, sorry but nothing is 100%, 10/10 = 100%, it's simple logic. I will never ever take gs seriously again after they gave GTA & MGS 10's, thus implying the games were perfect, when they are absolutely not perfect, leading to people spending money from reading a misleading review.

What does a 10 mean to me? Ideally, perfection.

Practically, taking into consideration the whole concept of reviewing and the breakneck pace of technology today, means something less. I consider a 10/10 (or a 100, or a A+, whatever) game a game that is so good you cannot meaningfully improve it under current technology, hardware and reasonable human ability. This means that a game can have dozens of flaws, but as long as those flaws cannot be mended without worseing the experience, they will not detract from a 10 score.

For example, GTA4. I can see quite a bit of texture pop-in and even model pop-in, especially if you change islands on a sportscar at full throttle or when flying, and that's a flaw. However, fixing that would mean that R* would need to make sacrifices in other areas. They would need to, say, make a smaller gameworld, reduce texture resolution, insert load screens between islands, drop model complexity, or a combination of these. Would this end up with GTA4 being a significantly better product? If, in your opinion, the answer is no, then you shouldn't dock points for the pop-in from a 10 score.

To me, it's perfection. No game deserves that.WeAreBorn
Thing is, doing so, you end up killing the idea of numbers. Of course, this might be the end intent: To show the flaws of numerically scoring games.

Sweetie, chill out. It's not even all that serious. It's just a post first of all. Secondly--

(The state of the art is the highest level of development, as of a device, technique, or scientific field, achieved at a particular time. It also applies to the level of development (as of a device, procedure, process, technique, or science) reached at any particular time usually as a result of modern methods.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_the_art)

I clearly comprehended what I said. Im just not taking you seriously, because there isn't really a need for me to say anything after I responded to you the first time.

The flaw is not the numerical score itself. It's that it doesn't mean the same thing to everybody.

10 out of 10 means the game is flawless, and there aren;t any flawless games. GTAIV is not a 10, more of a 8.9.

MGS4 is close 9.7

It's perfection, which is way after the point of "exceeded my expectations of the genre" or "better than perfect games before it". As you can see, pretty damn rare.

It means... we need to do away with numerical scores.

No game is perfect nor will it ever be in my book. Yet I can overlook some flaws, gripes, technicals issues, etc to an extent too.

To me it's just a big number that's supposedly sacred to some people depending on the review medium/site.

Personally I dislike scores on a whole. It's the only focus to some people on what game they should buy and I believe the 10 point review scale is the most putrid of them all. Do you see movie reviews on a four star scale that give a movie four stars go "OMG Teh next Steven Spieldberg Movie!" or "OMG Teh newest Godfather! Al Pacino movie! etc" no, but yet it's still a good movie by the critic. It may not be the movie you'll herald down the road in time nor even a perfect four star even, yet to some it's just a great movie or so.

I personally feel we need to do away with scores and just have a review text.

To me a 10 means nothing really. I didn't and won't buy GTA IV because of it scoring a 10 on GS, and I knew I was going to buy MGS 4 regardless what it scored.

10/10 is perfect. There has yet to be a game that is truly perfect in every way possible. Gta4 simple cant have the 10 because the grpahics are average, and MGS4 cant have the 10 because the online multiplayer part is average.

Too bad not everybody uses your book.

Why would make you say your preference is better than whatever others may have?

You can keep not giving 10s all your want. But the reviewers that do , I doubt they would care. Same thing backwards.

A 10 should be given to a game that does something new in gaming, or is a milestone in gaming. I don't think that GTA4 should have gotten a 10, and I haven't played MGS yet. I think that older games were worth the 10s, like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.

it means it is considered by many to be one of the greatest games ever.

but noobs think it means "perfection" and hence "overrated"... as if such a thing was possible

not to mention it is in the opinion of the reviewer to begin with... so wtf

A 10/10 means that it's almost as good as Daytona USA 2. :D

[QUOTE="WeAreBorn"]To me, it's perfection. No game deserves that.WeAreBorn

Whats the point of the score even existing if no game will EVER get it?

It's just it. 99.9 % of games won't reach it. In my opinion, Gears of War would be at like 9.3, and it is the best action game I have ever played.

To you, what is the difference between a 9.3 game, and a 9.4 game?

A 10/10 means i want more really badly...Half life 2 was a 10/10 for me especially with the cliff hanger endings while games like Doom 3 and FEAR and Crysis were more like 9-9.5...i want more but i can wait.

IMO a 10/10 means that the game is the best in it's genre to date. Both MGS4 and GTA IV are worthy of their scores.

The only games that deserve 10/10 are...

  1. The Secret of Monkey Island
  2. Planescape: Torment

  • Monkey Island revolutionized game cinematics, character development, plot humour, and countless other things.
  • Planescape: Torment is the plateau of the Role-playing game. Everything has gone downhill ever since.

Yeah I agree with Outrun. It was the best 2D racing game before 3D. 10/10 worthy.
