A rapidly expanding userbase that makes developers make more games. If you look at 2008 plans, developers are taking the Wii alot more seriously because this time last year, no one was expecting it to be so rediculously popular.

I don't fit into either of those categories. Fail.
$250 is not cheap and usually not considered an impulse buy to many, so that is a weak excuse. The Xbox 360 Core is $279....BioShockOwnz
agreed...add 50 to get an xbox, add 100 to get a ps3
Wii is NOT cheap

a person willing to spend 200+ bucks doesnt care for 30
I don't fit into either of those categories. Fail.BioShockOwnzThe Wii is aimed at non-gamers. That's Nintendo's main demographic. Take this for example, you can go out and buy Woman's makeup, did the company mean for the product be meant for you? No. It's meant for women but you can still buy it - and use it... if you wanted to. That's the best analogy I can come up with right now, it's quite late so I'm very tired. :P

For the people who are saying it sells well because it's cheap. No. I cheapness sells, then why didnt the GC come out on top last generation? Also why isnt the Xbox core pack selling? It only costs thirty dollars/euros more.
The reason why I think the Wii is selling great now and will sell great in the future is because it is far more accesable than the 360 and PS3.
Basically, you can roughly divide people into three groups:
Hardcore (Hardcore is ofcourse a very hard term to define. But in my opinion a hardcore gamer is someone who invests quite some time in gaming and stuff revolving around gaming. While not just looking at the games that receive a lot of hype and media attention.)
Casual (Again a hard to define term. Though I guess you could say a casual gamer is a person who plays games while not looking to far into everything around gaming.
Non gamer (Easy to define. Someone who never or very rarely plays games. With the exclusion of solitaire and minesweeper.)
I think Nintendo managed to appeal to all of these groups with the Wii. Whereas the PS3 and 360 only have appeal for the first to.

That's hardly ever the circumstance, and if one if ever to be in that stature, he had to uve' understood how to become good with money. If you're not good with money, you won't succeed in life; hence, why a lot of people in my country are in debt. The Wii is aimed at non-gamers. That's Nintendo's main demographic. Yes part of the Wii's strategy is to target non-gamers, but it does have alot of aspects that appeal to every type of gamer. I'm a proper gamer, and I think the Wii is fantastic, fancy that?
Just because other consoles have games with more mature content and things like online, doesn't mean they're more hardcore.
Think about it... If the Wii is for non-gamers when why would developers, including Nintendo, bother to make games such as Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil and No More Heroes?
Resident Evil 4 for example sold 1.4 million units on the Wii. I'm sure those 1.4 million weren't casuals.

If $30 is a hefty addition to the cost, then $250 is not cheap for these people.
It's the cheapest console. Compare it to the other consoles and it's very cheap. Simple. Concept. If $30 is a hefty addition to the cost, then $250 is not cheap for these people.

The major part of its marketing is aimed at non-gamers and/or casuals only with a few games aimed at the "hardcore" gamer, which are some of the games you listed. And every system has aspects about it to appeal to every type f gamer, but the Wii's main aspect, are aimed at people who don't play games. I'm glad to see the approach that Nintendo has gone, strictly the whole innovation(yeah, right) over evolution thing, is working out for them. I've been a gamer for quite some time now and I see the Wii as a pos. That's my personal opinion, I've played it more than a few times to know I would never buy it. It's not my cup-of-tea.Yes part of the Wii's strategy is to target non-gamers, but it does have alot of aspects that appeal to every type of gamer. I'm glad to see the Wii has 1.4 million "proper" gamers out of about 19+ million Wii owners. Great ratio there.
its not that hard to figure out the Wii is targeted at everyone but the other 2 are not, plus PS3 and 360 have to share the same type of audience but the Wii doesn't really have a competitor for 2 of their audiences the young kinds or the seniors murat8
2 other? how about Females, and new gamers? neither the ps3 or the 360 really addresses those audiences too.

suposedly wii is good at targeting women, children and casuals. 360/ps3/pc target harcores and poeple play sports games/mmo.

Stevo_the_gamer
It's not the ratio that matters the most, it's the fact 1 million+ people bought a hardcore game on a system that's apparently "for non-gamers"
Zelda TP and SMG sold 4-5 million, that's a pretty good figure.
It's not that though, it's just the whole "Wii is for casuals and non-gamers" thing is really annoying, seeing as I'm a Wii owner who is more than satisfied with the proper games it has to offer.

Haha. I'm well aware of that, hence the rolling of eyes and sarcasm. :PIt may be annoying but it's very accurate -- to a certain extent, of course. Nintendo's main demographic is non-gamers. I've said this countless number of times. Keyword. Main -- not -- only.
An Increasingly balanced games library!
Tons of ways to control the games!
Appeals to everyone. locopathoNot me... It's not like I'm bashing the thing, but I just don't feel attracted to it, I don't think I'd ever buy one.

According to Reggie is the avarage Wii owner 29 years old, so that's a preatty inaccurate statement.

I think Reggie's on the mark with that one. I'm 30 and I know that the Wii is the only game system that is ever mentioned at the yuppy dinner parties and get togethers that i attend.
The only reason it has sold so good is because its cheap.PerfectGamer17
Gamecube was cheapest last gen, even cheaper than Wii if I recall correctly.
...How did that turn out again?
Oh and Wii's have been selling for rediculous prices on eBay :|
Mario, Zelda, Metroid... As long as they keep making those games there will be over a million people who will buy them. Just like there will be the same 2 to 3 million people lined up every year to buy Final Fantasy, Halo or Madden etc. Installed fan base, strong long term exclusive platform titles. And yes if you have to choose one of the three from a budget point of view it is the cheapest.
The only reason it has sold so good is because its cheap. if it were $400 it wouldn't have sold over 8 million yet. but Nintendo fanboys will disagree of coursePerfectGamer17
GC launched at $200 and eventually dropped to $100. As far as I know it was always cheaper than PS2. Yet it's lifetime sales barely beat the Wii's first year.
