With the recent news that Sony is apparently pulling the plug on PSVR2, that got me thinking: a) I got rekt! but b) what other consoles have I owned that also failed? For that, I had the Vita and the Wii U. And I still enjoyed them for what they were. Vita at least had a decent amount of first party, and it did give us classics like Persona 4 Golden, Gravity Rush, Killzone Mercenary, and more. Wii U gave me Bayonetta 2 and that alone literally justified its existence, so I can live with that. I also enjoyed Smash Bros, DK Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker/Twilight Princess remasters, and I still hope to finally play Tokyo Mirage Sessions. As for PSVR2, admittedly, it was cool tech, but Sony should have supported it with better first party titles.

Dreamcast - Still have it and pop in Rival Schools and Powerstone from time to time.

Wii-U - I regret Buying. Got it for BOTW, beat it very quickly never touched it again. I think I had maybe 40hrs on the console total.

PSP- Never Played it much, but it had a few good games on it. I'm just not into handhelds, I don't like looking down constantly and I don't need the portability.

Gamecube - I really regret buying. not many good games on it imo and the controller was made for tiny hands. The "c" stick is garbage for a camera stick and the back triggers made that plasticy "CURCHING" sound when you pressed down on the springs behind it.

Was interested in PSVR2 but seems like a big waste of money to get it now, too bad... RIP

Tropical Freeze made the Wii U worth it for me. Played Smash and Bayonetta 2 on it as well. I got it around the time the Switch released so didn't spend too much.

Gamecube - didn't plat a ton of games on it but still enjoyed it plenty. Melee is one of my most played games ever. Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were awesome and enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 alot back in the day as well.

I don't think any other system I owned is much of a failure... although Xbox Series consoles are starting to feel like they belong in that conversation.

PS Vita and Dreamcast and if this is true the PS VR2. I don't regret buying any of them.

Although I don't really consider the PSvr 2 dead just because it doesn't have loads of first party support. As long as it gets third party games it will be fine.

What exactly is the definition of a failed system? Some that I see in here seem questionable.

Vita is personally the best portable I ever used. Its not too big like the Switch so u could bring it everywhere, beautiful OLED screen and you can sideload PS1 and PSP games from PS3. Really big library of games for me but one drawback is the shit memory space. Due to Sony fukery the Memory card costed so much. Bought the 16gb card and stored quite a number of games but I am still salty due to it cost me almost 3 times more compared to normal sized microSD. For that price I could have bought a 64gb or 128gb Microsd.

Owned Wii U, Switch, Xbox One and my experience with them is.... shit. Barely used them. I havked the Wii U and xbone is just stored somewhere idk it exist. Switch is a personal fail for me I can count with one hand games I finished on it. I seldom used it I forgot where it was for a few years. I am an early adopter too I bought it few month before xenoblade 2, man that game was absolute garbage only pedo nintendo fans could love.

😂.

I purchased the Borderlands edition Playstation Vita and it was awesome. Sometimes I pour one out for the many gamers who missed out of it's brilliance.

Anyway the only system that I regret purchasing was the 3DO.

Have owned most systems over the many years and have enjoyed them all. The lesser selling ones that I guess could be considered as “failed” that I enjoyed are:

- Neo Geo

- N64

- GameCube

- Wii U

- Dreamcast

- Xbox One

- Xbox Series X

Dreamcast for sure. I got that bundled with a couple games for $99 after Sega had announced theu were exiting the console business. Great system, and I gotnlots of games cheap as everyone cleared inventory.

Neo Geo Pocket Color, got this bundled with 6 games when they were dumping inventory. Didn't put a ton of time into it, but it was a fun little novelty.

Gamecube might be my most played system. While it was certainly disappointing to see it miss out on a lot of 3rd party stuff, it never felt like a failure to me. Every genre was well represented. It might have been known for not having many rpgs, and yet there were some really good ones like Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online. I never lacked for something to play.

I bought a Wii U. It had some great games on it; games like Rayman Legends, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors. It's unfortunate that it sold poorly. However, the Switch is much better, so I have no bitterness or resentment towards Nintendo.

The Tiger Game.com. Magnificent beast of a machine. It had Internet (theoretically). 2 game ports...2! In all seriousness it was awful. I was a kid on got sucked in my the features and Internet (big thing at the time..whatever happened to it?)..and a stylus and touch screen!!! It came with 2 games. I think Solitaire may have also come as a built in game....I can't quite remember. Mistakes were made.

The wiiu. I liked the wiiu. It's a bit sad that it didn't pan out. With all the handheld PCs now (not to mention phones and tablets) it would be cool if a developer tried to replicate the same thing on the PC. I managed to get the wiiu for something like 50 quid new by using a combination of deals which was also nice. I wouldn't recommend one now though unless you are a collector. Basically the only worthwhile game that's exclusive to it is Xenoblade X (which will probably get a switch 2 port). I hope Nintendo bring back some of the wackiness with the Switch 2 though. But yeah: for 50 quid I got my moneys worth in terms of usage. I still have it...sometimes i get the urge to dig it out and tinker with it.

Vita: Some of the best gaming hardware Sony ever made. Fantastic system. I just wish it was the Nintendo Vita (which the Switch basically is). Still, smaller 3rd parties kept that system going. I discovered Ys on the system. Got plenty of use out of it. In terms of game count I had a very similar number of 3DS and Vita games in the end. Sadly my Vita had hardware failure. Sony had stopped production and a replacement wasn't really worth it at the time. A shame :(.

Gamecube: Hardware wise basically the perfect console for it's time imho. If it just had clickable sticks and a second shoulder button it would be without fault hardware wise. Everything else....top class. When looking at other consoles each gen I always ask "what's the gamecube of the gen?". A great example of punching smart. Games wise I had a solid collection in the end. Some absolute belters like Metroid Prime and Zelda Wind Waker. Wierd games like Vieutiful Joe. Fzero GX. Cracking games. It was definitely a second class citizen in terms of 3rd party content though.

Possibly a controversial one: PS3. "But PS3 wasn't a failure" I hear you say. If the gamecube and the wiiu were failures (and they were) then the PS3 was very much a failure. It fell well short of expectations. It didn't outsell the PS2: not even close (what was it...only about half the PS2 sales in the end). It also cost Sony a fortune. The only upside for Sony was it got blu-ray over the line to be the standard (how valuable is that these days though?). In a lot of cases it also gave people an inferior experience in multiplats compared to the 360. It was just a poorly designed system and the controller was also absolutely awful. A bad system to play games on. It had some great games though. To their credit: Sony threw the kitchen sink at it to keep the show on the road. I still have mine boxed up and think about digging that out too from time to time. I had the original 60GB model initially but that got the YLOD....while playing Dark Souls 2 (you were already on thin ice Dark Souls....kill my console too why don't ya!! "You Died" not enough?!?!?!?! :P j/k). But yeah: Some great games on a poor gaming system.

@Archangel3371: I see N64 mentioned, and while true, it underperformed at the time. However...

-Had several games in it's library that revolutionized the industry. Mario 64? Goldeneye ("But it hasn't aged..." shut up!)? Ocarina of Time? Smash?

-Still brought aspects of console games taken for granted in the mainstream, like out of the box four player support and analog controls.

-Sold moderately well overall. Still defeated SEGA in the end.

For me, it was Dreamcast and PS Vita. I have a hard time seeing why N64 would be a failure as it has awesome great games...especially Banjo/Kazooie games are my favorite on that console.

@nintendoboy16: Yeah, kind of hard to think of it as a failed system. When I think of failed systems I think of:

- 3DO

- Atari Jaguar

- Virtual Boy

- Wii U

- Dreamcast

- Vita

- Super Grafix

Saturn, Dreamcast, Wii U, Virtual Boy, Kinect, Turbo Duo, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Vita, already knew they were failed when I bought them but they all had fun things to do.

Not sure why people think the GameCube is a failed system, it was a strong comeback from the N64. PSP also did well.

Dreamcast, the at home Sega Naomi 2. I even got games that released in 2006 for it.

It has soul calibur on it, one of the best fighting game packages of all time. The quest mode is seriously an underrated fighting game teaching tool. I didn't even know it's trying to teach me fundamentals until I played my friends after completing all of the missions (esp the secret ones).

Good times.

@girlusocrazy: GameCube sold less than 64. The "Nintendo is kiddy" stigma hit them hardest then with how Gen Six was pushing how "mature and adult" games could be (Grand Theft Auto getting popular with III/Vice City/San Andreas, and Sony and MS with exclusives like God of War and Halo), to the point of trying WAY too hard (Ubisoft with Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, SEGA with Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sony with Jak II, two of those did hit GCN though).

In addition, GCN didn't have game changers on the level of the N64. No hardware innovations (PS2 and Xbox did). And less games that stood out on the level of what 64 had. Sure, RE4 was revolutionary, but we all know that still wasn't in Nintendo's favor (Capcom higher ups wouldn't allow it, much to Mikami's dismay). Even first parties were considered at their low points even if some of them did improve in terms of gameplay (Mario, Zelda). Star Fox Adventures and Assault were disliked. F-Zero wasn't popular with what's said to be their best installment (don't tell Nagoshi though).

If GCN wasn't a failure, Nintendo's approach with Wii-onward wouldn't have happened. But here we are.

My dad found me a Virtual Boy shortly after it's demise (but while it was still relatively new) for 20 bucks at a garage sale. Honestly for that price it was awesome. I think it's gone way up in value as well but I just like the novelty of it. Sure, it's got few good games but Teleroboxer is worth having it around for alone. A really cool punchout style game in first person so the sprites of robot fists coming at you in 3d is great.

Plus the controller is really cool; it's completely symmetric with two dpads that feel great and really nice handles. Works super well for Teleroboxer as you get one dpad per hand.

To this day I try to buy any random virtual boy game I see for cheap. Just bought a random one in Japan for a few bucks and looking forward to giving it a shot.

I've owned a Vita since launch and I haven't played a single Vita game on it. The only game I played on it was Disgaea 3, a port of a PS3 game. I will play Gravity Rush on it someday, if it doesn't get ported to PC

@last_lap: Well I also take into consideration the games that are on the system, their quality, and the impact they’ve had on both the company itself and gaming in general overall. While the system’s sales are certainly a factor, it being the only factor makes things too basic. If we just go by how sales are in comparison to a previous system’s sales the every Sony console has been a failed system since the PS2. Too simple and too much of stretch in my opinion.

@Archangel3371: Too much side stuff going on there.

If we go by what else you consider in games, then why did you put the Dreamcast in your list?

Even though it was only on the market for 2yrs it had more bangers than any other console in that 2yrs.

In the end Nintendo don't care about the games on the 64, just the sales, because more sales mean more software revenue.

That's all that counts to them in the end.

I think the 64 was Nintendo's best console, and I still own it and play the Wrestling games on it every now and then.

But in the end it sold worse than its predecessor in a growing market. People might not like it, but it failed.

Indeed. Especially when in some regions (mostly North America) there were a sizable amount of kids who had a Nintendo 64 OR a PlayStation. Rarely both. But a Saturn? Good luck finding them.

@Archangel3371: Too much side stuff going on there.

If we go by what else you consider in games, then why did you put the Dreamcast in your list?

I mean, the Dreamcast literally was the final nail in the coffin for SEGA hardware. THAT is a MAJOR failure.
