what franchises do you think would just be impossible for a casual gamerto get into. like wich games just throw so much difficulty and complexity at your face that you throw the controller at the tv cuzzing your mouth off lol

i would say

Ninja gaiden

demon's souls

metal gear solid

diablo

well MGS and diablo arent particularly hard games but i just feel their depth and complexity(and MGS's story) would put off the casuals cuz it cant give em a quick fix

whats your truly hardcore franchises?

P.S dont turn this into a "whats the definition of a hardcore and casual gamer?" type of thread

there will be much debate over this because "hardcore" isn't easily defined/agreed upon.

anyways, my vote would be for Cave shmups
dodonpachi (i.e. dodonpachi, dodonpachi daioujou, dodonpachi daifukkatsu)
ESP (ESP Ra.De., ESPGaluda, ESPGaluda II)
Ibara (Ibara, Ibara Kuro)
Mushi (Mushihime-sama, Mushihime-sama Futari)

Almost any roguelike, with Nethack being the most obvious example. To clarify, in almost every roguelike:

1. You lose your save on death.

2. There are a LOT of ways to die.

3. There is an enemy that steals your items, an enemy that drains levels, an enemy that kills you instantly, and an enemy that summons more enemies.

4. There is some mechanic to prevent you from level grinding.

5. The game world is randomized every playthrough, so no memorization

6. You have to identify items. So instead of finding an amulet of poison resistance on a dead enemy, you find a square amulet. It could be the amulet that lets you fly, or the amulet that kills you.

I'd say the best Nintendo franchise that matches your description is Metroid. To my knowledge, only gamers who really know about the industry play metroid games.

The Monster Hunter series is also something only dedicated gamers can get in to.

Also contra

most Schmups

Xcom

and much much more

i don't see hardcore as a gametype, more of a lifestyle choice and gaming habits. Basically you live it, breath it, and take it very very seriously. I don't think there are games that fit into this idea, you play through once, then there is nothing to come back to or bother experiencing a different way. Look at ME, , play though once, put it on your shelf, never care about it again, or you can play through 40 times and get everything there is, sleep with all your ship mates, dominate the galaxy or save it...

and here sparks the debate.

this is where I disagree. I believe there are hardcore games and hardcore gamers. Not just one or the other. Games that are aimed towards those whom enjoy steep learning curves and masochistic mechanics (hardcore games). and then gamers who dedicate and put a certain amount of effort into any type of game (hardcore gamers).

this thread seems to be a combination of both.

TH1Sx1SxSPARTA

Any game that takes extensive amounts of practice. People that say otherwise are wrong. I wouldn't say anything from this gen or even the prior one. I remember easily beating games that people consider "impossible" these days--battle toads, ninja gaiden, double dragon--rather easily back when I was under 10 years old. Now, it wasn't like I just picked them up and destroyed the game, but a learning curve was involved. A lot of the older games required complex minute timing. These days not so much.

LovePotionNo9

Imo, that is the complete opposite of hardcore. The only thing that game requires is for one to sit down at a computer and pay a monthly fee--there's next to no skill or mastery in that game whatsoever.
