Outside of looking prettier tell me a game on either the PS4 or Xbox One that plays like it could never be done on either a 360 or the PS Triple.

I ask because after playing the Gears 4 beta, I was like this is it? It literally played like all the other Gears with the only difference being a higher frame count.

It's crazy to think this kind of environment interactivity existed 9 YEARS ago and yet today most environments remain static in games.

Nothing really felt next gen to me yet.

Witcher 3 feels like it coulda ran on 360

Arkham Knight felt like it coulda ran on 360

Back when the xbox 360 came out bioshock felt next generation gears of war felt next generation

I haven't even come close to that feeling yet I hope dev's are paying attention we haven't gotten the next gen game yet imo.

Definitely can't be that space epic...

Not graphics, were talking about what games actually feel next gen in terms of gameplay.

Any game can have a prettier coat of paint.

Were talking about the PS4/Xbox One, not the PC.

That's a pretty ambiguous statement. Everybody has a different opinion of what "next gen" feels like. Some are satisfied through visuals alone while others believe it's more about having a lot of interactivity with the world.

One game that really felt like a next gen title to me was Witcher 3. Everything that game did with the size and scale of the world, the detail of the environments, the rendering quality, and the crazy branching story telling really felt like it set the standard for open world RPGs in the future. Of course some would say it was just the same as what we had before with a new coat of paint.

I think the first really "next gen" feeling game out there will be Star Citizen. Already you can do things in the alpha that simply realize more gameplay potential from an existing genre. The ability to seamlessly transition from ship, to space, to a space station while bearing an FPS weapon is pretty incredible. There is also the consideration that each object in the game world has a level of physics associated with it. Further features are being added shortly which allow for a lot more customization and interactivity of the world around you.

The game is trying to approach existing and living in the game world from a very realistic perspective. Trying to minimize the amount of gamey ways you interact with the world around you. This means directly interacting with objects in a logical fashion, rather than interacting with objects through a menu or some sort of 3rd party interface. In Star Citizen you should be able to get up from your seat in the ship, walk to the back, grab an item, open the door, walk out of the ship, and then set the item down in a container all without ever hitting a menu. To me that's pretty "next gen".

That said, Star Citizen won't be fully realized until the end of 2017.

witcher 3 springs to mind.

the level of detail in that game (in the cities especially) really need strong PCs and current gen consoles to work. they could have made it work on a PS3 or 360 but there would have to have been some serious compromises (like shadows of mordor on last gen machines...its not the same game really).

actually shadows of mordor also springs to mind also and we can see the result on last gen machines.

i cant think of much else.

Honestly Tearaway for psvita. the why it connects gameplay with Vita gimmicks, makes it legitimately next gen. It would feel out of place on another console.

SC will likely be a technical masterpiece, but that is for the PC side.

What on consoles would you say feels next gen?

Not much yet. No Man's Sky might with a lot of very similar mechanics to Star Citizen.

I guess one could argue for Assassin's Creed Black Flag since it has seamlessly moving between land and the ships all while interacting with objects all without entering some menu to do such a thing.

Uncharted 4 is a technical marvel and is pretty "next gen" in terms of its genre. The genre doesn't really lend itself to a lot of non visual, more gameplay orientedy enhancements and the Uncharted series has been seamlessly transitioning the player between standard moving/shooting and on-rails sequences for a few games now. Visually it's pretty advanced compared to others in the genre. It has a level of detail and interaction of effects that other games simply don't have yet. Makes for a more immersive experience.

I think Halo 5's Forge Mode makes a pretty good argument for "next gen" feeling. A pretty easy editor that has opened up the door for a lot of the crazy mod-like maps we've seen in the past on the PC. That's a nice step forward for consoles and I think that can help user in a new age of console multiplayer that is less "hardcoded" than previous generations. The PC has been experiencing this for decades but it's tricky with a console and 343 may have cracked it. Other games like Super Mario Maker, Little Big Planet, and even Mod Nation Racers all do sort of the same thing with a focus on custom content. Halo 5 just takes it a step further.

It's becoming harder and harder to feel "next gen" as games become more sophisticated. I think the less menus and arbitrary workarounds we do to interact with the environment brings us closer to that "next gen" feel. Also less arbitrary limitations with basic visuals. More rendering effects, better smoke/water interaction with the environment, more animations for both characters and environmental objects, more physics driven animations and objects within the environment. Stuff like that can bring a "next gen" feel to a game from a visual and immersive perspective while stuff like what I talked about with Star Citizen bring a more "next gen" feel from a gameplay and player interaction perspective.

If you take graphics out of the equation, what do those games have in them that make them feel like they are an entire generation ahead of the last generation in innovation or gameplay? They are all pretty games that couldn't have been done last gen. But what about beyond that?

I am struggling with trying to think of new gen features. I love the implementation of Drivatars. Taking PC out of the equation, that feels a little next gen to me. Also, the size of worlds with no loading (matching that of PC titles for the most part), kinda feels next gen to me. An example would be Minecraft, which was able to grow in size by 36 times.

I agree with you. I am one that says the Witcher 3 was that "next gen" feeling game. I don't see how that would hav been done to the same level on 360/PS3. The trimming that had to be done to get Witcher 2 to run on a 360 tells me that. Uncharted 4 visually obviously but 2/3 through nothing about the gameplay or world size and interactivity says it needed PS4.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt easily. No way you can make that game for PS3 and Xbox 360. Uncharted 4 looks legendary but the core design is possible on PS3 and Xbox 360. Battlefield 4 with 64 players is another example.

It can't be done on last gen Consoles without compromising the gameplay. Rest of the games look pretty but their design is possible on last gen Consoles with worse graphics.

Titanfall, awesomeness that just blew my hair back, looks and plays good too. Dead Rising 3 as well, I mean the zombie count in each screenshot is just insane, no last gen console could pull that off. Games like Destiny and The Division adding to this kind of seamless online MP experience. Onnline (in general) for games this gen is a lot better than games for last gen when we got a lot of that player hosted garbage that was laggy.

Do people actually play Crysis or do they just run circles and jerk off to the scenery? I typically found the actual gameplay to be quite boring, so while people brag about first Crysis, I found Crysis 2 to be a far superior game in terms of gameplay, story, pacing, the Ceph enemy design was a substantial improvement as was the power use made easier.

Anyhow, if goofing off in games feels next gen then I was already doing that last gen with TES Oblivion, re-arranging dead body ragdolls in orgy scenes, like my inner 12 year old wants me to.

You praise Witcher 2's gameplay, yet you bash Witcher 3's controls, which are basically Witcher 2 controls done better. But whatever... Let's not derail the thread.

Even if it was done on old gen tech really well, Metal Gear Solid V at 60 frames on both consoles, and the amount of gameplay mechanics you had access to in that game? Absurd. Which makes every other game this gen not exactly next gen to me. It further highlights how unimpressive triple A development has gotten. Because sure they wouldn't look as pretty on those old machines, but their core gameplay translates back just fine.

This isn't the first time people played Dead Rising or Assassin's Creed, which literally could not be done that way on old machines (because the enemy/npc count was pretty significant to the gameplay of those games). The Witcher 3 at its scale and systems could be done no problem, it just wouldn't look as good, but it would still be the same core game. So this gen's "true next gen experiences" are a bunch of facades.

Uncharted 4. Everything interacts with you, it's the most life-like game in terms of animation too. It's just not possible on last Gen consoles with those physics. Crazy details that have effect on the gameplay. It feels so dynamic.

That's not true. There are places that I cannot interact with like bushes and tables and boxes. Drake just does the I cant climb here animation when I try to.

There was know 360/PS3 games that rendered at 1080p 60 frames or even 900p.. So we know performance has jumped from last gen.

Quantum Break i don't think the 360/PS3 would be powerful enough to run it. Ryse most likely would look like ass on the 360 or PS3

The Witcher 3, Batman AK, The Division and most open world games, mostly due to their seamless transition between interiors and exteriors (no loadings).

It may not mean alot to some, but for me adds alot to the atmosphere.

If graphics don't count and only gameplay is allowed than basically nothing has been "next gen" since the 80's. Cry more.

@brah4ever: Looks like a dolled up PS3/360 game. Crude animation, lower polygonal count character model and environment. Last Gen is so last Gen that even maxed out old PC games are starting to show their age.

like others have said, nothing outside of graphics and animations, but it doesn't need to be.
