What in the world was Nintendo thinking with that monstrosity of a controller?

Nintendo is making a real console.

The other two are playing catch up of making a low end PC and will probably continue to do so with PS4 and Xbox 720.

Haziqonfire

nintendo hasnt been catering to the hardcore crowd since the n64 days it's crazy how awesome n64's library was compared to their stuff today.

The Wii library is larger and has more quality games.

And before you do what so many others do and say "Oh but the N64 had so much impact, it was a revolution in gaming!" I do not care. Comparing the consoles objectively, the Wii has so much more going for it both in core and casual games.

wii has no games that appeal to me....i own too many consoles and computers and games from 90s to now to be a casual.

n64 was about the hardcore gamer

wii is about the casual gamer.

Nes was more powerful than other consoles of it's time and even snes could overall do better graphics than genesis and n64 owned other consoles at the time also...but ever since gamecube nintendo has failed xbox was way more powerful and then wii they didnt even try.

Shame they dont care about making powerful consoles anymore.

Could you explain in detail why the Wii U controller is a failure? I've seen dozens of topics like these, but not once have I seen an actual decent argument.

sandbox3d

As a previous post pointed out it is the size of an etch a sketch... I also fail to see what unique features it will offer besides on screen maps and the controller will drive the consoles price up.

So in other words you've got nothing?... besides an exaggeration of size, and a lack of imagination, or foresight regarding design. OK.

And how many times have we seen console prices get inflated over something that doesn't even really benefit gaming? Yet here we are looking at something with mountains of potential regarding gameplay and you're worried about price... when we don't even know the price yet?

Try again.

Look the Wii U and Vita have innovative features... Problem is both innovations are not good... In the case of the Wii U the innovative feature would be decent if it did not make the controller the size of a mastodon (back touch pad is just terrible on every level).

The Wii U has had no games shown besides games on other consoles??? Am I supposed to praise what could be on there?

The Wii U's controller is bigger than the Jaguar's that is a fact.

As if 3d makes all games better?

DKCR is the best DKC game by miles. I cant even believe you went there.

And yeah the Wii is full of shovelware. Its the most popular console this gen so its to be expected. Did all the shovelware make the PS2 a bad console? And no, I'm not saying the Wii is another PS2, so please dont derail the point.

If you can not see past the shovelware to all the great games the Wii has to offer then I do genuinely feel sorry for you.

You haven't held the thing in your hand yet. The press that actually did at E3 all said it was pretty comfortable. Oh, and the Wii Remote and Nunchuck and all the Wii peripherals will be fully compatible with WiiU.

nintendo doesnt care about making more powerful consoles than the competition THIS IS UNLIKE NINTENDO.

The Nintendo you grew up with is exactly the same - use more affordable hardware and use hardware when it's cheap. Just look at the past and you'll know this, it's only this generation that the jump was more obvious.

Yeah, you proved my point. Let me elaborate:

  • SNES release: 1991
  • Genesis release: 1989
  • N64 release: 1996
  • Playstation release: 1994

Duh, they'll be more powerful. Cheaper parts after a few years, easier to make better hardware.

This is too easy.

It seems powerful hardware is your thing. Even if it means ignoring great games you just want powerful hardware. Cool. So what the hell are you doing playing consoles?

Invest all of your gaming funds into a bad ass PC and enjoy yourself.

Right - and therefore the platforms have better specs and technology moved along and was cheaper.

If Nintendo was fine making hardware when it was more expensive they'd be willing to take a loss on it. They were never willing to do that and are still reluctant to do that now (save the 3DS, which put them into a corner).

right, but his point was that the wii was released a year after the 360 and was still inferior to both of the HD twins. so nintendo hasn't continued that trend of releasing consoles with superior hardware for cheaper.

Wat?

You really think a gaming company like Nintendo can go toe to toe with software and electronics giants like MS and Sony?

Nintendo makes great games. Thats what keeps them successful in this industry. Do you really think they can afford to bleed money like Sony and MS? You're just being unrealistic now man.

Sure Nintendo could have made a more powerful console than the Wii and still have been alright. Not as successful as they are right now, but they would have made it. But "destroying" the 360, or PS3 specs wise?

No ... because it was technically impossible to create hardware like that without suffering a loss. Nintendo doesn't have different sectors where they can make money off of like Sony and Microsoft. They can't afford to sell a console at a loss and make up for it elsewhere.

"Oh Nintendo only did it for money". Do you not understand business? Nintendo isn't your buddy, neither are Sony and Microsoft.Nintendo is a business and as a business they made made the single best decision out of any of the big three companies with the Wii. Both Sony and Microsoft wish they were half as creative as Nintendo was and half as smart as Nintendo was back in 2006.

And I'm glad they did tbh. I'm greatful that the Wii-U wasnt another "me too" console. Don't get me wrong, the PS3 and 360 are definitely fine consoles, but I really enjoyed the different types of games that the Wii had to offer.

Comfortable, ergonomic things usually don't *look* comfortable at all. Case in point: the Gamecube gamepad

The gamecube looks plenty comfortable. You know what doesn't look comfortable? A pile of needles. But if you don't hold one in your hand, how can you tell, really? I'm sure the Wii U controller isn't huge, it just looks huge.

I just hope that forum hate is not enough for Nintendo to change their minds. I think its a great idea and I cant wait to try it for myself and see what great uses developers can put it to.

I just don't get why this controller is getting so much hate when just no one here has used it before.

It's possible to use experience and reasoning to form an educated opinion about something you haven't directly experienced yet. I can guarantee, I've never put my hand on the stove. But you know what? I'm pretty sure its hot. I don't think touching it would be a good idea.

After my experience with the Dreamcast VMU, the DS, Videogames, and seeing the damn thing, it just doesn't look like a good idea.

Honestly, the only thing that worries me about the Wii U controller is how Nintendo wwill handle Smash Bros.

the GC controller and the smash games compliment eachother so well like milk and cookies.

Agreed, it's like the GameCube controller was MADE for Smash Bros.

I just hope that forum hate is not enough for Nintendo to change their minds. I think its a great idea and I cant wait to try it for myself and see what great uses developers can put it to.

Agree 100%. There's nothing wrong with that controller. Haters just fear imminent Nintendo dominance.

You are totally right! What in the world is Nintendo thinking, inventing new ideas for the industry to steal? There's no way technology like this leaps off the ground.

The Classic Controller Pro works pretty good with Smash Bros and I'm pretty sure the Wii-U will allow use of those.

I'm not a fan of that controller. I can't think of ANYTHING interesting it could add to games (and moving your hud/map off the screen is not interesting).

I'd much rather get a new/better wiimote.

You seriously can't? I can already think of switching weapons in mid battle in beat 'em ups :o Or maybe selecting your move in Pokemon Stadium 3. Pictionary in HD!! I think it has a lot of potential. The only thing I'm afraid of is that it won't be used (not taken to its full potential), or it'll be used in horrible ways, like what happened to motion gaming.
