The 16 bit era had a buttload of Platformers and Fighting Games

The 32 bit era had a buttload of RPG's and 3rd Person Action Games

Last gen had a buttload of GTA wannabes and Halo Clones

What do you think will be the or one of the whored genres of this generation?

I personally think the "Brawler" genre is going to be huge on the Wii. In case if you don't know what the brawler genre is, it's basically Super Smash Bros. and Jump Ultimate Stars way of gameplay. I feel that after Brawl hits, all those Wii owners will crave for more of the same type of gameplay.

What do you think is going to be the or one of the "it" gernes of this generation?

Yeah I know shooters will definately be one of them, however I think the Wii's genre will remain a mystery as of the PS3's and handhelds.

Seems like it. How about a generation when the 'IT' genre is good games? ;) Now there's a genre we can all enjoy...

They need to do something different like Metroid and Bioshock.

-RPGamer-

The main focus of the game is to explore not to shoot. There's a reason why almost every prime fan calls it that, along with artcile writers and reviewers with Nintendo (though Nintendo also once said that Zelda was an RPG).

Yes it has the "trait" of a FPS but that doesn't mean it is a FPS.

Metal Gear Solid has many Third Person Shooter "traits" in it so is it now a TPS instead of a Stealth game?

And what's with the "straight face"?

And yet while you explore you shoot a lot. I tire of this concept that MP stands alone in exploration and how dare it be clumped together with other FP perspective titles. It's old.

FPS is the genre that gets the most games, but i think the IT genre isn't really a genre for this gen rather a feature, I think UGC will be huge IT thing during this generation especially later on. I think that LBP will be the first huge game for this, that or it will get a perfect score but not sell as well as it deserves.

-RPGamer-

And yet the objective of the game is to explore the area by finding artifacts, solving puzzles, finding hidden areas, unraveling the mysteries around you, etc and not to just shoot enemies to get from point A to point B and having the enemies defeat become the main focus like a FPS.

I tire of those who say Metroid is a FPS yet they call games that use traits from other genres that contains shooting just as much if not more then Metroid (such as Metal Gear Solid does with the TPS) and still call it the genre it was inteded to be. It's old and quite obvious that the game isn't a FPS.

You're talking about FPS Games not FP perspective games. There's a huge difference between the two.

FPS.

It's already started.

I see your point though I haven't seen any that has really caught my eye besides F.E.A.R. and Crysis, though Orange Box looks to bring me joy yet again.

Other FPS offer side distractions from the main course (getting from point a to point b, which when the day is said and done MP is about that too).

It's quite obvious it is a FPS. You see through Samus' eyes, as in through her perspective (read: first person). And you shoot things. Hence FPS. :|

Nothing of what you said changes those simple facts about the games fundamental design. Other FPS, offer exploration (backtracking), puzzle solving, eastern egg/hidden object collecting, and tell stories too. That doesn't stop them from being FPS.

I grow tired of all these shooters, weather it first or third person, there all the same damn thing. I wouldn't mind them if there was the same ammount of the other genres but no.. bazillions of shooters, 2 platformers worth playing... 3 stealth games? 0 point and click games... RPGs are not up to par like they used to be now there lackluster... Survival Horror errr 0 unless Silent hill 5 has been announced..

But do they do as much? No not even close.

It's quite obvious it is a FPS. You see through Samus' eyes, as in through her perspective (read: first person). And you shoot things. Hence FPS. :|-RPGamer-

By your logic Splinter Cell is a Third Person Shooter. You see Sam in third person and you shoot enemies to take them down hence Third Person Shooter. Here let me try another one, Sonic is a racing game because you have to get from the begining of the level to the end at the fastest time possible thus it's a racing game. Resident Evil 4 is a RPG because you have stats and you can upgrade your weapons to be more powerful and faster. See what I did there? Heck by your logic Unreal Tournament is a fighting game since you fight people in it. And again what's with the "straight face"?

Nothing of what you said changes those simple facts about the games fundamental design. Other FPS, offer exploration (backtracking), puzzle solving, eastern egg/hidden object collecting, and tell stories too. That doesn't stop them from being FPS.

-RPGamer-

Yes but do they do it as much as Metroid? Is it even there Prime focus? No. What's there Prime focus? Shooting things. So is it a FPS? Yes. What's Metroid Prime's focus? Exploring the world around you and solving puzzles. Does it have shooting? Yes. Does it focus on shooting as in taking down your enemies? No, it even at times encourages you to avoid them. So is it a FPS? No.

That's a simple fact as it is widely acknowledge both in the gaming community and the press. Clearly you are in the minority tinking this.

Do they as much? Probably not, some more than others, but that doesn't change the basic design of MP, nor do you even have to partake in a lot of the content MP offers. You can play MP and treat it like you would any other FPS for the most part.

I'll give you the "straight face" all day, I completely disagree with your logic. I've always disagreed with this logic that MP is held to some different standard, when it plays like most other FPS save for a little heavier design for exploration (which you don't even need to partake in again). So :|

Some of you examples like Sonic, are such a reach I won't even acknowledge that kind of debate tactic.

The "Prime" focus of Metroid games is to shoot things eventually. There isn't a Metroid game out there where you don't need to blast through things. I mean let's stop pretending that Metroid as a series doesn't have heavyfocus on shooting stuff.

I don't care if I'm the minority thinking here, I'm not going to lie to myself and act like MP (or Metroid in general) doesn't focus on shooting. Again I can avoid enemies in other FPS, that doesn't take away the fact that I need to shoot things to progress through the game a large portion of the time.

They're not locking you into rooms and forcing you to shoot things to get to the next area for nothing in MP titles. That's not a puzzle by the way, that's straight up FPS.

This argument should've ended here.

some more than others, but that doesn't change the basic design of MP,-RPGamer-

The basic design of Metroid Prime is exploration and figuring out where to go hence "adventure".

nor do you even have to partake in a lot of the content MP offers. You can play MP and treat it like you would any other FPS for the most part.-RPGamer-

So just because I don't use stealth in Splinter Cell but just bust in through the doors and shoot people with is rifle, Splinter Cell is not a Stealth game anymore but a Third Person Shooter? I mean that is what you just said in reference to Metroid Prime.

I'll give you the "straight face" all day, I completely disagree with your logic. I've always disagreed with this logic that MP is held to some different standard, when it plays like most other FPS save for a little heavier design for exploration (which you don't even need to partake in again). So :|-RPGamer-

The straight face is often shown to someone who does something questionable in a negative manner. It would be best to say this in the begining of your post before you run into some hothead in this board.

Some of you examples like Sonic, are such a reach I won't even acknowledge that kind of debate tactic.

-RPGamer-

Well you said Prime is a First Person Shooter which is just as strange.

The "Prime" focus of Metroid games is to shoot things eventually.

-RPGamer-

You don't need to shoot everything in Metroid Prime and if you are refering to that the point of Metroid Prime is to take down enemies then you are mistaken.

There isn't a Metroid game out there where you don't need to blast through things. I mean let's stop pretending that Metroid as a series doesn't have heavyfocus on shooting stuff.-RPGamer-

What game doesn't have you most of the times killing things. Is Zelda a beat-em-up just because you are forced to kill most enemies you see? Is Myst a puzzle game because it has a heavy emphansis on solving puzzles?

I don't care if I'm the minority thinking here, I'm not going to lie to myself and act like MP (or Metroid in general) doesn't focus on shooting. They're not locking you into rooms and forcing you to shoot things to get to the next area for nothing in MP titles. That's not a puzzle by the way, that's straight up FPS.

-RPGamer-

Most (if not all) of the puzzles in the Prime series you don't kill enemies to solve.

Fine enjoy thinking that it's a FPS, see if I care I have a life to live, just as I'm sure you don't care about this arguement since you also have a life to attend to too.

Most (if not all) of the puzzles in the Prime series you don't kill enemies to solve.

Fine enjoy thinking that it's a FPS, see if I care.

Gunraidan

You obviously care, hence the reason this conversation even began. I post it as a FPS and you responded. If you didn't care you would have never gone this far with the conversation.

Did I say the puzzles require you to kill enemies? No, I don't think I did. I said that MP locks you in rooms and expects you to kill things to move on, there nothing "puzzle" about a lot of the content in MP titles.

You don't need to shoot everything in any FPS, I never said you did. That doesn't stop the fact you can't go through the majority of the game without shooting things, the game actually forces it.

And can you stop trying to shoehorn this conversation into other titles, we're talking about FPS and Metroid Prime. Not racing games, not stealth games, not Sonic, not Zelda, not Splinter Cell etc.

I find it hard to believe that MP being called a FPS is "strange" considering this debate is as old as the Prime games. :| (Please refrain from telling me how to post, in reference to my indifference smiley)

[QUOTE="Gunraidan"]This argument should've ended here.

The basic design of Metroid Prime is exploration and figuring out where to go hence "adventure".

So just because I don't use stealth in Splinter Cell but just bust in through the doors and shoot people with is rifle, Splinter Cell is not a Stealth game anymore but a Third Person Shooter? I mean that is what you just said in reference to Metroid Prime.

The straight face is often shown to someone who does something questionable in a negative manner. It would be best to say this in the begining of your post before you run into some hothead in this board.

Well you said Prime is a First Person Shooter which is just as strange.

That's why I call Metroid an FPSAA.

First person shooter action adventure.

It's in first person.

You shoot.

There's action.

And you adventure.

Does that solve everything?

At least it acknowledges it's an FPS, so I guess I'll go with that :)

Jak and Ratchet were there last gen.

That and Ratchet and Clank were like the only 2 popular new platformers last gen. How many new FPS were there?
