I will say Half-Life 2. When you look at it's gameplay etc... it does seem similar to Half-life 1, but having just recently completed both games one after the other, they feel -very- different to me. I don't know or care why, but that is what I think.

Deus Ex is up there and I'm sure SMG would be if I had a Wii. :P

If it wasn't for all the hate Halo: CE could be there as it opened up FPS for consoles more than any other game really, but it has left a bad after tatse to the genre.

my best guess = half-life 2.

Corey_Barlog_SM

Only Fable 2 has the exiting fun real time combat, gameplay variety, stunning visuals, detail, art and world design with vast variety in environments, and epic fairy tale feeling and can ressemble what Zelda OOT did for its time

For christ shake, what does HL2 have to do with Zelda ???

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="CaptainHarley"]

it is one of the best games of all time. this is not debatable. but it isnt THE best game. several games from the last five years have been better.

CaptainHarley

Not being argumentative, just curious: what games do you mean?

- okami: its like zelda, only fresh, original, and actually interesting.

- mass effect: mindblowing game

- half life 2 episode 2: one of the tightest, most memorable gaming experiences of all time

- grand theft auto 4: not my cup of tea, but its definitely an incredible game.

- geometry wars 2: the most laser-beam focused game i have ever played. i have never experienced a game that achieves exactly what it is trying to so well.

- team fortress 2: unbelievably good, focused, enjoyable game on the pc (not so much on consoles)

I'd have to agree that Okami and TF2 come close to or equal OoT's excellence of design (the biggest flaw in Okami was the Blockheads, which were unforgivable). I'm not so sure about Episode 2, though. While it's definitely the best single-player FPS I've played, the pacing was flawed in some areas, and I had no fun whatsoever in the strider level at the end.

I haven't yet played any of the others.

Nothing, but the thread wasn't about what the next great action-adventure would be.

(For the record, Fable 2 is a joke compared to OoT, in terms of design. Shigeru Miyamoto >>>>>> Peter Molyneux.)

I dunno, I always thought Perfect Dark was a superior game over all, genres aside. HL2 would be my choice however if not PD.

WoW is definantly the best consumer of time... Rank 14/t3 warlock, t6/SW geared druid pre BC and in BC. stopped playing now coz its just a never ending vortex lol. No future game will really affect the game industry as much as OOT did really.. (except maybe the next zelda game made for the Wii)

oh man you didnt like the strider thing? u crazy homie. that was like the most heroic climax in a video game ever. youre blasting guys, jumping in your sweet car, peeling out, doing a totally awesome jump out the side while it coasts to a stop, then blowing up enormous monsters. that part of the game was unbelievable.

i noticed you have a gamertag. you really should get geomentry wars 2 if you like old school action shooters. its phenomenal.

also whoever mentioned perfect dark, i agree. it was unbelievably good for its time.

[QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"]

[QUOTE="AgentA-Mi6"] I vave yet to see a game that plays as good as MGS4 in the stealth genre, the cammo, weapons, disarm techniques etc Plus the story telling...is flawless. thats all I have to say. 10.0, GOTY.AgentA-Mi6

With an epilogue sequence that's so overly drawn out and shalmessly uncalled for? The storytelling isn't flawless. If you take a trip to my blog linked in my sig, I don't diss Metal Gear Solid's story telling, but I can explain to you why it's not the way to go in video games.

Another thing, Metal Gear Solid's stealth gameplay is only one of many types of stealth gameplay. There's also the Thief styIe and of course, the Splinter Cell styIe. Both are viable alternatives.

Maybe it was carried over a little longer than most of us expected, but you're negating the impact of the whole cinematic experience between gameplay over only that minimal detail?

You can tell me 100 times Koijima's cinematic storytelling styl3 is not the way to go in video games and It wont change my mind one bit about how masterful of an experience it was, the only major flaw I actually found in MGS4 is that it ends.

Yes it is one of many stealth kinds of gameplay, none of them as critically acclaimed as MGS4 is. None of them pleased me like Metal Gear Did, The first day I felt like a Ps3 owner was the day I watched the opening cutscene of MGS4, I was like being a child all over again the thrill reminded me of the first time I played zelda oot or MGS1 10 years ago, the music from earlier titles made me feel nostalgic.

I believe Nothing comes close to mgs, Absolutely nothing.

^ OoT, as in over-hyped beyond belief despite much superior and with more dept games ?!

Than Halo 3 would the answer.

OoT isn't anything more then a 5 or 6 on a scale from 1 to 10 when compared to games like TES II: Daggerfall, Fallout, System Shock 2 or Deus Ex. Everyone of those games by itself had more dept then all of Miamoto's games put togheter.

Mine would be Super Mario Galaxy. You know, when you play a game, that you will be talking about it years to come. Mario galaxy is just that good. SMG has everything that made gaming fun in the first place. I'm happy to see the critic has also seen that. Even technically speaking, the game is simply outstanding. From the colorful and and excellently designed graphics (thanks to an unmatched art direction), to the unparalleled music. Mario Galaxy is beyond any standard.

Non linear gameplay unlike anything seen before or after, never before seen levels of freedom, great and even wacky sidequests all with with multiple outcomes, multiple endings according to the choices (direct or indirect) done by the player, interesting and complex characters.

Yeah, it's over-rated for everyone thinking excesively liniear gameplay with no choices and consequences and simple good vs. bad binary logic are actualy qualities.

I really liked the strider battle of Ep2. It was a massive change of pace and design as far as Half Life games go, and was pretty intense in its own right.

Team Fortress 2 It seems that whenever I hear criticism towards the game is when the person had played the console version. It's a game that should only beplayed on PC.

That said, no other game really got to me like TF2. Not GTA4, Company of Heroes, Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead, just nothing.

The recreation of the old maps are incredibly well designed (especially Warpath) and the newer maps are very diverse, some are rather large, and also well made. The game mode Payload is an awesome and very fresh experience that requires serious teamwork to win. Really it's just the fact that Team Fortress 2 forces you to work together if you plan on winning the match. You will always need 5 different cl4sses on one team in order to win so they're always in use. The balance, map and mode design are all top notch. So great that the visual style and tone of the game are just a bonus. On top of all of this, the community for the game is great.

I can go on and on and on about how great TF2 is but I'm afraid the post would be too damn big. A lot of people will disagree of me and I know that I'm a TF2 fanboy but I don't care. It's the only FPS I consider to be perfect.

Fable 2 is more fun to play, has a vastly more diverse and varied world that changes too, something F3 could not touch in its dreams

so, Fable 2 is far above by miles and miles for me, it even has a working economy system and alive NPCs, not dolls

It is the true Zelda OOt of this era in every way, and then 10x better

Nothing I'm afraid, after OT was released, people talked about it years after it's release, and some still do. No game has done that in recent time.

You could argue that WOW is such a game, considering it's popularity, but it's an MMO so that's out of the question :P

Fable 2 has even more dead characters, excluding animations that is. They can't even be talked to, meaning they can't be lied to, can't nicefully persaded or intimidated or asked for information or be turned actually helping/usefull companions. You just fart/dance at then and they'll either marry you or fight you.

And I was talking about F1.

From a personal perspective its Mario Galaxy for me. However if I were to analyse the industry as a whole and pick out the game that has had the most influence on video game design I'd probably go with GTAIII.

So far this gen Metal Gear Solid 4, Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros Brawl come to my mind. Of course I didn't play Fallout 3 (and never will), same goes for Oblivion. Half-Life 2 was great but really nothing like what OOT was back then.

I suppose that by reffering to OoT as a great game you refer to the fact that it is the highest scoring game on GR and MC. So by this logic the obvious choice would be GTA IV. The people who say MGS4 should note that GS is one of the only sites that praised this game to zenith.
