@Gue1:
That first Gran Turismo was mind boggling. Not just an impact on videogames but car culture as well. Who would have thought a videogame would get people into the car scene.

Who is everybody? They are wrong.
Sony owns Naughty Dog since 2001 (before ND released Jak & Daxter).
Dunno, but I distinctly recall people saying ND and Insomniac were 2nd party in the PS1 and PS2 days. Damn me for not checking the facts :p
But a studio like Insomniac isn't owned by Sony right ?
And they still made exclusives for Playstation for 3 generations. Only to come out with a multiplat and Xbone exclusive recently. Now going back with a Playstation exclusive with Ratchet and Clank.
I would say that's second party.
A studio like Rare was second party, not owned by nintendo, still made exclusives for Nintendo. Only to be bought by MS so they are first party now.
The thing is: it's no use being second party anymore. Game development costs have gone way up and you're better off developing your games for as many systems as possible. So the second party term has faded a bit.
Could be that Naughty Dog wasn't owned by Sony before and now is. I can't say for sure.
I've explained this before...I know certain people dislike reading giant posts. So, while I have a ton of information, I'm going to make this BRIEF. Hopefully I still manage to explain this adequately avoiding a lengthy quote chain.
There is second party developers, but there is no such thing as a second party game.
When a product is made it is either 1st party or 3rd party.
Ex: If Konami, Activision, EA, or Capcom outsource a to another developer they don't own (example Konami's recent Castlevania's or Capcom's recent Bionic Commando releases), that game created is still considered Konami, Activision, EA, or Capcom game when it's made, despite the fact the game wasn't made by those companies.
Developers are either hired to make a first party game, hired to help with a 1st party game, or hired to make a 3rd party game (for Capcom for instance). Some developers are owned by the publishers.
If Sony, Nintendo, Sega, or M$ decide to outsource (recent example is new Xbone unreleased Phantom Dust was being outsourced now devs have shut down controversy), again that final product when released is 1st party.
So there are first, second and third party studios.
But there are only first and third party games.
Ok, that makes sense. Since the second party games are still published by Sony/MS/Nintendo.
It's like Panzer Dragoon... but with mechs... and in space. I don't know about any of you, but that spells WIN in my book. :D
I never knew this was a 1st party game.
It's one of the best looking PS1 games IMO.
Really loved this game but I never had the skill to get to the later stages.

YES!!! Dude, awesome. That's exactly it right on 1st and 3rd party games. :)
Also, while Insomniac was independent, Naughty Dog wasn't....just a heads up. :P
EDIT: With regards to ND and Insom, I meant in that time frame you specified (PS2-PS3 days)

Second party seems to be a dying breed. All the rage these days is buying exclusives which is like the new second party...

I feel you are onto something...:P
Why are people listing Crash and Spyro which were never Sony IPS and were made when ND was not a FP studios (insoniac was never one either)
Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Twisted Metal: Black, The Last of Us, Ratchet and Clank 2, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Twisted Metal 2, Legend of Dragoon, SOCOM 2, Syphon Filter, Champions of Norrath, Infamous, Demon's Souls, or Uncharted 2 for me.
I'll just say Sly Cooper since it's different and won't get a vote. My heart also sings many praises to SOTC.
Everyone keeps saying Naughty are 2nd party ? So which is it ?
Patapon or God of War series for me
Who is everybody? They are wrong.

Technically Sly Cooper wasn't a FP game either until 2011. Since Sly cooper 1-3 were made before then not sure they would count UNLESS you brought the collection then sure.
To be honest,I don't have much experience with Playstation consoles, but out of the games I have played,Syphon Filter was one of my favorites.
@Gue1:

Yeah, Gran Turismo probably had the biggest impact. It's still the best-selling first-party Sony franchise to this day.

You are mistaken again.
There are only 1st party games and 3rd party games.
There are 1st party, 2nd party, and 3rd party developers.
Don't get the two confused (games and developers).
I just got done explaining this above to another user, Furthermore, I've explained this many times over the years. It's REAL simple and it's not debatable. It's a fact of the industry that newcomers just don't seem to grasp as I've learned over the many years here.
Sly Cooper was always a 1st party game. The fact the dev (Sucker Punch) was acquired later doesn't change the product they were contracted to make as a second party before becoming a 1st party. If it makes you feel better, I own the PS3 HD collection as well.
Shadow of the Colossus, Sly Cooper, Jak & Dexter and God of War. Ico is good too. I'll go with SotC.
I miss Sony PS2 era. :(
Honestly I don't really know, I want to include Demon's Souls because SCEJ worked with From, but at the end of the day it's From's game. Guess it's an easy win for TLOU then, one of my top ten games last gen.
Interesting discussion but it's hard to form an opinion, i'd say The Last of Us but despite how brilliant that game is, as i've always called the the Ps3's Ocarina of Time, i'm still not comfortable saying its the best inhouse playstation exclusive, Shadow of the Colossus, Gran Turismo, Uncharted... So many others.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (the version with the better camera), although I don't know if that counts as first party.
If that doesn't count as first party, then I'd have to say Crash Bandicoot 2.
Most of their stuff ends up being pretty mediocre including their acclaimed offerings, but I have yet to play the Team Ico games or Demon Souls which would probably end up being pretty good.
Having said that, I'm going to go with the Last of Us. That game is quality and despite it having a few tropes that I hate from Uncharted 2, it handles story far better, has gameplay that is actually enjoyable and rewarding, and it feels like what I do actually matters most of the time.
I'm also quite a fan of the inFAMOUS games.
But a studio like Insomniac isn't owned by Sony right ?

Suckerpunch owned the Ip the contract with Sony said nothing about the game. The game was a 2nd party game and a 2nd party IP, it was not a FP ip, use your brain. Sly 2 came out, Sony did not own Sly cooper. They had a deal to support SP, however SP did not hand the whole 100% of the Ip to sony and work on it due to the contract. That's not what the contract was.
This is as dumb as saying that because Universal and Sony had a marketing partnership that Crash was a FP game, but it wasn't.
