A link to the past. I don't like any of the 3rd person ones. I also have a special place for Zelda 2, as a kid it felt mysterious to me.
LTTP, not even debatable.
Even though I don't care to "best" a few games in the series, I tend to agree. Link to the Past is perfectly playable to this day. It has done the most for the series out of any other entry. It introduced the most memorable musical themes which continually get reused. The visuals have stood the test of time and have become cultural icons. It introduced the most item mechanics. The game guides the player but doesn't tell them where to go--and does so in an open ended way.
Link to the Past simply exhibits no faults.
A Link to the Past.
Dat music.
Link Between Worlds blew my mind with the redone stuff. Especially this one...
I used to be all over the place with my answer to this, but after my Zelda marathon last year, LttP comes out on top, easily.
All fun and no filler bullshit. It's all the best aspects of the series boiled down into the purest Zelda experience.
I hate the 3D ones.
The Minish Cap, A Link Between Worlds, A Link to the Past, and Links Awakening are my favorite.
@sammyjenkis898: ;) That's right! One of my favorite games of all time too, alongside Final Fantasy XII.
I know, I'm weird.
Hey, both of those games are legit and FFXII is beast.
Almost any Zelda is a good Zelda though. Out of the 3D titles, TP is one of my favorites.

Yeah, I'm working my way through the remainder of the Zelda games I haven't beaten currently, only five left, and there isn't a single one that I've not enjoyed though Zelda 2 is still coming... But Twilight Princess is the one that resonated with me best. It truly felt like an epic to me which is what I wanted from the game.
Twilight Princess is a chore to get through and Skyward Sword is even worse.
@Zassimick:
Man, I never actually beat Zelda 2. Nintendo just sucked at sequels back then. I was so damn disappointed when that game came out. Good luck with it lol.

The first few hours were grade A bullshit, but after the "tutorial" nonsense, I found it to be a fun game.
all the smart people vote for Majora's Mask
jk, I know it's a flawed gem. It's a special game to me.
And btw I like ALBW better than LTTP
Ugh Zelda 2, such a mess of a game.
Wouldn't have been so bad if you weren't returned to the beginning at game over, and didn't fucking lose exp as well. Would have been nice to have a reliable projectile or a better magic selection. The last dungeon is also seriously one of the worst things ever.
A link to the past. Best 2D game ever made (IMO), best Zelda game ever made, timeless classic along with other gaming legends. In all honesty though, most Zelda games are of high quality. Zelda OOT and MM were ahead of their time when they released compared to other console games of the same era. You could say they were the quintessential example of production value and game polish for their time. Zelda is a top franchise for a reason. I wish Nintendo would get that kind of ambition back and blow us away with future Zelda games.
I'd say the best overall is A Link to the Past. The most enjoyable entry to play over and over again is Skyward Sword though. That game is just plain FUN.

It will be so satisfying completing that game. I have always dreaded it, knowing the consensus is that it's just not very good. But I shall be victorious!
Then I'll come back to this thread and say it's my favorite.

I remember AVGN unwittingly beating it with the Powerglove. lol
Ocarina of Time. 1st game to introduce z-targeting, which changed everything. First game when riding a horse actually felt like riding a horse. Mini games that would be awesome by themselves. Fishing, archery, horseback archery, rc bombs, etc.. Plus a great story and dungeon design. I see that LttP is winning here though. It's a great choice too. Played every Zelda at launch. Nothing compares to the first time I played Ocarina. OoT and MM are splitting the vote even though MM is pretty much an expansion of OoT.
Going to be the odd one out here, I would say "The Legend of Zelda"
it was the first game in the series I ever playied (well duh). and every other top Down Zelda game always felt like an advancement of that, but at the same time, just an advancement of the Foundation that was LoZ, I suppose it is natural when it was the first one I playied.
I never really cared that much for the 3D ones, but have playied most of the LoZ games. Might have missed the one truely good 3D Zelda game though :\ (Majora's Mask)
It's a tie for me between A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. I love both games
Here's one of the tie breakers for me: I have no issue with the framerate in Ocarina of time, most of the time. However, the one area it does affect play imo--or could benefit from being a tad higher--is the first person aiming. I'll have to throw the cart in next time I'm by the N64. It has been a LONG time since I've played the N64 one.......plus I recently got a production monitor which greatly benefits N64 visuals.
For me, Ocarina of Time, though if Link To the Past wins this popularity contest that too is also worthy of the title.

I thought Zelda 2 was awesome, never got why people dislike it so much.
Anyways for me it's a toss-up between Ocarina of Time and a Link to the Past. I don't think I've played any Zelda games beyond Windwaker, so wouldn't be able to compare it the Wii Zelda games.
