[QUOTE="ArchoNils2"]DLC usually has their own budget and wouldn't be part of the final game if it wasn't for DLC. Sure you can say "we never know", but I'm pretty sure we would see about the same content in our games even if there isn't DLC, but instead of DLC we would see more expansion packs. Oh and I take DLC any day over re-releasing the same game with a few extras like Copcom likes to do it. Seriously, only RE5 gold is Move compatible? 3 versions of Street Fighter 4? wthDarsander
I would take DLC over re-releases as well. And on paper, I would had also taken DLC over expansions, but look Expansion: a new single player story mode, a bunch of new maps, new characters/armies to play with and old ones get updates and enw weapons. $20-$40 vs $10 for several batches of maps (used to be given away for free in patches as a 'thank you for still playing our game'. $5-15 for new each new character or army. $1-5 for different attires for each character $20-$40 for a new story a new story mode.

Sure it's more expensive if you want everything, but usually there's always stuff you don't really care about. I can see the devs / publisher trying to cash in on DLC, especially to compensate used game sales. IMO the price of new games should be lowered and they should focus more on those micro transactions. I'm actually fine with stuff like online passes. The best added content are still mods, to bad the consoles do not support something like that :S

You had no idea how close you made me explode. I think the biggest scam catching on right now are free to play games. You can play for free and be a second class citizen to the paying players. The paying players usually pay $20+ a month for the game they love forever, vs everyone buying the game once and everyone being equal with no one being milked. Sorry to make a big generalization but from what I see in off topic the majority of you are left wing people who live in socialist countries. In your perfect world everyone would be equal, right? Why are you actively supporting the practices that make video games unfair, a field of entertainment where everyone can be equal? We all hate it when people luckier to be born in rich and powerful family get their way over us, why the hell would you support it in our entertainment, our escape, our paradise?

So how long to you play those $60 games? 3 months? Seriously? Even if there are games that cost you $20 a month to play properly, it's probably still less expensive than a $60 game (Personally I play them for about a week, not much more). Also this way the devs and publishers get more money and do not lose a lot to retailers.

But that wasn't my point at all: All I'm saying is that I actually like the idea of DLC, especially because you directly support the devs and publishers. I would be perfectly fine with a $40 game with DLC worth $60 where I can chose if I want any or if I want everything. Just check out Disgaea 3, it has tons of DLC, but you decide which characters you actually want. It's up to you wheter you want just one character or if you want all of them for $50. Also I wasn't talking about MP at all.

Dunno what this had to do with my country or my political standpoint

Nothing really, If my generalization for certain people reading this fits I just wanted to point out an interesting fact they would be willing to pay higher taxes and maybe sacrifice certain freedoms in hopes their country can keep them safe and everyone has a free shot in life. Yet in a fictional world, where everything can be fair, they're willing to be treated as second class if ti means they can play a game for less or for free. I just don't get it at all. :? then again, I am supposedly a self proclaim full supporter of capitalism, yet here I am with this thread. :P I was just mainly upset LustForSoul's attitude that we shouldn't complain about anything, ever, and should be just be happy with what we're given.

Three things:

Constant game installs, updates, and glitches.

Pre-orders and DLC that gives players either an unfair advantage or are essential to a games story. I also hate the fact it splits players up in online games with smaller user bases.

Hermits have came out of their basements. This is the first gen where they realize that consoles are a threat to them. Developers do not see them as a big source of income, the pirating has caught up with them, and the same develpoers who used to rely on them have abandoned them over night. So game forums where the Nintendo/Sega and Microsoft/Sony battles are not fun anymore. Instead we get a few minutes to haggle each other before we have to start hearing the complaining while trying to explain why we either do not care or admitting that they are right with the hopes the topic can live through the interuption.

I chose the mega publishers buying out option by process of elimination. I love Motion controls and hope they are used WELL in future gaming systems (But I keep my Wii games because I'm not holding my breath). Pre-Ordering nabbing you exclusive content doesn't seem like much more than incentive. By Mainstream audience focus, I assumed you meant casuals and their invasion of online play, and there is nothing wrong with that, I probably could've told you that would happen years ago. And that left DLC and the option I chose. And... DLC is pretty evil, but I chose the other one.

The whole "trying to appeal to a larger audience". They try to act like last gen never existed and all of those franchised would never sell now like all of the gamers who were alive "way back then" are all dead or something. I know a lot of gamers are young these days but most of them are COD buddies and would never look at half of these games anyway. Meanwhile you have some that would and would even go back and get the previous titles.

DLC. The whole online updating and downloading thing only encouraged developers to be lazy and release a broken game because they could just patch it a little later.

DLC when it was obviously taken out of the game. Some games do DLC very well, such as Borderlands for example. Others are hit or miss (Mass Effect 2) and some just do it terribly (Capcom games, CoD). And Kinect, since that's ALL MS seems to focus on. If they did Kinect along with doing more for the traditional Xbox fans than it wouldn't be so bad. Oh and exclusive content for one system but not for the other *coughsonycough* That goes for timed exclusive as well *coughmicrosoftcough*

The sheer amount of casualization and the constant attempts to try to appeal to the "broader masses". On top of that I feel most games don't have staying power like last gen.

I don't know, this generation has been bloody fantastic, honestly.

Any complaint I can think of is mitigated by some other positive factor; sure, there's been some DLC abuse, but there's also been some really good post-release content (like with New Vegas, for example) that actually held good value for me.

And yes, many companies have been altering there franchise formulas to appeal to new audiences, and several series have suffered for it, but there are plenty of games that are pushing new limits within their genres, both in and out of the mainstream.

Spinter Cell was murdered, but Fallout was revived, and ****ing wonderfully.

Crytek pissed themselves and collapsed, but Irrational provided us with one of the greatest games of all time.

Rockstar went even further downhill, but smaller devs gave us Crackdown and Just Cause 2.

BioWare ****ed everyone sideways with the terrible Dragon Age series, but also put out Mass Effect, which is pretty good.

Capcom stepped away from horror altogether, but Frictional Games gave us a terrifying genre masterpiece.

-

So yeah, there's a good at least for every bad, and plenty more besides.

DLC, no, not proper DLC like Undead Nightmare in fact, i think that is pretty cool when done right, i'm talking about Capcom (and many others) twisted idea of DLC (aka as Disk Loked Content).

For me so far its the importance the big three have put on motion controls, not that I think the technology is worthless, but its been used as cash in only. Even the Wii's highest rated games only use light implimentation with the motion controls... That and the unfinished game. Its irritating buying an unfinished game and waiting for a patch... LOOKING AT YOU FALLOUT NEW VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing I'm annoyed by most this generation are rabid fanboys who defend a system like it's a sports team or something. I don't remember Sega and Nintendo fans going at it like this back in the 16-bit era. We just enjoyed all the great games we were able to play. As for a tangible aspect, it's gotta be locked material on game disks. I don't mind paying for DLC as long as I actually have to download something substantial, not a 250kb unlock key.

I would agree that the offensive content is pretty well curbed in system wars, its the juvenile outlook on things that gets me scratching my head at times.

The worst part about this gen is all of the complainers, especially the ones who say "games were dumbed down". Newsflash, SP has never taken intelligence especially in the past and MP will only take as much intelligence as the people playing, whether you're playing ARMA or MW2.

I'd say the time and money inested in a single game, and the combination of entitled gamers, its caused a lot of hostility between the publishers and core market, games cost more to produce because there is more quality there, but gamers don't feel they need to pay any more and are entitled to all teh DLC that the dev's make.

Activision, EA, Ubisoft, THQ, Capcom, Sony Computer Entertainment, and Microsoft all going full evil and crapping in the face of gamers everywhere with their online passes, DLC, on-disc DLC, "Game of the Year Editions", subscription fees, endless sequels and remakes, microtransactions, phasing out local multiplayer, super restrictive DRM... I feel like I'm being nickel-and-dimed at every opportunity and I'm sick of it.

Yeah, that's a big one. All of the lamenting about outdated game mechanics is pretty annoying. Not that I don't miss the good old days, they just weren't as good as some people make them out to be.

Well I personally love this gen. The only thing that sucks is the lack of JRPG's on consoles. It's sad to see them diminish, but at least that means my PSP isn't a dust collector lol.

DLC that is already on the disc or that has been obviously taken out of the main game (I'm looking at you Assassin's Creed 2). Nothing is more aggravating than paying $15 for DLC than seeing a 100kb "unlock". That's DLC that was already on the disc.
