In 10 years when we look back at gaming and the industry has moved on and become something different from what it is today, what will be the defining game that this generation offered....

It may not be your favorite game

It may not be the game with the best graphics

It may not be the game with the most recognizalbe character...

What say you to the game that will be remembered for its "wow" factor and timeless mystique, its ability to tap into the best that this generation has offered.

Pretty much this, but the game that defined the 360 for me this gen was Gears.

But all this really boils down to is preference.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are certainty my favorite games this gen... maybe ever. They advanced story telling in games by leaps and are incredibly interactive for RPG's. I just don't know if they've met a broad enough market for people to look back in 10 years and say they were the defining games of the generation... Easily my favorites however.

The only one that really springs to mind as being remembered far into the future is Heavy Rain; it's done things very few have done before, it's basically an interactive movie and the graphics are almost unsurpassed. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a truckload of copycat games next gen.

Heavy Rain. I don't care if I'm not a gamer, my first playthrough had me more immersed than any other game I've played this gen. The fact that this has been one of the few truly successful forays into this kind of storytelling hasme excited to see what the future for the genre brings.

Uncharted 2 for me because I feel that it's the game that really represents what this gen of games is capable of pulling off. Developers see the effort that went into producing an amazing like that and now they are designing their games more carefully in order to pull off that cinematic experience, incredible polish, and hook the player.

Super Mario Galaxy

Best 3D platformer to date

Near flawless motion controls - it set the bar, and hasn't been broken yet

And on top of that it's the highest rated game this gen.

One cannot really apply gens to a PC because they are repetitively improving, therefore I think saying Crysis is gen defining isn't justified.

Why running when you know it is the truth.

This generation as in now not 1986

This Generation as in Wii, 360, and PS3.

Therefore Super Mario Galaxy which is in 60 Frames Per Second and has one of the best visuals (which will probably be Timeless) of any game thus far IS NEXT GEN and was not possible in 1986 except for Super Mario Bros. Which is still today one of the best games of all time.

It doesn't matter if it's great or not, it's incredibly unique in a world where games are grouped as shooters, puzzle platformer, etc. My point is that it could have spawned an entirely new genre of games just when we thought they were all taken. Doom was unique at the height of it's days until copycat games came out, now they're all over the place.

No, it's still Mario collecting stars, just like every other Mario game. The first Mario was timeless, the 18th or whatever this one is, will most likely be forgotton until they remake it. (You know they will)

Heavy Rain is pretty amazing, but not so much as a game. When you play Heavy Rain you're not looking for the best gameplay like you are in Halo or God of War 3, you get this intense, interactive and cinematic experience that is like nothing else on the scene.

In a way,HR almost revoltionized games for me. Games have really turned toward a more story driven experience over the course of the past gen, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Uncharted 2 show this, but then Heavy Rain came a long and just pushed it to a new level. There's no doubt in my mind that Heavy Rain just planted a timebob for a genre, set to go off around the start of the next gen, and I'm really excited to see where it goes.

Anyway, You should definitely rent the game at a friend who has a PS3's house and kick it over there so you can at least play it.

Wii Sports. It is the game that is most representative of the move to new control schemes and the expansion of the gaming market. Many years from now, many gamers will not know MW2 or UC2, or be confused as to which generation these games belonged, exactly. Wii Sports is singular - an easy landmark by which every gamer (past, current, and future) can mark their calendar and define this generation for years to come.

Demon's Souls defines what a video game should be during this generation. Modern Warfare is what this generation currently is, and will later be, defined by, or rather, recognized for. Super Mario Galaxy...

Agreed, it's simply inarguable that SM64 is the better game. Even with the elevated standards of the day, Super Mario Galaxy managed to average a 97 on Metacritic while SM64 garnered an outstanding 93. Obviously critics aren't everything, but it's an indication of how the game so rapidly evolved from the original that it managed to completely outdo itself.

In the words of MEGamers "Mario Galaxy is one of the games you will talking about in 20 years, saying 'yes I played that one on my Wii'."

No, it's still Mario collecting stars, just like every other Mario game. The first Mario was timeless, the 18th or whatever this one is, will most likely be forgotton until they remake it. (You know they will)

Respawn-d

Is so obvious you haven't played the game if you think that is only another collecting star game, is like saying Uncharted 2 is just another game with guns.

I dare you to find a game with the concept of SMG so well realized, and with such a magnificent level design.

Your right its collecting stars while running around little worlds trying to save the princess.

Didn't answer my question

Just saying.
