Modern Warfare 2. Yes, I'm serious. Halo 2 was popular in MP, but MW and MW2 are just absolute monsters, and it really is the game that brought MP to the masses. The same argument could be made in favor of World of Warcraft - EverQuest may have been first, but WoW has become a part of our culture (sort of the "you know you've made it when South Park mocks you" rule). Personally? For me, the game that truly defines this generation is Grand Theft Auto IV. It's the game that truly could not have been done before this generation (on consoles, anyway).lowe0
Funny cus Halo 3 is still at the top of the most played xbox live game, almost 3 years on.

the last gen where you could name 1 game that defined that gen was the 8-bit gen with Super Mario

since then? impossible

88mphSlayer
I respectfully beg to differ. Mario 64 could easily be argued as the flagship game that ushered in 3d gaming and defined the generation, likewise the same could be said of GTA3 and its massive scope.... not impossible, but opinionated for sure.

Metal Gear Solid 4 or Super Mario Galaxy. Little Big Planet is the most fun though.

GeOW...no doubt. Anyone who says otherwise is either blind or a fanboy. GeOW made the biggest impact on this gen than any other game.

88mphSlayer

i dunno, i think COD4, love it or hate it, made the biggest splash this gen

but you're right in that Gears started a trend of streamlining controls, post-apocalyptic settings and made third person shooters popular

With Gears, its as if they nearly perfected a fresh (not original) but fresh style of gameplay... I know for me, I'd much rather play the over the shoulder first person view with cover combat than a straight up FPS any day...

Modern Warfare 2.

90% hype, 10% effort. And unfortunately consumers gobble it right up.

Well, the consumers should gobble up whatever they think they'll have fun with, not what meets certain people's standards of quality. Why shouldn't consumers buy the sequel to a game they loved?

I don't think that 10% figure is very fair.

Sure, IW got complacent and may have gotten it into their head that they don't need to polish their game, but 10% just seems a little bit extreme.

Not to mention they made cover very popular, heck most TPS's and some FPS's now a days have a cover system.

It sounds more to me, especially after the destruction of IW, like IW was trying to get a game out before a deadline to retain some hold over the IP... I dont dislike MW2 in the least, actually I really like the SP. The MP is not as good as COD4, but yeah saying little effort went in to making that game is sad.

Gears of War; it was not only the first universally acclaimed game of the current generation, it set a new standard in graphical and gameplay refinement for consoles. There are certainly better games out there, but before Gears of War most people didn't think the 360/PS3 offered a significant enough improvement over last-generation's graphics to warrant upgrading.

Wii Sports. Seriously.

LegendofNerd

I really don't see how it can be anything other than Wii Sports, honestly. This generation will be known as the generation motion sensing and its variants became mainstream, and it's almost entirely thanks to this game.

In 10 years when we look back at gaming and the industry has moved on and become something different from what it is today, what will be the defining game that this generation offered....

It may not be your favorite game

It may not be the game with the best graphics

It may not be the game with the most recognizalbe character...

What say you to the game that will be remembered for its "wow" factor and timeless mystique, its ability to tap into the best that this generation has offered.

TheEroica
Gears, after that game came out, all developers started to include that stupid cover combat, a great idea, sadly very overused

Super Mario Galaxy

Best 3D platformer to date

Near flawless motion controls - it set the bar, and hasn't been broken yet

And on top of that it's the highest rated game this gen.

brennan7777

highest rated where?

Actually Metacritic list SMG's average score at 97 while UC2's is 96

I mario game cannot be a generations defining game. Mario defined the 80s. It doesnt matter ho many changes they make your still playing as mario saving the princess. A defining game needs to sum up an entire generation, be good, and have more then just gameplay.

Uncharted 2 is my choice as it looks at all the things done right in tps this gen, refines them, improves them and then mergegs them together. It also has amzing graphics showing how this gen was a big jump for consoles into HD plus it has an amazing story (something all games try to have but so many fail).

Gears of War - The Cover mechanic.

Wii Sports - The dominance of casuals and motion controls.

It's a shame, because I hate those games

What rule says it can't?

At this point if people don't understand why this is the case, there is no point even bothering with them.

Says who? Even then, SMG is amazingly rounded.

This is ironic, the game that borrows heavily is the one that is suppose to define the generation. How incredibly predictable. ( this isn't a knock to those who picked U2 even if I disagree)

The defining game of this generation is definitely Plants Vs. Zombies. There naver has been and never will be a better combination than plants and zombies. Is there anything better than zombies and plants? If there is, I don't want to know anything about it.

A lot of games come to mind: Gears of War, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Crysis, Halo 3.

If you look at those games you'd realize they have done something exceptional to show what games can do from technological advancements, narrative techniques and the ability to appeal and move broader audiences. I believe that some of those games will still be talked about in the next decade as they are shaping the future of the industry, whether we like it or not.

I'm being as objective as I can, so don't be too hard on me if you disagree :)

Generation Defining game?
Definatly either of the CoD: Modern Warfare games.

CoD4 was i guess preaty interesting (altough I cant see why evreyone was going nuts over it, with Battlefield 2 having all the same core mechanics 2 years earlier), but CoD6 isnt new enough for me.

For me, right now the game that defines this gen is Battlefield Bad Company 2.

No mario cannot define the gen becasue like I saidMario defined the 80s. It doesnt matter how many changes they make your stillplaying as mario saving the princess. The game isnt even in HD so how can it define the HD era?

Yes because everything good about the gen can be found in uncharted 2 more refined. A cover system like in geow, the ability to climb like infamous and AC, amazing graphics like kz2, stealth kills like mgs, lots of colour like nintendo games, exploration through diff parts of the world like tomb raider. A perfect story, fun addicting mutiplayer like.....(too many games to list), the fact that all games are recorded and can be uploaded to youtube (halo 3 had something similar). You can even find elements of almost every gen in this game.

This game defines this gen
