I would say mine is RPGs followed by action adventure at a close second. A good RPG is amazing, it has great gameplay, side content, great story, characters and an amazing world. But a bad RPG can suck and be absolutely boring. Action Adventure games are great because there isn't a ton of build up and things go through fluidly. That is, a good action adventure game. In recent years, this genre has been getting too much bloat and busy work. What about you, SW? What is your number 1 favorite game genre?

Real time strategy when it works. I suck at most of them, but I'm having a blast with Starship Troopers: terran command.

Probably JRPG’s although fighting games and action/adventure are right up there as well.

I've always preferred action adventures over anything else, but some RPG's are real masterpieces like The Witcher 3. I'll say Action Adventure for now.

Single player FPS games either old school or narrative driven are my fav. or First person games in general.

also like third person action games if done well but most of them are cinematic movie games.

@R4gn4r0k: Mafia as well! I can't speak for Mafia 1 remaster but Mafia 2 remaster seemed unplayable on PS5. I had to turn it off on the opening scene because of the FPS.

Games where you can build really cool stuff (Like Minecraft, Starbound, Trove, Enshrouded, Conan Exiles, No Man's Sky).

I love these games because you get to "make your own fun." I am a creative type so that just does it for me.

Hack'n'Slash or "3rd person action games" ala DMC/Bayonetta/Ninja Gaiden. Doing "hard" way before Souls did

Man... I like so many, but I guess I have to go with survival or mmo. Most online multiplayer genres are at or near the top, but I love RPGs, Cards, and Strategy as well. I guess I'll just say everything except RTS and Mobas.

I like factory builders, at least for the past few years they've probably taken up 70% of my gaming time.

Action and/or RPG's are a close second.

A good RTS is really something special. There was a shift many years ago where the mentality seemed to be "RTS are for multiplayer, singleplayer is an afterthought" and that sort of killed the genre for me. But occasionally we get a really good, story-driven RTS and it's simply wonderful.

World in Conflict, WH40K: Dawn of War 1 and 2, Command and Conquer, Homeworld series (haven't tried the third one, but 1, 2, Cataclysm, and Deserts of Kharak were great), and so on. Even Supreme Commander's skirmish mode was a lot of fun, mostly because of the base-building and defenses you could build.

Starship Troopers Terran Command is excellent, really enjoyed that one.

@mrbojangles25: Terran command received a couple of expansions so far. One's on a lava planet and now the second, Urban Assault, takes place almost entirely in a city and has these new cop focussed units.

There's one unit, with riot shields, and they take this form of a Roman testudo shield formation. It's a really cool and unique unit.

But yeah this second expansion is really great, I'm close to beating it.

I myself have not played factory games though I was thinking of getting back into theme park/ theme hospital games. I should definitely add factory games to the list!

Have you tried Mafia 3? It's a really good game and I think it has a cool setting with it being in the 60s

They added races and I just loved driving those 60s cars around tracks.

JRPG is my fav genre I don't mind turn based, action or hybrid. Next is grand strategy/4x sim and... farming game. I love farming games even though I tend to never reach final upgrades for anything in game I enjoyed the chill aspects of the genre its a stress reliever.

I liked RPG/JRPGs but seems over the years this stuff has slowed down and is lacking, at least to me.
I'm trying out a mix of everything until the next big thing comes out.

@mrbojangles25: your rts taste is exactly the same as mine.

I specially loved cataclysm (now they call it homeworld emergence due to copy rights). They never remastered it and people forgot about it, but it was so good!

Soulsborne. When Demons Souls released on the ps3, it made me feel like a kid again, exploring the dungeons and needing to learn enemy patterns in order to defeat them. It took old school difficulty and mashed it with 3d action combat perfectly. It's only gotten better since then with both Bloodborne and Elden Ring.

These days I really love a great roguelite, but I've always had a soft spot for the stealth genre. I'd love to see it make a bit of a comeback and not in an Assassin's Creed sort of way either.

Action.

It's the broadest genre, encompassing a bunch of sub-genres:

  • Battle royale
  • Brawlers (i.e. beat 'em up, hack & slash)
  • Fighting games
  • Maze games
  • Platformers
  • Rhythm games
  • Shooters (i.e. FPS, light gun, rail shooter, run & gun, shmup, TPS)

Platformers. While Sonic and Mega Man are at the top for me, there are still many others that I enjoy, as well as those that I am at least willing to give a shot with.

2D beat 'em ups is right there for me too, but Streets of Rage is doing 99% of the heavy lifting along with once in a blue moon releases like Guardian Heroes and Chronicles Mystara. It's so easy to do beat 'em ups wrong, but they're all at least easy to pick up and play with a friend, which is why I like the genre so much.

It used to be RPGs but i'm having a bit of an existential crisis around them at the moment. A lot of the times a game has an RPG system implemented and i just think "Why?". I haven't played an RPG in a long time where levelling up, getting new loot and putting points in stats felt really rewarding. More and more: these systems just seem to get in the way of the fun.

3d puzzle games: Portal, Antichamber, The Talos Principle etc.

Soulsborne games by From Software soullikes by other developers just aren't as good. Black Myth Wukong might change this.

Yeah i do like a good action game.

I just finished Outcast: A new beginning. Overall I enjoyed it but it has an upgrade system that locks the users abilities until they pay for them (with in game currencies you earn: Thankfully no microtransactions are in the game). So things like sliding around and flight are blocked from the player for a while (quite a while in case of flight). Why? What's the upshot of doing that? It's just an unnecessary barrier to the fun (and flying and sliding into enemies, tripping them up, is quite enjoyable).

They did have the makings of a good RPGLite system for the weapons: Where you can collect modules then configure your weapons with those modules. But each weapon can only hold a few modules. So the player needs to make a choice on what to use. But it's not very well implemented and the content isn't really there to make the player think how they will configure their weapons. Just pick what you like and have at it.

Just speaking about RPGs in general: It all then becomes about "Builds" to the point where the game is balanced under the assumption that the player has read up on a build and is putting points into the necessary stats to make the build. So.....why have all the stats? Why allow the player to put points in the "Wrong" Stats? Why not just select a class and be done with it?

Hard to choose only one genre, but probably turnbased RPG.

Or zombie games, but those can be divided into many different genres.

I don't want to sound alarming, i really don't, but if you don't play, or like action rpg's, something is wrong with you. You should genuinely find what's wrong with you.

Action adventure, I guess. Love stuff like Zelda or Souls games. A large adventure, combat, puzzles, dungeons, bosses. It's like the perfect blend of shit I like.

Also love FPS. Stuff like Metroid Prime that blends FPS and action adventure is awesome stuff.
