From my perspective
Halo 1 brought one of the greatest AI ever made during that time, vehicles that were fun to use and innovative, a superb coop, a open-ended yet linear level structure and backed up with a good story. The lan was also there and provided a very fun multiplayer aspect to it's side. Gameplay wise it brought a great melee system that blew everything else that tried to mimick it away, a new health system and was simply a superb experience despite the naysayers. Lets not forget the orchestral score which was top-notch stuff.
Halo 2 in the otherhand brought a weak campaign IMO and wasnt nearly as fun that Halo brought but thats OK. The multiplayer brought in some great multiplayer features for a console game with stuff like matchmaking with a party system. Play mechanic wise, the gameplay went through some refinements here and there like the no health just regenerating system (Smart move, no need to let the "find the health pack" frustration set-in). Some new weapons were great and very fun to use and brought in the Arbiter which needless to say is a superb character (Think Raiden but done right). The duel-wielding was great fun too. Overall though I felt that there were many other multiplayer games that was superior then that of Halo 2's so needless to say I was very disappointed with Halo 2 despite the fact that it's a quality game.
Halo 3 just "combines" the 2 games. You can call it a reimagining of both Halo games mixed into one and sports some great looking graphics while running in a very smooth framerate. The co-op is there with 4 players this time although I felt that 2 player coop is still better then playing it with 4 (Unless you put on some crazy skulls on, theres no challenge even in legendary). Further customizes the way you can look in multiplayer with different armor parts and more color! It also brought in a satisfying closure to the game and most of all, its just plain fun.
Without saying much its obvious that the original Halo is one of my favorite games, I felt that it did revolutionize the genre and pushed it forward while the other 2 just simply refined the experience.
