What makes the PS2 Ratchet and Clanks so much better than the PS3 ones?

This is a question to the ones who have enjoyed the series at one point. I'm only talking about Tools of Destruction and Crack in Time btw. It's obvious why FFA and A4O are subpar.

I always see people hate on ToD & aCiT and say they're worse than the original trilogy, but no one ever says why. I think they're worse too (Even though they're still great imo) but I have my reasons. I just see people saying they suck compared to the original 3 without ever giving a reason except for some of the people who say they've gotten bored of the formula. I'm just curious.

the fact that platformers were held to a higher standard back then.

nostalgia. people just look back at those ps2 times as some sort of gaming valhalla. a crack in time is as good, if not better than any of the ps2 R&Cs...and that's just being objective.

Without comparing FFA and All 4 One, which was just a lame game, I have no idea. I really liked ToD but my save file corrupted near the end of the game. Crack in Time was really good at first, but Axiom City is just a wall to fun for me. The series never had great combat on the PS3, and then Axiom City dumps loads of combat in cheap situations with dull gray environments.

this hurts it too. between the main series games, the off shoots, psp games and everything in between, gamers are just getting tired of the series. either way, ToD and ACiT are classic R&C games.

Buncha BS. Every single one of them are the same, Deadlocked being the only exception. With that said, Crack in Time is the best one.

Seeing how it's impossible to outdo Up Your Arsenal, it's understandable. Other than the awesome Crack in Time, R&C this gen have been... lackluster.

No, it's not. I played it with my brother, and we both kept wishing for the levels to end. I have no idea how the rest of the series compares since I'm not a fan, but All 4 one is boredom on a disc.

lazerface216

I try to put nostalgia out of the equation when ranking my favorites. Ok, here's the reasons I don't like ToD & aCiT as much as the original 3

ToD

Way too easy.

Annoying, Nefarious wannabe villain (lol)

60% of the weapons become completely obsolete in challenge mode... So bad weapon balance. (Main problem imo, whack weapons in general)

Enemies were just not threatening in general, while in the original 3, they seemed much more violent and quicker to attack. Helped give the old ones some difficulty.

aCiT

Only like 6 planets? r u jk

80% of combat in that game revolved around killing re spawning enemies in a room or area. Seriously, you could just spawn kill most of them. It made it boring.

The older ones had much more clever enemy setups and level design in general.

Even less threatening enemies than ToD for the most part, except maybe that mega aimbot tank thing.

Less weapons than usual but at least all of them were useful.

Worst arena by far imo .....

The respawning enemies and level design kind of killed it for me though. I still though it was a good game but still...

The Ps3 games don't have: Balanced mix of action, adventure, and platfprming. Lack of clever puzzles and stage design. They have more repetion without many unque things making it hard to enjoy to the end, clunkier controls, lacks the clever comedy, lack of unique ideas for puzzles, scenarios and weapons, etc. etc.

CiT is probably my favorite R&C of all time, and ToD certainly stands up there with the PS2 ones. But QFB, A4O, and FFA were bad. Not just not good. They were downright bad games and should never have existed. That brings the average down tremendously, so on average, this generations have been A LOT worse.

A4O is NOTHING like the main series games though, play the collection or a crack in time if you want classic ratchet and clank. i honestly can't believe you've never played a R&C game before. you should be ashamed of yourself. :P

I wouldn't say the platforming was lacking. Well not lacking in quantity and at least. It was too easy though. That platforming never challenged me throughout the Future titles. I mean, they did have some pretty creative platforming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=jDVKMZy1ylo#t=779s http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=gRY2QhhGkpw#t=245s It just wasn't exactly hard...

You should be ashamed of yourself for comparing All 4 One to Streets of Rage. That shit is blasphemy. Streets of Rage? I don't even... what?!

I've thought about buying the collection, but the ps3 stays at my brother's apartment most of the time. I don't know, but the reason I've never gotten into it is because it looks pretty average. The best way I can put it, is if DreamWorks ever made a game, Ratchet and Clank would be it. :P

Wha? If you only played the first one then yeah, it hasn't aged too well. The 2nd and 3rd one are a huge improvement with the controls, and you can actually strafe.

Insomniac isn't dead to me until they make a straight up bad traditional Ratchet and Clank game. It's obvious that they weren't even trying to make FFA and A4O like the others. They have even said that they were experimenting with things for A4O. FFA was a downloadable title so I guess you shouldn't expect much of that. They were pretty much just taking a break from the main series for a while. I just hope their next one blows me away...

lol i knew that would set you off. i did honestly get that vibe off of that game, i enjoyed combining weapons for greater attacks. i enjoy the charm of the series. give the collection a shot, it's cheap and i'm sure you'll find something in there you'll like.

Unfortunately, the series stagnated. Gaming did not. That's why people consider the original series to be best.

Not saying you're wrong as I haven't played the latest stuff... but have you even played the older games?

I find that you hold strong opinions about things you never even tried.  You preach about the newer FF games when you haven't played the old ones.  You dog out Nintendo games every chance you get even though you admit you never played them.  You praise CoD as the best thing ever when you have extremely limited experience with other shooters.

Is your opinion on R&C based on experience?  Or based on "this is all I played so its the best!"?

I've played every single RnC game released to date yes.. from PS2, PSP, PSN, PS3 to PSVita i have played them all even the HD collections and Crack in Time is still imo the best RnC game released to date.. i hope they can do another one like it in the future for PS4.

I've played enough FF games to know and have a bigger picture on how they all are.. i've played FF1,FF2, FF10, 10-2, FF12, FF13 and 13-2.

as for CoD i've played A LOT of FPS's this generation but CoD still by far the best FPS yet! of course imo

He's giving his opinion; not like he was stating it as fact. Do you only care about gamespot scores though? They usually score the R&C games way less than average scores from other sites. They are usually the outlier. The main R&C titles have very good metacritic rankings.

Too many people think games on PS2 were better than on PS3. It's a load of bull!

Finally someone who agrees with me!!! pretty much every game that had a sequel on PS3 ended up getting far better than the PS2 games.

RnC got so much better on PS3 ( Crack in Time ), God of War miles better than it was on PS2 ( God of War 3 ), Sly ( Sly 4 my god they did an amazing job on it, improved so much from the PS2 games ), etc list goes on

I've played enough FF games to know and have a bigger picture on how they all are.. i've played FF1,FF2, FF10, 10-2, FF12, FF13 and 13-2.

You haven't played FFVI,VII or IX? :? No wonder you enjoy XIII

Wut does that mean... VII & XIII were my favorites. I've only played 6 of them though.

Why do you like them better though? I just want someone to list me some reasons why. That's the whole reason I made this topic and no one has done it yet. I'm not hating on anyone's opinion, I just want to know why you think they're better.

Crack in Time?

I can make a list sure:

  • Graphics.. ok im not the one to like a game based on grapchis but Crack in Time man it had some pretty impressive graphics that at some points i would just stand still just to look at the views or how enemies attack/walk lol... the game was seriously beautiful
  • Gameplay, Crack in Time i thought had the best controlls out of any other RnC game, the camera was quick and Ratchet movement were pretty quick ( my main complaint on rnC PS2 games is that Ratchet movement were too slow )... in Crack in Time it was perfect.
  • Trophies.. i like them ... made me play the game for months just to get 100% trophies lol
  • Story, Crack in Time had some seriously good story i thought it was both interesting and emotional ( the ending part )
  • Guns in Crack in Time had an interesting way for level ups and almost all guns were addictive to use.. for the first time i didnt end up using one weapon but i had fun using all of them!

The story was great, I agree, and even though they had less guns than usual, at least all of them were fun to use and were balanced well. I actually think the Dynamo of Destruction is a bit OP, but it's fun though lol. I think the controls were the best also, but the main thing that killed a lot of my enjoyment was the general level structure and how 80% of the combat was based around killing respawning enemies in one area/room, then moving on to the next; as I said in a earlier post.
