Aaron Greenberg: DX12 Will Affect Xbox One Provided Devs Use It, Shares Updates On Fable Legends
Aaron Greenberg, marketing team lead across 1st & 3rd Party Game Studios at Microsoft has confirmed that DirectX 12 will have a substantial affect on PC as well as Xbox One. Responding to a user query on Twitter, Greenberg stated that both platforms will see effects provided developers make use of it.
This is contrary to what Phil Spencer said a few months ago. “It will help developers on Xbox One. It’s not going to be a massive change but will unlock more capability for devs,” Spencer tweeted back in June last year. It seems that progress has been made since then and Xbox One will apparently get affected substantially by the same.
Greenberg also gave a few updates regarding the upcoming Fable Legends. He stated that the game is turning out to be fun. “Yes I have played and game is really fun. Great game over live and top down villain is ideal for pc side,” he said. He also revealed that Fable Legends is in closed beta right now before they expand on it and begin the beta for players.
And finally, he provided a small update on screenshot captures by stating that they are coming ‘soon’.
Well this directly refutes Phil Spencer's earlier statements, like the article points out. Maybe Phil was holding his cards close to his chest and didnt want to tell it all at once like some suggested.
hmmm, but Tormentos said....well he said that but he wouldn't take that bet at the same time. Also he's an idiot so...maybe DX12 WILL yield some really positive results in XB1 games. Cool....

Here comes the high end xbone. RIP ps4, pc and lol wiiu
dx12 will make bringing games from pc to xb1 childs play
meanwhile in ps4 land devs are gonna still have to recode the game specifically for that gpu
dx12 = perfect gateway for pc ---> console
we could see a lot better pc ports and remasters coming to bone while ps4 will get the 30 fps and lazy port ones like both have been getting before xb1 got dx12
Greenberg, seriously? Phil needs to keep this guy and Yusuf Mehdi tied to a leash.
It's time to stop hoping for some big power increase, the PS4 will remain slightly more powerful throughout the whole gen, it's not even that big of a big deal. It's pathetic to see lems say they don't care about power yet go crazy every time there is some small update. Just let it go, it's better to pretend you don't care, even if you do.
Not to this degree. DX has never improved this much in one generation.
Isn't this doing what mantle did back in the day? Are companies tied to archaic, single-core engines still? Do Crytek or Epic give a shit?
I've been completely out of the news cycle lately. Is DX12 going to address XO's memory issues? The ddr3+edram combo seemed to have been a bigger issue than cpu overhead. Has that changed?

Similar to Mantle but with things other than just CPU efficiency. The March GDC seems to be when your questions will be answered (at least to some degree). And yes the main rendering is still single core in DX 11 and below. Hence the crazy increases such as this : DX 29 fps DX 12 120fps
Note : It was not stated what hardware was running the demo.
Well thanks for the update. I have no doubt it will raise the baseline, but I wait for the big guns like Crytek, or even T10 with a new Forza to see the improvements.
That demo shows a nice boost, but it's built for that purpose. I will keep an eye on progress.
Come on dude. They are MS employees. Do you think they wont hype it? I am not saying it will or wont affect X1 but really? Lets hear it from a non MS person before we get all up about it
I believe it. I don't think that Xbox was trying to go for full power when it launched. This along with improved ESRAM updates and the cloud? By the end of the generation Xbox will have some truly incredible stuff. It won't be as incredible as what Nintendo has managed to pull off with the Wii U but it will still be good.
So, microsoft *jazzhands* look it is "teh cloud" before release, lems go crazy, but teh secret sauce, uploading dem graphix to teh cloud, end up being nothing more than multiplayer servers, now microsoft wants people to forget and try to hype their new word *jazzhands* look it is teh directx12! lems go crazy, spread misinformation, ignorance and lies yet again.

ps4? sure along with the many gotys and 10s it will get like last gen, but yeah i will be getting the precious directx12 on my pc, where it will actually matter, not on some low end craptastic console that won't make a difference.
@XboxP3 Hey Phil huge fan. If DX12 requires new hardware for all tweaks to be present how will the X1 have full DX12? Care to elaborate?

@ExploderMouse We knew what DX12 was doing when we built Xbox One.
6:27 PM - 23 Jan 2015
Thats nice but the hardware still needs support which AMD and Nvidia both have for DX12.
Substantial difference does not always mean performance. Perhaps this is why they are not dropping their indie parity clause, if the indie devs use DX12 they get basically two versions in one without much tweaking meaning they can do a launch on PC and Xbox One at the same time then go to PS4 / Wii U later on. If it works that well in practice will be the big question and I guess we will find out soon.
Performance might improve a bit but not much and it will not be doing anything that PS4 can't do because they use the same hardware.
Cows are super scared of DX12 and they should be. For months I have said Phil was just trolling you and now we are getting confirmation that DX12 is a beast.
This is the biggest and most ambitious DX software to date. It goes hand in hand with Win10. My body is ready.
10/10 thread for facts and acknowledging Tornamentoes as an idiot.

lol, nice try, keep poaching those indie developers Sony
Now let's see what King of Lems Phil Spencer has to see.
Yea, really on a game by game basis, difficult to make one statements about impact of DX12, depends on where the bottlenecks are.
Oh.
Damn.
Should we interpret the "Yea", as a "Yes"? But what he is saying that there are cases where it will have an impact, while cows said: "NO IMPACT AT ALL".

No, we've been saying it will have a minimal impact compared to PC because most API benefits are already locked into the Xbone.
In b4 some obscure quote from Tormentos nine months ago.

You speak for all the cows? So you are king cow?
@Krelian-co and @tormentos said no impact at all. Because they are already using the same API as DX12, and nothing will change this, so no impact. But they are much more close minded compared to you.
There's a lot of confusion about DX12. They're both [Spencer and Greenberg] right.
Many of the performance benefits of DX12 will only benefit the PC at this point. As they say, 'bring console level efficiency to the PC'. The Xbox One has that. The feature sets outside of the obvious performance advantages of DX12 however, will likely benefit both.
That is what both sides [cows and lems] get confused about. There is more to DX12 than the features of CPU efficiency or whatever. No, performance won't increase significantly on the X1, it'll be marginal probably, but that isn't where it ends with DX12.
I'm much more excited about it on the PC though. It's what the PC has needed for a while.
Xbot flavour of the month: dx12. What happened to tiled resources? Or cloud?
They are still alive and well, thank you. Crackdown 3 is going to take full advantage of The CLOUD. Have you seen the footage or the demo? Breathtaking.
Yeah that is the reason why its partner AMD stated on early 2013 that there was no DX12 coming,DX12 is an API which started to be build around 2013,before that you can't find any crap about DX12,in fact in 2011 AMD slammed MS DX and basically blame it for draw call problems on PC,and actually stated that developers wanted DX gone.
It's funny,' says AMD's worldwide developer relations manager of its GPU division, Richard Huddy. 'We often have at least ten times as much horsepower as an Xbox 360 or a PS3 in a high-end graphics card, yet it's very clear that the games don't look ten times as good. To a significant extent, that's because, one way or another, for good reasons and bad - mostly good, DirectX is getting in the way.' Huddy says that one of the most common requests he gets from game developers is: 'Make the API go away.'
This is AMD a MS hardware partner slamming DX over head, this ^^ was on 2011.
This ^^ is the reason DX12 exist, because mantle challenge their supremacy in the API with something that was better performing AMD has been complaining for years about DX over head so have other developers,it is the reason why DX12 isn't here work on the xbox started on 2011 by that time there was no DX12 period if there was it would be here by now,it has pass 7 years since DX11 was introduce dude.
Why do we still use Direct3D?
If OpenGL is faster, why is DirectX still the predominant API? It isn’t because of image quality or features: OpenGL 4.0 has all of shaders and tessellators and widgets that DX has. It isn’t because of hardware support: All Nvidia and AMD graphics cards support the latest version of OpenGL along with DirectX.
Really, it all comes down to that crummy old thing we call the network effect — and, of course, monopolistic heft and marketing dollars. DirectX, because it has a cleaner API and better documentation, is easier to learn. More developers using DirectX = more DirectX games = better driver support. This is a vicious loop that again leads to more DX devs, more DX games, and better DX drivers/tools/documentation. Microsoft has relentlessly marketed DirectX, too — and who can forget the release of Windows Vista and Microsoft’s OpenGL smear campaign? Vista’s bundled version of OpenGL was completely crippled, forcing many devs to switch to DirectX.
This ^^ is the real reason why DX12 exist and why still not here is a late response from MS bringing to PC something developer were asking for years, this ^^ last link show you a comparison of Left 4 dead running on linux and windows on the same hardware the code was 20% faster on linux using the same hardware.
DX12 will change nothing is a me to APi that fallow what AMD did already, there are numerous sites which prove this like always DX is late to the party and like has been the case for endless years they always over promise and under deliver.
Oh and the xbox one GPU is GCN which mean hardware support for all features of DX12 are not possible,is not the first time this come to light, and in no part he say yeah it support all hardware feature, knowing what DX12 was doing is not the same as having hardware that support all features, hell they could have openly say yeah the xbox one support all hardware DX12 features and not trying to dance around it with a bland statement like that.

See is this kind of illiterate behavior which make you look like a desperate MS chill.
Where in hell did you read that Mantle was just CPU efficiency.?
That 29 vs 120 FPS are not more fixed because they can't be you don't even know under what parameters that shit was make, any one even sony can make a demo like that to show something that isn't really there, probably horrible optimized code vs great code.
So now they don't claim double frames they claim quadruple frames with DX12..hahahahaaaaaaaaaa

Fu** yea we should.
Are you going to the movies.?
Yea...
In what part of the world is that consider a maybe or negative response.?
The fact he was corner with that question says it all,all of the sudden the we know what DX12 was doing when we build the xbox turn into crap.

I have months telling lemmings that and they will not admit it,i have open quotes from MS it self stating how DX12 will bring console like efficiency to PC and they ignore it in the end people will believe what they want to.
The xbox one is a console so its already efficient, the change the xbox one got had more to do with the xbox one having freeing GPU time CPU time and mature some tools that were not in optimal form on launch.
Supposedly there are hardware features need it to take full use of DX12,the xbox one doesn't have them because is a GCN GPU just like the PS4 one, anything the XBO can do by api the PS4 can do it as well and the other way around the PS4 just do it faster because it has stronger hardware but is basically the same components on each platform but the memory part.

How is that FUD? Greenberg was referring to the upscale so, he is correct.
Why don't you bring up Killzone MP and how Sony lied and is being sued over it? That is FUD.
The question he was asked was about native resolution reason why it say 1080p vs 720p,upscaling all games to 1080p isn't quite the same.

We don't know the extent yet. MS did build the X1 with full knowledge of DX12 and on the basis of it. They knew what they would need. We'll have to wait and see.
Beta test in the future!!!!!!!!! I dont understand why yall dont understand the concept. It is not one GPU on the market like the one inside the X1, forget how many ROPs and CUs for a minute. It is FULLY DX12 , how can be if the new MAXWELL is not DX LEVEL 12 Featured? The reason is the GPU still missing things inside as HBM and DMA. Pascal will bring DX LEVEL 12 featues same as AMD, X1 is making sure everything work before the New Archs come out, hence BETA TEST IN THE FUTURE. It not a coinencidence that a whole NEW ARCH from all the TOP CPU /GPU makers are coming the same time as DX12. Cherry Trail from Intel, Pascal, and AMD are similar on what MS doing with the x1 why? Because X1 is the BETA versions of their New Archs.
And the spreading of FUD continues. MS and Aaron greenberg are just full of shit.
How is that FUD? Greenberg was referring to the upscale so, he is correct.
Why don't you bring up Killzone MP and how Sony lied and is being sued over it? That is FUD.
How is it not? The poster (That you?) was referencing to native resolutions and the answer was a snarky bullshit response from a high level executive.
MS is damage controlling their weakbox one the day it was announced first with tranistor count, adding bandwith in a false way, the cloud, resource titles and now the ominous os updates we get news about every month. Not to forget how Penello was straight up lying and spreading FUD about the PS4 on neogaf. Thats like the definition of FUD. The same FUD spreading they were doing on forums last gen about HD-DVD.
Nice try deflecting tho., Sony got sued for that and have to pay compensation now.
We don't know the extent yet. MS did build the X1 with full knowledge of DX12 and on the basis of it. They knew what they would need. We'll have to wait and see.
DX12 is a new api much newer than the xbox one spec, the xbox one spec were lock in probably in 2011,but even before that the plans were already there,is impossible that MS is building DX12 since 2011 or even less, the quote of phil saying that was weak,he could have give a straight answer yes the xbox one has full DX12 hardware support but he didn't because he CANT say that,he will get in trouble legally if he does and turn out is not true.
DX12 work with GCN some features will not this apply to the PS4 and xbox one and you people should know it by now.

Oh brother here comes the die hard lemming again..hahaha
I have never seen such a big number of morons falling for a piece of advertisement...hahaha
What if they have say Beta test in Jupiter.? would you have fu**ing believe it was.?
The xbox one is a damn GCN already confirmed by MS,is weak and there is nothing that can be done,MS circus trying to convince morons like you that there is some secret sauce will end in tears, when is 2018 and the xbox one continue to trail the PS4 and continue to get inferior games.
With all API upgrades new graphical functions are implemented. The Xbox One won't be able to use all of the new stuff as it won't have the hardware (most DX11 cards don't even have the hardware to support all of the new features) but it'll still get some new things.
It won't be a huge jump, you probably won't even notice a difference. A lot of new function calls will simply be better optimized versions of what they already have so they can free up some resources here and there. Some will enable some new rendering.
Sony tried making the API for the PS4 as close to DX11 as possible so the function calls and whatnot are similar. This is to help with porting. As time goes on Sony too will be upgrading their API. I'm sure they've already had a few small upgrades since launch already.
On the PC side of things, OpenGL is getting a complete rewrite because OpenGL is currently an absolute nightmare to work in. DX12 removes a huge bottleneck on the CPU side and is going to really improve rendering by allowing more drawcalls than before as well as greatly reduce CPU overhead. The only platform really benefiting from DX12 is the PC. The consoles do not have the CPU bottleneck that DX on the PC has had for years.
