emo teen hero characters...waay too much of it. :P
Overall though I'm a big fan of Japanese games. Seems a lot more thought goes in to gameplay mechanics, the world, lore, characters, etc.
1. Fans of Japanese games. They are some of the most overly sensitive and defensive people you'll find on the internet. Sometimes elitist, other times ignorant about non-Japanese games and usually socially inept. After visiting Japan and seeing first hand of how joyful, enthusiastic and awesome they embrace their videogames - and how they share their passion towards visitors/foreigners. It's a travesty that Western gaming communities of people that play Japanese games behave in such a polarizing way. With that in mind, while I like Japanese games, I generally stopped going into discussions about them unless I know/like the person who I am discussing the game with.
Lets double down on this. The notion that lollis, those pervo creepy jrpg animu waifu garbage is somehow indicative of "Japanese culture" as if the concept of an actual grown Japanese adult who finds that shit just as creepy as we do is completely implausible.
this is another gaf inspired thread. Since it was a fun read there I can only imagine how things will turn out here.
So let me start with:
I don't mind a few over-sexualized females here and there, everyone's different after all and that kind does exist, but in recent years it feels like there's not even a single well designed female in most if not all Japanese games.
That they trying so hard to westernize their games , thats my issue years now. Fine example ... Crapcom.
The art style doesn't appeal to me typically. Anime is like a lazy overused method.
This is quite surprising to read coming from you. Anime is quite a broad term.
I'm definitely generalizing, and some games do it really well, but the a-typical big eyes femenine features kind of character design (like say, the Pokemon series) is something I'm not a fan of.
That kind of thing done well, however, can look really good. It's more of a natural progression thing for the most part. A lot of Japanese (and around the world too of course) kids start out drawing anime and if they take it seriously once they're out in the industry their stuff doesn't look like Anime anymore, it looks like genuine anatomically correct art, with slightly big eyes. :P
Here's what I mean:
(KR0NPR1NZ)
VS something like:
(xXxAnimeRockStarxXx)
lol
Well apparently formatting sucks in GS's editor.
I don't like how a lot of games, especially on the consoles, are trying to be oriented more toward western audiences. I prefer turn-based combat. I like the linear story progression. I even like random encounters.

Japanese games suck, IMO. I don't criticize people who like them, though - to each his/her own.
Over sexualization is definitely an issue.
Also the females have weird doll eyes and dont look human
Everything in that video.
Also the lack of PC support and how not all of their games make it overhere. Otherwise Japanese games are generally better than most western games, and pretty much the last bastion for actually good action games and third person shooters.
That was terrible. Oh my god.
Since my thread got sadly locked, I'll have to respond to your post here.
That being said, the potential game list is going to be much larger simply because of the fact that "Western" games include North America and European developers, whereas Japan only gets, well, Japan. Also, your list includes the indie scene; whereas Japan's smaller development teams are regulated to mobiles and handhelds, which generally don't get localized to other countries. But, I'll bite anyway: Resident Evil, Vanquish, MGS4/GZ, Okami, SF IV, Ni No Kuni, Puppeteer, Any Nintendo game (Pikmin to MK to DK etc.),
It's too easy to dismiss Japanese games under "anime" stereotypes, as well as the same can be said of having Western games under certain stereotypes (which was the whole point of my other thread).

Well that's why you can't simply compare Western to Japan because that would be rediculous. I was just playing along.
Japanese games can be easily generalized as having similar features. You can tell when a game is Japanese, without even reading up on who developed it, with the exception of maybe games like Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma, Resident Evil. Basically the only games that try to replicate the western feel are big budget ones that are really going for that as a main objective. Even so there are little things that make it Japanese.
Just like how you can tell when a game is "western". However it's harder to tell from which country a game came from, because... well because globalization.
I've played many jrpg's and they usually have the same negative aspects. Cheesy dialogue, bad plot/badly executed plot and a slow start. Can't say I don't like 'em though, they're often addictive.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be argumentative without a purpose. It's just a little saddening to see people dismiss an entire region's worth of games due to stereotypes.
I still admire many japanese games. The Souls series, Ni no Kuni, Kojima Productions games in general, a few RPGs and tactics games (like Disgaea), Castlevania, Bayonetta, fighting games like Street Fighter and Tekken... maybe FF, though I didn't enjoy XIII all that much.
But most nowadays are indeed over-sexualized and too easy. I avoid those like the plague.
Their industry seems to have degraded or at least stopped innovating as much as the western in general.
It's but a shadow of the level of creativity that brought us what I still find to be the brightest gem of gaming: Xenogears. It's a sad thing, I hope their society in general has just changed focus from gaming to other hobbies, and not that their games are actually representing what's their society'snew usual desires.
Too many to count but I'll say much as I can. And this is Japanese games and not just JRPGs, right?
1. Western games do that a lot too. But you don't have to narrow it down to female bodies, every male body also looks the same. Why? Because artists are taught a pretty repetitive, pronounced version of human anatomy, myself included. People don't like to draw/model fat people because they never learned how. Like how you never see a sculpture of a fat person out of ancient Greece. It's all canonical.
2. I strongly disagree. Japanese character designs are just as good as any, depending on the game, of course. I know that you're probably joining the over sexualization+repetitive anatomy, but seriously, a lot of Japanese games have memorable characters, a lot of them are very unique. There's a reason that so many otakus/JRPG fans put video game characters in their profile pics.

Yes, I am aware that western games do that as well but Japanese games are a lot more more common than the latter. It's more of a personal preference if you don't like drawing overweight or round bodies (pretty much the majority, to much of my dismay).
As for bad design, I was actually referring to their costume designs. Whenever it is female or male, most of them are over the top and ridiculous.
I don't hate Japanese games in general, I grew up with Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Tecmo, Namco, etc. I also have NO problems with the Art style, particularly Anime style. I think it looks amazing.
If we're talking Genres, then it's JRPGs that I don't like:
Girls with cat ears. I just don't... never mind. I don't even know what to say.
Annoying characters. Seriously, out of all Japanese games I've played, there hasn't been one that didn't have an annoying character.
Dialogue that is more childish than those early morning cartoons. Especially in M rated games.

I dont know I most outfits while not combat friendly are actually pleasing to my eyes.Im not going to lie there are outfits that I think "man thats a bit much" but thats usally for maybe like 1 character each jrpg I play.

I personally cant stand random encounters. A dungion im trying to get out of that should take me 5 minutes to get the exist will take 10 or more extra minutes cause of random battles.
Back in the day it's mostly all we had and heck, I could read all about the game 9 months before I could play them since that's how long they'd make us in the west wait whilst Japan had them day one. A ton has changed in the past decade or two and I've been lovin it. :P

Well, it's not like the dungeon would be empty if there weren't random battles. I like them because they make you manage health between battles and add a degree of uncertainty. Also, most games that feature random battles give you an option to attempt to run away from them. In games that give you full health after every battle, they are pointless, though. I have played and enjoyed games with both systems.
What I don't like about japanese games nowadays is how they tried to "widen their audience" by westernizing them, only to make the weakest or most boring entries in their franchises (DMC/FF13/RE6)
This isn't the first time I've seen this notion about modern Final Fantasy. I have to ask. What in the **** are you people talking about? If anything, the Final Fantasy series has become more Japanese audience centric. More metrosexual characters, more linear, more animu story bullshit. etc.

WOW someone with anime avatar criticizing japanese games?
and beside your point are prefectly Valid.

Do you like Metal Gear Solid at all?
No he doesn't and I've made that point before on this board, to no avail.
If it was on PC only, I wonder how he would recieve it.
Not a single Valve game is PC only.
The same problem I have with animes. Cliched characters, cliched story, oversexualized characters, males looking like females, horrible cheesy voice acting etc.
Thats why I prefers games like demon/dark souls from japan.
Isint that an avatar from attack on titans? Anywho on cliched characters to be honest every character in media now is cliche. Its just how that character is presented to us.
@system-reboot: I'll say this once more that my avatar has nothing to do with my opinion. It's just there.
