First the motion controller and now this tablet controller. Why can't they actually make a *normal* console? How well do you think this console will do sales wise?

It would help if we knew the amount of RAM, processing speed, hardware specs, software lineup, price, number of tablet-like controllers are being supported, etc. Question. How we can possibly come up with such conclusions based on the little bit of information we have on the Wii U as of now?

Because Nintendo sets the trend. Polygonal 3D, D-pads, touch screens, analog sticks, rumble and motion controls were all popularized for gaming by Nintendo. It's their thing. Why would they stop?

I think it will do okay, but it really is just a gimmick. I couldn't imagine playing any FPS's on this console using this odd controller.

I dunno, but looking at that tablet controller with the inventory screen makes me more interested in seeing it in person. I guess they do things different so people that want to see something different and change gameplay a little will find something new to enjoy.

if they didn't have their gimmicks it would be the hd triplets, and besides exclusives their would be no reason to own more than one episode.

Last time Nintendo made a relatively normal console was Gamecube. And we all know how well that turned out.

Did you really forget what happened the last two gens when Nintendo directly competed with the competition? :|

Yeah, that's why they're sticking with "gimmicks."

There's dual analog, shoulder buttons, trigger buttons, 4 face buttons, and more.

Why can't you imagine using the tablet controller of the Wii U for an fps game?

Today must be hate on the Wii U day.

People, you are free to hate on the Wii U, but seriously. STOP with these topics until after E3 2012, when we will hopefully know more about the system than just that it will be hd and have a touch screen controller.

It will print money just like all their recent consoles (DS, Wii, 3DS) did. Also your fantasy is really lacking if you consider this controller a gimmick.

It really amazes me how something which has been popularized to an extent where every conceivable product has had one implemented at atleast one stage can be called a gimmick.

But it gets worse. I once found a guy calling the 'circle pad pro' a gimmick. I mean, adding something which serves to mimmick the capabilities of its competitor is the exact opposite of a gimmick.

The analog attachment isn't a gimick, but it is shortsighted and makes the system ugly

Just plug in a Classic Controller into a Wii-mote and you have a normal controller. It is BC with Wii controllers.

long may it continue. its better than sticking with the same ol controller thats a little long in the tooth now. the wiiu pad is especially interesting as it turns the living room into a big and more dynamic DS basically. that has the potential to be very kewl.

The tablet allows for entirely new experiences to be had on consoles, namely MMO's, RTS games & more. As a "mature hardcore" gamer who likes "normal" consoles, you should be happy because the u-pad functions exactly like a traditional controller so you'll have traditional games for the system while expanding to new genres and ideas.

Since you asked about sales, an official Pictionary game from Nintendo will become the best selling game of its year without question which will drive hardware sales like Wii Fit did.

I also predict Sony will be releasing PS4 with a tablet like controller. Because this time it's not to "catch up" with Nintendo, it is because tablets and touch interface are the future of technology in general, with the i-pad being a very appealing electronic device. Wii U will simply become the go to tablet for kids being relatively cheap and made of plastic.

not well... I think we all knew something big was going to happen this past gen... nintendo really linked into that mindset. They didn't deliver, while other consoles did and continue to do so. The next wave of consoles they won't be seen as current, too much back lash, too many kids got a little older and needed a different system. Quite frankly the market has soured against them.

And the Nintendo fans Pre-Wii number about the same as the Nintendo fans post Wii.

It's because gaming will go no where. Every gen will just be a graphics upgrade and gameplay will stagnate .

Face it, Nintendo is NEVER going back to the past in terms of reception. It's best to just try and enjoy them because they have gotten shafted too many times. The best they can do (and gamers should too) is MOVE ON and enjoy them for what they are today. Not let the past cloud judgment on the present, that's what hurt the N64, it's what hurt the Gamecube, and it's what hurt the Wii this gen.

The Wii U will follow.

If the 360 and PS3 are "normal" consoles, then why are they trying to play motion-control catchup with the Wii? Or if the PSP Vita is a "normal" handeheld, then why is it trying to play touch-pad catchup with the DS? These so-called "gimmicks" are what we regular people call "innovations" or attempts to bring about change within the industry. If all a company does is maintain the status quo, there would never be improvement and evolution. We might as well just play Pong at 1920x1080 and call it a day if input innovation is unnecessary.

Missing? The tablet controller is shaped like a LeapPad.

That, and the screen is unnecessary for people who'd prefer to only look at their TV.

Yes, the tablet controller may be useful for RTS games or something similar. But it's a turn off for the core crowd who only plays core games.

I hear that some games will be backwards compatible with the Clas*ic Controller though. So the tablet controller alone shouldn't stop core gamers from buying a Wii U.

Nintendo's gimmicks make their consoles unique, giving people a special experience. Especially with the Wii. Before the Wii, my mom never really ever played video games. If the Wii brings her to play games of any kind, that's not bad. Every person playing games is good for the industry, no matter what kind of games. It makes people not look at games as the hobby of "nerds" but rather as a fun pastime. So I want Nintendo to continue doing what they do best.

If the tablet controller didn't have face buttons, shoulder buttons, 2 analog sticks, and buttons on the back, I would agree with you. This controller is ideal for RPG's (imagine having an inventory in your hands in Dark Souls), shooters (put the map and locations of teammates on the screen), and RTS (touch controls would be almost as good as a mouse). It will come down to how well 3rd party developers actually utilize the screen, but I really think the screen on the controller will be a great thing.

Yeah, there's nothing gimmicky at all about the sixaxis, or the PS Move. I'm sure you were livid when Sony decided to *gasp* come out with a new PS3 controller that had rumble support. Also, what's with the touch screen on the Vita? Touch screens are gimmicks.

The Wii-U controller looks good, at least in theory.

Consoles have WAAAY too few buttons atm. I see how many genres could benefit.

F/TPS=Maybe now we can pick up every dang weapon we find again. Finally.
RPGs=Less time in menus and pausing, more time playing
Action Adventure=Again less time in menus
MMOS=Self Explanatory
RTS=Again Self Explanatory
Puzzle=Many intriguing ways to implement the seond screen
Adventure=Just like in Puzzle games, plenty of interesting ways they could pull this off

That dephends really, on some PC games I need to manage over 30 items, which I dont think will be easy to do on a wii-u controller.

[QUOTE="RickTophen"] "How you you think the console will do sales wise?"wiifan001

I think it will do okay, but it really is just a gimmick. I couldn't imagine playing any FPS's on this console using this odd controller.

There's dual analog, shoulder buttons, trigger buttons, 4 face buttons, and more.

Why can't you imagine using the tablet controller of the Wii U for an fps game?

You need big man hands to use the bumpers properly. I'm not saying you don't have big man hands but for some people they can't grow large hands. Also the dual analog sticks are small same with the buttons.
