@X_CAPCOM_X: It would only be a bottleneck if I was using a 1080p 144hz display, at 4K there is no CPU bottleneck.
4K is the great neutraliser unless you are using a console level CPU then your minimum FPS will suffer, but any i5 level CPU past sandy bridge will not bottleneck any GPU at 4K.
If I had a 1440p,1080 144hz display then yes there would be a bottleneck... But we are talking about getting 110fps instead of 140fps kind of bottleneck... It's not a night and day change.
My current rig has: Intel i5 2500k, 2x GTX 970 SLI (Asus), Gigabyte Z68X-UD4 B3, Corsair DDR3 1600MHz 16GB (4x 4GB), Corsair series 3 (550 MB/s) 120GB SDD, OR DK 1&2
However, I'm currently building a new PC and when I get my Intel i7 8700k next week, I'll build my new high end PC including an 1080 Ti.
So since the i7 8700k has shipped now, I can now say that by next week I will be playing on this beast: Intel i7 8700k, Gigabyte Aorus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition 11G, MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon, Nzxt Phantom 820, G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2 x 8 GB DDR4-RAM 3000 MHz, be quiet! Dark Rock PRO 3, Corsair RM750x White (750W), Samsung 850 EVO Basic (500GB, 2.5"), WD Black Performance 2 TB HD
Adata 256 GB SSD (OS and some select apps like Adobe Suite)
Seagate 2 TB SSHD (personal files, general apps)
Toshiba 5 TB HDD (games)
Asus Prime B350 Plus
EVGA 750W GQ
Corsair Carbide 400C case
LG 29" ultrawide 21:9 monitor (2560x1080)
Cooler Master Pro Keys L RGB keyboard (Cherry Blue)
Logitech G502 Proteus mouse
Only have pics of my older graphics card, but the rest is all the same

I'm due to assemble a new PC soon. But, I don't really feel the urge because I'm sticking to 1080p.
4.5-year old AMD FX8350/6GB GTX 1060 and 4-year old RoG G46VW laptop i5 3230m/GTX 660m (1080p and 768p, respectively). The latter will play games up to Far Cry 4 (low settings).
My PC is about as powerful as a 360. I don't use it for gaming but for photo and HD video editing. I also used it for class work until I completed my bachelor's earlier this year.
Would you benefit from better CPU for those tasks, or is it alright?
Oh. In a sense, I watch live DirecTV and Netflix on the iPad Mini. - I had a Hauppage USB TV tuner. It worked fine when we had cable. Kinda useless when we switched to DirecTV. Plus, the image quality on the iOS is much better. Ironic because my main monitor is actually a 1080p TV.
The laptop actually does more tasks than my gaming PC. It's the hub for digital photos and videos. It's my main computer for my college courses. It's also my backup PC when we're on the road. I think that's my 1440p Spytec A119 dashcam hooked up to it.
I make do with old 2005 Logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers. It's 12 years old. But, it can still shake the walls and desk. ;)
I'll take an updated picture tonight with my Star Citizen XL mousepad. Though the right corner is a bit stained thanks to some rum and coke I may have spilled.
@HalcyonScarlet: I have a base Dell XPS 8700 from 2015. It has an Intel Core i7 4770 quad core. It came with 8GB RAM which has been good enough so far. The graphics card is good enough to run the Mass Effect trilogy on low to mid settings.
It does the job just fine. I haven't tried 4k editing yet but will be doing so in the next few days as I'm doing some editing now. We'll see.

Oh cool, sounds like all you need is a GTX 950 or 1050Ti and you have a pretty modern PC. I did great with a 750Ti for quite a while.

Thanks for clarifications. I asked because I actually do use a 1080p 144hz monitor, and my frames stick around 100-120 instead of steadily being 144hz in most games. Maybe I should just go 4k for my next monitor upgrade, although I personally prefer high framerates over resolution bumps.
I have a new mousepad. It's a Star Citizen XL size one that fits under the keyboard and mouse. It's nice.
Large mouse pads are very nice. I would be using my extended corsair one, but I don't have the proper desk space for it atm. I'm stickin with the good ol' qck for now.
@X_CAPCOM_X: ever since I started gaming on a projector I stop caring about refresh rates or resolution.
I mostly play RPGs and open world action adventure games so frame rate being over 60fps isn't much of impact for me... Playing with a projector at 110" with 25k contrast level and 100% SRGB coverage at 60hz?... It's better than gaming at 4k.
Next upgrade/purchase for be will be a 4k/HDR projector.
If I was interested FPS games as I use to be I would be all over those 1440/144hz IPS Gsync panels.
I only bought the 4K monitor because it was recommended to me by to me by other photographers who work in the SRGB space. Superb monitor for photography.
@Grey_Eyed_Elf: I play third person action/action-adventure games on my PC, and I gotta say, games like dragon's dogma and such at high framerates is very immersive as well.
That's good stuff too man I've never actually considered a setup like that. It's very interesting to hear people's reasons behind their hardware choices.
I'm assuming input lag or anything related isn't an issue since you game on it.

Not a issue at all, its a gaming projector and is more responsive than my monitor. To be honest I would have never considered it, I just happened to visit a relative several years ago and was in complete awe of his 360 hooked up to a Epson 720p projector... Spent 3 hours playing Gears of War 3 split screen co-op and was never the same again.
People think going from a 27" monitor to a 22" is too much, try playing at 80" and going back home to play on a 23" monitor.
Lots of choices out there, trouble is until you actually try them you never really know what is important for your needs... I am fortunate to have had a 120Hz Benq, a 29" Dell 21:9 and now a 40" 4K panel along with a Optoma GT1080e DLP. DLP is right for me... Once I get a 4K HDR one Ill be in gaming heaven.
@jun_aka_pekto: Everythings great with exception of you still playing Farcry 4 HeHe?
That's Far Cry 3 on the screen. ;)
Right now, my current squeeze for the rest of the year is STALKER, namely Call of Pripyat (plus its mod: Call of Chernobyl). I also have Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky installed on both PC and laptop. But, they don't appeal as much as CoP.
I mean, it's not the kind of PC I would build if I just wanted a gaming PC lol. Probably wouldn't even spend half that much.
But my PC is my money maker, so I need something with a bit of extra kick.
I lucked out on it though. A client who had some crazy requests for some high end assets floated half the bill. And of course the other half pretty much paid for itself as I was able to speed up many of the bottlenecks in my work flow.

I hate to say it but it must be someone hard for video editing with that PC then as it would be slow render times.

In my sig, but I want to build another one really bad. Will be building a custom water-loop build next with a 1950x and not sure if I want to put SLI 1080 Ti in or wait until next GPUs come out. I haven't done much research on them and unsure when they will even release. Will do this early next year to be across from this one (as my wife and I fight over this one). I did do this theme in silver, black, and purple though so she definitely likes it.

Honestly not even sure if editing HD video with 360 specs is even possible lol. The lack of memory alone would kill it, and the other aspects certainly don't help.
Hell, even the amount of ram in current gen consoles would be pretty bad for the task. I remember bitching about 24gb not being enough back in 2010 lol.

Now that's what I need to do... find someone to pay me to play games on my computer.

lol it really is the best damn employment side effect I could ask for.
My job basically requires me to have a relatively high end PC at all times. And I have a good excuse to upgrade my GPU every year or two even though I don't need to. Can even write the shit off on my taxes lol. It's great.

I do use a laptop at work (it's provided by the company, but it's a few years old and I really don't need it for much beyond Power Point and videos >_>), but I doubt I could justify to the CRA (Canadian IRS) that my personal laptop is needed for work.
Storage: Samsung 850 Evo ssd 500GB + Seagate Barracuda 3TB
Monitor: LG 34UM95-P ultrawide + wacom cintiq 21ux dtk-2100
It's an old but reliable build, have put off replacing for over 2 years now since it still runs everything quite well and would need a near complete rebuild.
@lundy86_4: Yeah the bias lighting is supposed to help with eye fatigue etc...I have one on my other tv as well....I've noticed a difference with the picture and the eyes. They are worth it and not very expensive on amazon.
Is that a store model desk? If so which one is it?
I want to get a desk like that to replace my old one.
Oh and on topic I have.
Intel i7 4770k
Zotac Amp Extreme 1080ti
2x8GB of 2400mhz DDR3 Gskill Ares RAM
Asus Maximus Hero VI motherboard
Corsair HX1000 power supply
Corsair Air 540 case
2 1TB WD blue hard drives
1 480gb SSD
1 256GB SSD
and another 7 external hard drives.
There is a bunch of other stuff I have like an HTC Vive I got at release, some Beyerdynamic DT770 pro 80 ohm headphones or an ATH 2020 mic but there are too many to list and this topic mainly pertains to gaming rigs.
Old picture of my rig from 2014 but it's the same aside from switching out the 2 970s for a 1080ti.
1080ti in this pic next to some of my other older video cards.
Wish I kept some of the older ones before the 8800gt.
I'll take an updated picture tonight with my Star Citizen XL mousepad. Though the right corner is a bit stained thanks to some rum and coke I may have spilled.
@RyviusARC: It's not a store model desk, I bought it online years ago and I couldn't tell you from where. Sorry.
I think I bought it from an office supply store. You won't find a desk like this in a "home office" section. You need to go straight to business level stuff.
@RyviusARC: I have a similar desk which I purchased used. From what I've heard, the best places to get these types of desks are from private sales when a company is moving/going out of business and need to liquidate an office.
If you get in touch with office building management companies they could probably hook you up.
My god damn, I've noticed that many of us have some pretty good video cards. Mine's older right now and looking to a full system upgrade with Volta and Cannonlake when they both arrive late next year.
@jun_aka_pekto: Hey, jun, just saw that we have the exact same speakers. Lol. Old as hell speakers, but honestly, they've been great as far as sound quality and life goes. I think mine are like 7 years old now, and still going strong. Planning on getting a 7.1 Blue headset soon for specific games and streaming, but the speakers will never go away fully.
