So instead of making another topic that sparks the debate between WRPGs and JRPGs, I thought to take a look at how we play that genre. I was originally going to go with options of Warrior, Mage, and Thief. You know, the basic cIasses that are most familiar. But then I considered how some RPGs have settings which don't necessarily facilitate the common archetypes, such as Mass Effect with its cIasses of Vanguard, Adept, Sentinel, Engineer, and Infiltrator. Or Too Human with categrioes of Defender, Bioengineer, Champion, and Berserker. Not even sure what cIass system FF13 uses in its latest iteration.

But how ever the setting and context names the cIasses, they usually follow the patterns of common themes. And they are:

The Heavy Hitter * You like the power attack approach. Arming yourself with the heaviest armor and most powerful weapons, be that enchanted sword or tricked out shotgun, you launch yourself head first into the fray hitting hard with all your might. You revel in clashing with the enemy up close and personal, and in seeing the terror in their eyes when you deliver the killing blow.

The Ranged Warrior * Keep your allies close and your enemies as far away as possible is your Modus Operandi. Hurling arrows, or viewing from the scope of your sniper rifle, maybe even with magical projectiles, you land deadly strikes from afar, never giving your enemie's swords or close range guns the chance to strike back at you.

The Stealth Master * You are one with shadows, or perhaps you have access to advanced cloaking technology. Where brute force is sure to result in bloody demise for your journey, you're the one who can evade the traps and find the alternate routes to sneak past the fortified defences unnoticed. Where resources are needed you obtain them by less conventional means. And when faced with combat situations speed and dexterity assure your victory, suddenly not being where the enemies weapon lands, and striking back too swiftly for the eye to see, before they even have a chance to react.

The Crowd Controller * Your methods are unusual and varied, employing arcane techniques, or technology beyond the grasp of the average warrior. Manipulation of the battlefield is your specialty, turning the tide of battle in your parties favor. Throw out those health perks, boost your allies stats while similtaneously debuffing the enemy army. You mock the opposing forces as you strip away what ever advantages they might have had. And your contributions to the battle comes in more subtle forms than direct attack, be that a well place fire strike, or a paralyzing cloud which will leave the horde at the mercy of your allies. Not always seeking the glory, you're still a valuable asset as the wild card that alters the dynamics of the battle, turning defeat into surprise victory.

Neither of those in SRPGs my favorite class is Halberdier.

Edit* So I would say Heavy Hitter.

Stealth, so long as I get to use short and/or longswords. HATE using daggers as my main weapon, and if that applies, I usually go for heavy-hitter as a close back-up choice.

I'm trickster ^_^
I always play the complicated cIass with hexes or curses that help You on the background.
I love stealing spells from mid-air, disabling a healer, shielding people, interrupting stuff or turning people into sheep.

I love to try and be The Ranger but in a lot of cases and games (I look at Oblivion 360 version) It's a pain to do so, and I always end up as the in your face guy who sometimes uses a bow.

18Bard/2Fighter

Build your bard as a melee combatant. Give him a strong CON and STR. You take the two levels of fighter for the free bonus feats and grab all of the two weapon fighting with them and your normal character feats. So you end up with two weapon fighting, improved two weapon fighting, greater two weapon fighting, oversized two weapon fighting, weapon focus, power attack, toughness, and improved critical.

If you go human, then you can add an exotic weapon proficiency.

Mages for the most part. I rarely play the generic fighter classes and depending on RPG at question I will rarely play the thief or stealthy characters as the stealth mechanics in RPGs are often less developed then Magic and Fighting. Besides, theres always a beauty in watching your initial level 1 weakling of a mage that cast some very very sad little wisp of smoke turn into a dragon summoning, blizzard casting, death machine that cant be touched because he she is surrounded by summons and shields.

None of the above. I like to go for Tank, Tanks are not heavy hitters, they are decent hitters with massive defense.

My feelings exactly. It's more arduous during the first few levels, but then once a certain benchmark is passed, your enemies are cringing in terror

I kind of grouped the tanks and damage dealers together, as they both typically still carry the heavy sets of armor and weapons, with only a 40/60 difference in focus on damage or protection either way. Also both being in the thick of battle and not at a distance. Which is to say they have more in common with each other than they do with stealth and magic users who wear very light to no armor at all, and weaker melee weapons.

Ranged classes.

There's nothing like cutting down your enemy before he can get to you.

Summoners.

Also nothing like blowing away your opponent with a mythical space-moon-dragon who fires his lazer/meteorite from space.

Mages.

Screw araound with your enemies. Slow, lowering stats, turning them into imps/toads, shrinking them, you name it, a mage can do it.

The Stealth Master.

But Ranged is a close second. Not so much casters, but archers definitely.

Like ...

Aion: Scout

WoW: Druid

WAR: Shadow Warrior, Witch Elf (though my main was a KoTBS)

ME: Infiltrator

DAO: Rogue

Etc. :D

Pretty much, even ME that has quite the action focus, the Sentinel can be become a beast by the end. Singularity would group together armies of geth (in ME1 anyway), let alone stuff like Mass Push, Mass Lift in ME2. For me though Baldurs Gate 1&2 were the epitome of this. The final battles of those games really came down to the mages taking down shields, buffs and what not with the physical classes playing more of a clean up, protection role

Heavy Hitter for me. It's the easiest control for me. I can't handle mages or ranged attackers. I need to be up close and in the action.

My first playthrough is always a stealthy build with heavy emphasis on traps and poisons. Using ranged weapon to draw aggro (and poison/cripple the enemy if the game supports it) and then lead my foes into a set series of of traps, and then dealing a death blow with my trusty dagger. Though honestly I usually end up being more direct because stealth mechanics in games aren't as awesome as I like them. If I sneak up on a regular enemy, I should simply kill them outright. Screw extra damage - give me an insta-kill backstab.

Second playthrough is either a mage or warrior, sometimes a battlemage. Usually much easier but so satisfying to cut through crowds single handedly.

Heavy Hitters. They are just the most accessible and tend to be the easiest in terms of leveling.

However in MMOs, I'm usually Mage or Thief.

Most folks will say one thing but in the end, play classes that are FOTM :D (Flavour of the Month). Especially true for MMOs. Personally, I usually prefer ranged classes coz you get to dictate who and when to attack. Not mages or spellcasters though, I just don't really enjoy them. But now I tend to drift into hybrid melee/heal hybrid. Paladins/Clerics that sort of stuffs. You have good armor, you have buffs and you can heal. While carrying a fiercesome 2-hander. What's not to like?

Ranged at first with heavy hitter coming in a close second. It's always fun watching your enemy having to chase you down in order to attack you.

Well my favorite CIasses when i played WoW was Warrior and Druid. Warrrior Tank/DPS, Druid healing.
I finished Dragon Age: Origins with a Warrior aswell and did all the tanking.
I cant remember what i did in mass effect, i hardly felt like there was really a difference with those cIasses.
The cIass system in FFXIII isnt really the same as in these other games because you can change cIasses at will. I guess Commando with Fang was the best though.
