Older consoles were all about innovation. From the design and evolution of the controllers (the addition of analog sticks and triggers) to the transition and evolution of 2D/isometric graphics to 3D graphics, with each new iteration, consoles genuinely looked and played better.

On the other hand, newer consoles are focused more on gimmicks rather than actual innovation. Last generation's gimmick of motion controlled gaming is being dropped in favor of touchscreen gaming, and when the next generation comes, touchscreen gaming will be dropped in favor of the next big gimmick. How are consoles supposed to evolve if developers keep focusing on dead end gimmicks that don't improve the way we play games? Why are developers focused more on gimmicks rather than innovating what we currently have? When did the transition from innovation to gimmicks occur?

How are you level 17 with hardly any posts? also everything new is a "gimmick" to gamers so its hard to tell what you mean.

Modern consoles

The next gen is going to be hilarious, they really will be the poor man's PC.  DRM, no used games, internet required (and not just for a few games, ALL games), fees for online and all of that with p1ss poor specs and no innovation.

Whether something is a gimmick or not depends on adoption and implementation. The simple answer to the TC's question would be 'when developers became unable to make use of new technology'.

An interesting/quirky feature that helps the product stand out, but is essentially useless and ends up being forgotten.  Motion gaming for example.

blame Nintendo for that. The bastards ruined gaming for everybody. The only ones that care for gaming are Sony because even M$ is all about robbing you and it's clear when you compare PS+ to XBL Gold and its insane failure rate.

Usually it refers to features that are featured in it's perception (to get sales), but have very little real use when it comes to the actual product. Motion controls last gen are a great example of this. Though I agree, people do find ways to throw it and the negative connotations it comes with.

I think before hardware makers used to be focused more on evolution than innovation. Now it's based more on innovation which most people here consider gimmicks rather than just pure hardware evolution. I'm not saying they didn't used to innovate before, but I think it really became a focus and actually caught on last gen.

Fair enough, though "essentially useless" leaves a lot of room for personal interpretation. Take your motion gaming example, while you consider it useless and forgetable, fact of the matter is, it stuck with the industry, Ninty and MS capitalized on it with Wii and Kinect, which brought them lots of money. Judging by the rumors, MS is planning to pursue the direction even further...

Among the "casual" audience, it's a big hit and an important feature, just like many PC gamers consider Oculus Rift an important and potentially game-changing feature, while console gamers could easily call it a gimmick...

It's not subjective. If something is a gimmick, then it's a gimmick regardless of whether or not you agree.

Like Articuno76 said, we can determine if something is a gimmick based on how its adopted and implemented. The fact that Nintendo and Sony are dropping motion controlled gaming in favor of touchscreen gaming is a clear indicator that motion controlled gaming was nothing more than a gimmick and not actual innovation. If developers had stuck with it and refined it over the years to improve the way we play games, then it would count as innovation. That isn't the case obviously. On the other hand, things like analog sticks and 3D graphics aren't gimmicks. They've genuinely improved the way we play games over the years.

Gimmick is subjective.

Motion gaming is not a gimmick as it is useful for some types of games, physical games, dance games, fitness games etc. You may not be interested but some people are.

I think we can call tablet controllers unanimously a gimmick, it doesn't really help anything.

When I was %100 PC gamer I used to think rumble was a gimmick, now I can't play anything without it, I use a mouse it's like "why isn't the rumble working! oh forgot, it's just a mouse."

Sixaxis was a gimmick until I used it in heavy rain, now I think it's a pretty cool feature if used to good effect.

NES gun controller was a gimmick until Duck Hunt.

I think PC gamers see alot of things as gimmicks because they either never get to try it or are closed-minded about it, "grumble grumble stupid controllers with auto-aim, mouse is better" but once you get used to it a controller is soooooo comfortable for FPS and alot of things even tho it's naturally difficult to aim with your thumbs, hence the aim assist.

I'd love to but he made his profile 'friends only' and thus no one has access.  The gist is that he is a 'survivalist' who believes the end is nigh and that we should all prepare for it.  He thinks he's some tough guy, hence the veiled threats, and that karate or some sh1t will save his ass.  It was proper tin-foil hat stuff and utterly hilarious.

I'm sure he'll deny it though, hopefully others remember it too.

Actually if I really wanted to I suppose I could make a case for cyber bullying against some of you guys. If you live in the US you might want to check your state laws, some of them do extend to gaming forums and the like and there could be serious consequences.

As for my "end of the world rant" I simply stated that it's best to be prepared just in case of an emergency. Such as a national disaster or the like, not that I am convinced that something like that would happen. But it's good to be safe and make sure you have extra food and guns etc....

The only thing gimmicky to me is motion controls and the Wii U gamepad. Nintendo seems to be the Gimmicker or gimmicky trend setter.

I was an 80's baby, so gimmicks on consoles have always existed for me. The original NES was filled with gimmicky devices. So for me, there was never a transition...it just has always been that way.

Ooooo flex those muscles for me! You wouldn't be so butt hurt if you hadn't been such a massive pr1ck in the past.  See how I say past? I give you the chance for redemption .... I have that power, if you wish it.

Oh god my sides

No, no you couldn't.  Lets for a moment put aside the fact that you would be laughed out of court because any investigation would uncover your 'killer instict' (makes me lol just thinking about it) and imagine the evidence you would present:

You: Waahh Waahh I posted some nonsense on an internet forum and some dudes laughed at me for being an idiot!! Help me hurt them!!

Judge: Did they actually threaten you?

You: Noooo... but they was mean and I was hurt....can you salve my butt even though I was the one threatening to kill people?

Judge: No, you are an idiot and I sentence you to a life of ridicule on the internet.

You: WAAAHHH! Not even a finger tip of butt salve to ease my pain? Bu bu bu bu I was bullied!!

Judge: Shut up, even I hate you.  Now crawl back under that rock you came from and take your ownage like a man! If you can.

I have been threatened by people on here. They usually send me them in messages on PSN or to my Youtube account talking about how they want to put me in an oven and want will hurt me and my family if they ever find me. I am pretty certain who these people are, you're probably one of them.

Like I said, keep laughing behind the safety of your computer where there are no physical consequnces for being an internet assh0le.
