I dont understand how you talk about "technical visuals" and "visual visuals" (or whatever)... In my understanding, technology is only a tool, that devs use to make a game look good. If you want to talk about technological level of a games visuals, then Crysis isnt at all that impressive. It looks great thanks to great hardware it runs on - it has ultrasharp textures because its on 1 GB graphics RAM, etc. Killzone is easily more technologically advanced since it uses cutting edge techniques like deffered shading (thanks to which the lighting effects of KZ2 look superior to anything Crysis is capable of), incredible particle effects, etc. Which, on the other hand, changes nothing on the fact that maxed out Crysis simply does look better than Killzone 2. The raw power of hardware running maxed out Crysis is so much higher - Crysis has more polygons, sharper textures, higher resolution, better physics, etc. Thats something the technical fineses of Killzone 2 cannot compete with.BlbecekBobecek

Lol, you have no idea what your talking about huh?

[QUOTE="Silenthps"][QUOTE="Magik85"]3 years old Crysis is not that impressive anymore....other thing is Crysis + mods.yellosnolvr
... what other games look better than vanilla Crysis on very high?

metro 2033 on very high. looks so nice. worth the performance drop sometimes. and probably performs better than crysis on very high, at least with 6850's in crossfire. can't think of anything else though.

Modded Crysis runs about twice as fast as maxed Metro on dual 460s. Once you hit the ceiling, that game returns very little for the power you throw at it.

I'd say Metro looks better in screenshots (except, for character models, some of those look like ass) while you can't help going a little :? compared to Crysis once you start tearing into things with your weapons.

well i was talking about vanilla. modded crysis is definitely superior to anything we'll see for awhile. same with crysis' physics. but the thing is, i dont think the character models on metro 2033 are that bad, unless im completely overlooking something (obviously i am)

I mentiond modded Crysis in regards to performance (takes a heavier toll on your rig). Still, I can V-sync the game and remain at a pretty stable 50 fps (weird refresh rate, no idea why in that game) while Maxed Metro..... Well, here's what the benchmark said:

Photobucket

It runs better in game of course but I do get drops to 25 fps without the visuals actually justifying it.

I don't have a good screenshot of Metro to illustrate my point about the character models but they're rather stiff.

And when they wear headgear (especially ski masks) they seem to have done a rather poor job of meshing textures. they just seem layered rather than fabric over skin.

Edit: What Metro 2033 really lacks is good motion blur. when your fps takes a dive it can really be felt compared to Crysis which was actually playable at 24 fps back when I had to live with that in order to achieve great visuals.

Is that how Witcher 2 will be played though, with an over the shoulder behind the back perspective? Seems more like a bullshot to me (ie a pre rendered scene in the game, not actual gameplay).

Hakkai007

Nope it's in game.

You can zoom in like that.

If that is the case it does look impressive indeed. I kind of agree with Dragon though I don't really see it besting Crysis though.

Maybe Crysis on high, but not Crysis on max. It still brings some modern comps to their knees trying to max out at 1080p+ with nice framerates

On PC? It should be soon, Crysis with realistic mods looks mind blowing, but I'm sure a better game will come around (AKA Crysis 2). If you're talking about consoles, then a better looking game than crysis on console hardware is downright impossible. On next-gen consoles, yeah it'll happen for sure. But there is no way a game as good looking as Crysis on the PC will be on consoles. Especially crysis with realistic mods. This video just blew me away with it's effects (it's a Crysis Xtreme FX mod) the effects are a little too dramatic but it looks fantastic. Especially the way the trees move and the explosions. Imagine the graphics and effects of that mod mixed in with Battlefield multiplayer...*drools* make it happen DICE, make it happen!

I think you would have to be blind to not see the advancement in graphics these past 3 years. Crysis looks great, but it still has a lot of stuff that looks outdated and janky.

JangoWuzHere
^^^^^^This i was replaying crysis yesterday and some it really does look janky, the bushes, rocks and trees sometimes really look like they are just plopped on a flat map, i am not near as impressed with crysis now as I was a few years ago. Still awesome for 2007

Next gen console won't be that strong after the heat issues of the 360 and also power supplies. Unless console switch to liquid cooling there will be limit to what kind of cpu/gpu they can add then you have to power it.

Technically speaking, AvP on DX11 mode is technically more advanced than Crysis, yes. Not in all ways, but it's more advanced.

It's like comparing the N64 with PS1. N64 had smooth textures therefore it's graphics were more advanced than PS1's.

Just because it has a new API, doesn't mean it's more "advanced." Is World of Warcraft more technically advanced than Crysis cause it has DX11? Must be by your logic.

Alien Vs Predator is a console port that has DX11 tact on, it cannot fully take advantage of it. The reason for this is the whole point of DX10 was to cut backwards compatibility with previous DirectX generations, you cannot achieve that very well by just sticking it on top of a DX9 game, you have to build with DX10/11 in mind.

Just because something uses DX11, doesn't mean it is using it properly.

Yes, but DX11 is, even if just forced on a DX9 game, still more advanced than DX10. Of course Crysis looks much better than AvP, but AvP does have more advanced/higher poly/tesselated models in DX11 mode.

WoW does support dx11 .

Indeed it does. The more high-end cards benefit a good amount from DX11. Does it have any DX11 effects? Not a single damn one. What does it do? DX11 can speed up/improve performance of DX9/DX10 coded games. Although some hardware does worse in DX11 than Dx9 for WoW. Crysis performs a bit better in DX10 than DX9 (unmodded that is, and looks a bit better) also. A single advantage doesn't make it more technically advanced.

Let me compare two old games, Mario 64 on the N64 and Quake on the PC.

Quake had more detailed textures, architecture and advanced lighting and was fully 3D, but Mario 64 still looked better and was more advanced because it had smooth, hardware accelerated graphics and some next-gen effects (like transparent water and reflection mapping).

Quake later got the GLQuake patch which made it hardware accelerated but in 1996 Mario 64 was the prettier/more advanced game.

once devs give up on consoles and make some real pc games or once the next consoles come out. current consoles just don't have the power to render such a large lush forest.

On AvP's DX11 support

1. For geometry amplification, AvP supports DX11 hardware tessellation via displacement mapping.

2. Shader Model 5.0 Compute Shaders for post processing effects.

AvP also has HDR lighting(HDRL), Tone Mapping, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion(SSAO) and several other effects e.g. dynamic lighting and shadows. To combine the effects, it uses "Deferred Rendering" methods. PC version has "full screen passes" SSAO and improved shadows.

AvP can say Hi on Crysis 2's deferred rendering methods. Unlike Crysis1's lighting method, Deferred Rendering makes multiple lights efficient.

AvP PC's 3D engine has plans for DX11 Shader Model 5.0 physics.

once devs give up on consoles and make some real pc games or once the next consoles come out. current consoles just don't have the power to render such a large lush forest. imprezawrx500

Knocked down the poly count of the mountain a fair bit as well, had to tweak its textures to try to make up for the lack of distance objects.

Still looks good for a console with 512 mbs of total ram and a 7800gs...

Maybe. But in the context of the argument being made, the lack of distance foliage is arguably a counter argument to consoles being able to achieve Crysis level lush forests. All the distance objects are gone, where as part of Crysis's foliage was the range in which it could be seen surrounding the player.

I am really looking forward to the next gen consoles. I really don't think the will be at even a mid range pc. You have heat and power and cost. Pc hardware is still moving forward and the longer consoles take to come out the bigger the gap. One thing is working in consoles favor the multiplats are not tapping the power of the pc.

I don't know why mods even count. There are mods for Quake 1 that make it look close to Unreal Tournament 3.

Also some of you PC gamers are ignorant or don't know much about graphics.

For example when Halo came out on the first Xbox, it was technically the most impressive shooter by miles.

PC shooters like Return to Castle Wolfenstein maybe had sharper textures and more polys and ran in higher resolutions, but Halo had pixel shading and bump mapping, something unheard of in PC shooters at the time.

I think its gotten to the point that no one in system wars will admit that X game has better graphics then Crysis. I can picture 5 years from now a game comes out and blows everyones mind and everyone finally claims that it is the graphics king, yet here on SW Crysis will ALWAYS be graphics king. It will never be replaced here.

I am a 360 owner, and never played a pc game in my life. However, I still dont get how people are going to say 360, ps3 games can look better than a pc game which looks way more advanced? And then get mad about it, such as yourself......
