Who made the best contributions to gaming and gamers in general during this generation.

If you want to vote for valve and can't see it in the poll just write valve in a post and i will keep count of it in preparation for the results(no room left in poll related issue).

Nintendo's motion controller and casualisation = worst. ever.

I would like to say nintendo because of the Nintendo DS has a lot of good variation and good ideas for games. However people under look the DS =/ so then I would say Sony for it's strange yet nice exclusives or introduction to games (:

( top of my head Little Big Planet, Demon Souls )

PC was the first to have online gaming not MS. Online gaming services would still go for the PC, the PC has the best interaction and availability when it comes to online multiplayers. But I understand some people don't have the PC for it or just refuse to use PC for gaming. ( not trying to take credit from xbl but if it gets credit PC deserves more. )

  1. Microsoft = A big push towards online gaming
  2. Sony = Blu-Ray
  3. Nintendo = Motion controls

Those are the biggest "contributions" I saw out of each of the big 3 this generation. However none of those really stick out to me, so I'm going with EA due to their new orignal series... MADDEN!!

I would say none of them, at least not in a good way. I was gonna say maybe Epic for licensing out the Unreal engine but I know a lot of people dont like that... so yeah i'm gonna say no one company made a significant contribution that affects all gamers.

In terms of shear quantitiy of quality gaming titles, I'd have to say Nintendo gave the most this gen so far.

Are we forgetting that PS3 has DC Universe Online which supports hundreds and hundreds of players on a server at once, and it has cross platform play with PC players?

Are we forgetting that MAG has 256 players?

Are we forgetting that the PS3 version of Portal 2 has Steam intergreation, and cross platform play with PC and Mac players?

Are we forgetting that Untold Legends Dark Kingdom has Xfire intergreation?

Are we forgetting that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournment 3 has Mod support?

Are we forgetting that Metal Gear Online does not require PSN? So when PSN is down You can still play this game online.

Are we forgetting that most PS3 games run on Dedicated Servers and avarage out at a 32 player count?

Yes, Microsoft pushed console online gaming last gen, but this gen belongs to Sony, becuase PS3's online is the closes thing consoles got to PC gaming online.

PlayStation Network is an Open Platform, because of Sony. That's why the PS3 version of UT3 has Mod support not the Xbox 360, because Xbox Live is a close network.

Konami would of not of been able to use there own service if it was not for Sony having an open network.

Let's see Killzone 2 and 3 = Dedicated Servers, Warhawk = Dedicated Servers, Resistance 1 & 2 = Dedicated servers. Shall I'll go on?
Yes Xbox Live also has Dedicated servers, but does Halo Reach? no does Gears of War 2? nope.
Halo Reach's 16 players versus Killzone 2's 32 Players or how about Gears of Wars 2's 10 players vs. Resistance Fall of Man's 40 Players.

*Edit

@lawlessx I didn't know that I quit keeping tabs on the game after it came out. Before the game came out I remember SOE and some Game Journalists from Gamespot and Giant Bomb said it was cross platform play. I could be thinking of another game.

like some have said before:

ms for online

sony for exclusives

nintendo was just all bad and caused too much casualisation

I would say any gaming company that didnt go casual this gen gets a +1. Epic also gets a +1 if they licenced out UE.

Valve made alot of contributions, but it felt more like it brought the same great stuff again to the table.

Portal started about 100 memes

expanding gaming's demographic (with portal and tf2 being free) without dumbing down.

PSN is not an open platform. It's more open than Live, but it's not an open platform. If it was open, Konami wouldn't need Sony's permission.

What does that have anything to do with it? Frontlines: Fuel of War on Live supports 50 players. Does that mean it contributed to gaming? And yes, Gears of War 3 has dedicated servers. You need to do more research.

in terms of overall trends rather than specific games (then its just another "best games of the generation" thread), id probably go with valve for digital distribution. steam was there years before this generation, but im pretty sure the store started selling 3rd party games right around the start of this generation. DD is huge for gaming and steam has been the most influential platform for it.

Yeah, why is Valve not on the list when activision is. activision hasnt really made any contributions. i would argue that they have hurt the industry. but who knows. i guess you could say that the incredibly popularity of call of duty has expanded the demographic of video games as a whole. i know a bunch of older guys and my friend's dads who now play call of duty.

The BEST contribution (as in quality, not quantity) would be from Monolith Soft, which has created Xenoblade -- a game I find hard not to classify as the best of this generation.

But, to give credit where it's due:

1. Monolith Soft - Xenoblade

2. 2k Boston - Bioshock

3. Eidos Montreal - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

(4. Valve - Portal 2)

Indie Developers:

1. Johnathan Blow - Braid

2. Team Meat - Super Meat Boy

3. Markus "Notch" Persson - Minecraft

PSN is open enough that' developers can do more like mods, custom features, integration of other services. You know something Microsoft would not allow on Xbox Live. When I say most PS3 games have dedicated servers I mean games that they publish You know Sony and Microsoft aren't paying for BF3's servers right? EA is. When You look at PS3 games publish by Sony most of them have dedicated servers not all of them, but a high percent of them have dedicated servers. Microsoft does not pay for Front lines Fuel of War servers THQ does. I said Gears of War "2" which does not have dedicated servers. If you read my post You would see that I said some X360 games publish by MS do have dedicated servers, but most don't. Yes I do know there's a Xbox 360 game that does have cross platform play, but I can't think of the name of it right now.

I'd say Sony. When it comes to video games, the casual market is where the money is at. Zynga, the developers of Farmville, had a revenue of over twice as much as EA and Activision combined within the last fiscal year. Nintendo cashed in on the casual market, and Microsoft is putting a massive effort into gaining ground on the casual market, while Sony hasn't really given in yet. Sure, they released the Move peripheral, but they aren't really focusing on it. They just add a Move control scheme to some of the games they make. Sony hasn't altered their path of paving the way for real, hardcore games, and in order to see significant contributions to gaming, you need companies like Sony not to give in to the casual crowd and to continue making real games.

Yes, Microsoft pushed console online gaming last gen, but this gen belongs to Sony, becuase PS3's online is the closes thing consoles got to PC gaming online.

Exactly MS has done quite the opposite. Charge again for online play now $10 more than last gen. Restrict developers from releasing free content even if they wanted to. Expensive over priced DLC nickel and dime. Restrict any king of interaction with PC even when developer want to. Hide features that are free on PC and other consoles including cell phones behind a pay scheme. But is not limit to that. Insert the console with the highest fail rate in video game history, knowing it was bad. Designing a scheme of a so call affordable version of the console, which only purpose to make the consumer pay less at the moment but then latter on charge them a ton of money for over priced peripherals. Total stagnation of the hardware prices do to having a good position on the market something sony never did even when they were the leaders, the xbox 360 has loss only $100 in 6 years, when the PS3 even with blu-ray launch for $600 and is now cheaper than the 360,and has loss $350 dollars of its original launch price.

Nope, like I said above Publishers deal with the servers.

i wouldnt exactly consider "showing the bad effects of over milkage" a canidate for best contribution to gaming this gen. its not like bobby Kotick was like "YEAH, IM GONNA SHOW EVERYBODY WHAT NOT TO DO!" Activision might qualify for company that has hurt the industry the most this gen, with its irresponsible managing of their franchises or milking as you already stated. Along with the destruction of some great dev studios and sucking a billion dollars out of the industry a year with one franchise (but you cant really hate on them for success, no matter how dirty it is).

idk, i dont see how activision is legitimate at all.

The BEST contribution (as in quality, not quantity) would be from Monolith Soft, which has created Xenoblade -- a game I find hard not to classify as the best of this generation.

But, to give credit where it's due:

1. Monolith Soft - Xenoblade

2. 2k Boston - Bioshock

3. Eidos Montreal - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

(4. Valve - Portal 2)

Indie Developers:

1. Johnathan Blow - Braid

2. Team Meat - Super Meat Boy

3. Markus "Notch" Persson - Minecraft

iHarlequin

i think braid and minecraft had a huge effect on the indie-sphere and the industry as a whole for sure. making indie games popular as well as being incredibly excellent and ground breaking games in their own right.

but as for monolith soft and eidos and irrational, they made excellent games, definitely. But i dont know if they had an impact on games as a whole. they werent exactly genre busting. None of those games are Half life or ocarina of time or Super mario bros

Valve.

I didn't realise this until now, but Steam is the biggest difference between last gen and now as far as my gaming experience is concerned hands-down.

I'd have to say Sony. The graphics are better than xbox and nintendo.

And the ps3 is more reliable and durable than the 360.

Some say the 360 is better for online gaming, but ps3 offers free online gaming.

Nintendo made motion controls, but (in my opinion) not every game needs motion controls. (i hate that zelda is motion controller)

Nintendo for several reasons:

1. From a business perspective they've made the most money this generation.

2. New ways to play games made popular by Nintendo (touch screen, dual screens, motion control).

3. Bringing more people into the gaming industry, causing it to grow and expand in new directions.

Proof of the above is that the other companies have scrambled to copy them and changed their own business strategies.

An argument could also be made for PC gaming for pushing tech and graphics forward.

No argument can be made for Sony or Microsoft consoles however because they just do what PC does, only poorer. Blu Ray has made a great contribution for home movies and tv, but not for gaming.

Nintendo, in one generation they have managed to change the gaming direction of both Microsoft and Sony, console gaming is all family friendly titles and motion control.

well...the TC did say best and the Motion Control/App-style games aren't what majority would consider "the best," if even good.

"I said Gears of War "2"

no does Gears of War 3? nope.lDeadlyReconI

I can't believe you would edit your post just so you don't have to admit you were wrong. :|

"Yes I do know there's a Xbox 360 game that does have cross platform play, but I can't think of the name of it right now."

Shadowrun, years before Sony had cross-platform play on PSN.

"PS3 games publish by Sony most of them have dedicated servers"

Okay, prove it.
